NAU’s coach Mike Smith is a MASTER MIND of a coach and a genius strategist. First, outstanding performance by Grijalva ! !having to change strategy from a Track & Field mentality to a 10k Cross Country race & then place Top 10 is short from incredible. After Grijalva’s ability to lead, pace, and set the rhythm for the pack through the first part of the race, the NAU team then grinds together until the smoke is fully cleared. This then opens it up for Nico Young, Abdlhamid Nur, Ferro to lead the pace for the pack right into a top 10, finish for all four runners including Grijalva. The remaining of the NAU team pulls impressive runs for the caliber of this race. Mike Smith = Master Mind. This shows that there’s levels to the sport of cross country. Great job NAU

I hate when I hear that Kiptoo must be tired from the indoor 5k that he ran. Conner Mantz hands down won this race. He straight kicked Kiptoo’s ass!!! These guys run so many miles and are in incredible shape. Sometimes when these guys double or triple in track, their better race is the second or third one. I did run at NCAA D1 level, but certainly not amongst the top like these guys. Even for me sometimes my second race of a double would be the better one. My conclusion is that Conner Mantz is the fastest collegiate runner at the 10k distance. He ran a fantastic race strategically, he was the most prepared, and it was his day. Congrats to Conner Mantz!!!

Found this on the BYU site: All-American Brandon Garnica ran aside Clinger up until the final kilometer before heat exhaustion caused him to be pulled from the race. “Brandon had a little heat exhaustion problem with about 500 meters to go and went down,” Eyestone said. “He was running in a good position at the time. At that point in the race, the chance to win the title had already slipped away with NAU in a stronger position than anyone could handle. However, I think we still had a podium shot at that point in time.”
