The Dreadmill Endurance Challenge (ultrasignup.co...) would be my last chance for a 100 mile finish in 2020.
The race is a virtual event. There are 2 categories: a 48 hour event where you try to run as many miles as possible in 48 hours, or the 100 mile event where you try to run 100 miles as quickly as possible. With either option you can choose the days in December that you want to complete the mileage. Once you start, you have 48 hours to finish.
I did this event last year, but I did not run it like a traditional ultra. Last year I chose to do this event to practice taking naps and sleeping during the run and see how my body would respond. I wanted to practice that to see if attempting a 200 mile race in the future would even be possible for consideration. It also allowed me to run a hundo with very little training last year (not that I advocate this).
This year was different. I was really craving the total immersion of body and mind that a 100 mile race requires. So I wanted to challenge myself. I’ve never finished 100 miles in under 24 hours and this seemed like the time to try. While thinking of finishing in under 24 hours, I also realized since most 100’s start at a reasonable hour in the morning most of us mortals will never finish 100 miles in the same day that we started. But with this event not only could I choose my start date, but I could also choose my start time.
So my personal challenge is set. Can I run 100 miles on the treadmill in under 24 hours and finish in the same day I started?
