OMG!!!! sun shade FINALLY CLOSES ALL THE WAY THANK YOU SOOOO MUCH,ever since day 1 I got my truck sun shade never closed

Thanks , really helped. Worked it first try. explorer 2016. Just had to turn engine on, open the door keep it opened, pressed and keep pressing the slide button. ( my problem was the shade wasn’t closing)

Yep, shade won't close past halfway if the glass isn't 100% shut. Be aware that the glass motors fail pretty often due to water intrusion from the sunroof drains being stopped up.

Will this work on a 2016 explorer sport ? I replaced the sunroof motor and i can't get it calibrated.

I do not, sorry. Those are pretty hard to replace. I would need someone else filming me in order to make one. It's really one of those things that you just need to see it done. Maybe next time my son is home from college, if we get one I'll try and have him film it. We'll see. As far as setting tension, that's unnecessary. If yours is hanging down, the tensioner is broken and the shade needs replacing. There's really no way it can lose tension unless something comes apart inside it.

I replaced my motor and now the glass moves back and forth, but it won’t fully close. It stays in the tilt position. And the buttons work in the opposite direction. Normally I push the button to open the sunroof, but if I push it the glass closes and if I pull the button it opens. I love my Explorer, but I am not looking forward to putting her in the dealership to get serviced.

Why did you replace the motor? And was it Ford or aftermarket

@@kaizoku9963 if it is under 36,000 miles it should be under warranty. I would take it into the dealer and let them fix it, it should be no charge

Thank you for this video, I just wasn't holding the button long enough because I was afraid of burning out the motor. I had to replace the sunshade and it wound up needing a new frame too. This was driving me crazy, I had everything reinstalled and the glass panels realigned but the sunshade wouldn't fully retract. You know how it is, you read the reinitialization procedure and try it and nothing happens. Then you think, "Did I do it right, did I start out in the right position, is something blocking it?" But no, I was just afraid to keep holding the button. Again, thank you.

That's one reason I made the first video I ever did. When you are reading the instructions it's different than if you see somebody actually doing it.

I had a friend replace the broken rail on my 2018 F150 Reset but now the only button that works is the pop up which only opens a little, then when you try to slide the sunroof open and all it does is CHATTER ! until you take your finger off the button. Now it won't even close ! No buttons work. Shade does not even close! Any help is appreciated!

i also have a 2018 f150 limited that is doing a similar thing, and that chatter sounds like gears stripping. now the only button that does anything is the open button and when i push this it opens to vent mode then closes. eventually it will stay open, but this button is supposed to open the sun roof. i fear there is something deeply wrong. As a mechanical engineer, IMHO this is the most pathetic attempt at a mechanism. looks like a high school senior design project, only worse.

Hi. Tried everything on my 2015 kuga and nothing works. After car battery replacement my sunroof and the shade open only till the middle. Tried all the steps and they dont work for me. Is there other sequence?

The Kuga is the same thing as an Escape, not the Explorer. Look up my other videos, I have one for the Escape as well. That might work

Well, unless that model is different from the USA Fords, it should work. The procedure IS dependent on the timing. Might want to keep trying it and see if you can get it right. I've done hundreds of them, and to this day I still have to try it several times to get some of them to start the reset. They are very finicky

@@shortsimple3998 if you have an actual key, you need only to turn it on and off and back on. If you have a button, it takes too long for it to turn on and off so I start the engine, cut it off, and then restart it. Simply because you can go on and off quicker that way. But with a regular key, there's no need.

2018 limited. sun shade wont close beyond the fixed sunroof. will open to all the way to back but halfway are from sunroof. I tried the reset, but nothing happened. this is what i did... in truck, ignition off ignition on door open ignition off ignition on press release sunshade close press n hold sunshade close. btw, my sunroof guide arms are cracked and will be replaced., just ordered the parts from sunroof doctor.

What's wrong with the Explorer is the motor of the sunroof glass. It died when it was not quite fully shut, and that's why the shade won't shut past halfway. Most likely the sunroof drains are clogged in the water spilled over and that's what killed the motor.

@@SealofPerfection mine is a pickup. the shade will open all the way, but only close half way. one thing i remember with the sun roof failure was a very load clickling like sound, sort of like gears stripping.

@@kinematic4380 Oh. In that case what I said about the shade still applies. It's not fully shut or the shade would shut the rest of the way. But the reason is now different. Likely your track is broken. Slightly possible the guide arms are the problem but here lately it's been the track more often than not

I tried this, but it only cycled through once and then wouldn’t open again. The sun shade won’t open either. Any ideas?

Shade won't move at all? That's unusual. Typically the sunroof motor goes bad from the water leak that most folks don't even know they have, but the shade will still at least close halfway and open. Try the procedure again. I've had to do it several times on a few vehicles to get it to "take"

They are two separate motors and no way of water leaks inside unless it's the connection between the sunroof and motor. They should work independently

I've not seen too many problems with these sunroofs so far. Just a couple here and there. The biggest issue I've seen was the seals falling off the glasses, particularly the rear glass. Seen more than a few of those, but still not a huge issue.

If you're really a quality engineer (most of the people on the Internet are FOS) then I need to share what I found in repairing/replacing this unit. The complaint was that the sunshade wouldn't retract, it was because of some sort of spring failure (I haven't disassembled the original unit). It also had a leaking drain line at the passenger side rear. There was a TSB for the drain tube and it was found to be kinked up by the rear HVAC duct. The replacement tube was a bit shorter and fit better so there was no kink after replacing it. After removing the sunroof frame I found that the plastic that was formed over the window retracting mechanism guides was starting to come loose and break off in chunks. At this point we went ahead and replaced the frame to prevent future issues. The biggest problem I want to address is the way the sunshade is made and rolled up at the factory. The way this sunshade feeds into the tracks folded over at the outer edges with the clip in brackets is okay but in the roll it's flat. This means that as the sunshade feeds into the tracks it has to fold over which creates resistance and a natural tendency to try and come out of the tracks. The original sunshade not only wouldn't retract but was pulled loose out of the track on one side. I didn't realize that this was how it was supposed to be until after I had sent back the first one thinking it was assembled wrong. I remedied this by unrolling the new sunshade, rolling over both edges and rolling it back up the way it should be originally. I left it in the sun for the afternoon and installed it the next morning and it works great. As far as what may have broken in the original sunshade unit I suspect it was something plastic that became brittle and broke. I'm in central Texas where it gets up around 110° on a regular basis during the summer and this Explorer is black with a black interior. Heat cooked plastic and UV radiation damage are common problems in this area. Hopefully this helps in repairing design flaws.

@jessezass believe it or not I actually am here in Auburn Hills, MI. The Rollo derail is one of pir biggest warranty issues and the pdf clip is what we call is was redesigned for this issue. They made the clip that goes into the track longer in hopes it would gold better. As for the way the Rollo is rolled up and the springs, that all comes from our supplier and are simply installed into the frame. Spring tension is another big issue. Man you got them all. Water leak not so much but it's an issue most sunroofs will have eventually just due to the wearing down of seals. Any chance you have photos of the mechanism breaking apart? The warranty engineer sits next to me so any information is helpful. Thanks!

I responded to your post but my response disappeared 🤔 I took pictures of the cracked and peeled plastic and found multiple spots where there were just cracks. It looks like where the mechanism pushes the glass up to its fully closed position. Let me know a way to send these pictures.
