I still have my 1996 F150 Reg Cab long bed 4x4 4.9 (~280k miles), but with the 5spd Mazda transmission (my first truck and still love it). Once I picked up to the 5-6k lb range with the trailers that transmission just couldn't keep up. I had to find a junk yard donor transmission after I broke something pulling over the short passes here in Washington State that left it permanently in 3rd gear. Past the new-ish tranny it is still all stock and now used as a hunting rig, perfect for the logging roads. It will pull anything I put behind it that I typically tow, but I wont do anything loaded anymore for the transmission sake.

Thanks! Very good review. I appreciate all your comments. I'm looking to upgrade from my 08 Dodge QC long bed with the Cummins diesel since I no longer drive 25,000 miles a year. Now that I'm retired, I'm looking for a newer truck, most likely a Ford F350 crew cab long bed 4x4. I live in New Mexico where tall hills are common and mountains are just as common. On fishing trips to Colorado, very tall mountains (over 12,000 ft on the highways) are extremely common. I've been looking at the 7.3 gas engine and have driven it. Very nice with enough power to handle the load I'll have in the back of my truck (truck camper) of over 3200#. I also plan to tow my utility trailer with my Jeep on-board. I need the power, but I don't need the diesel now since we seldom go on the long trips of 4,000 to 5000 miles we have in the past. Thanks for the pointer on getting the dual alternator & batteries; it should keep my house batteries fully charged.

Man-o-man are you thorough...thank you. I am buying an F-350 in the next 2 weeks or so. Thinking about upgrade to bigger 60 gal fuel tank. The 7.3 is what I'm getting. I've always had the short bed in my previous 5 trucks...the long bed would work if I wanted to load my GL1800 Honda Goldwing in the back...I'm very much looking forward to your reviews... Excellent video.....very informative. I have owned both gas and diesel trucks. Have had diesel Ford Super Duty trucks that have pulled a 4 Star gooseneck horse trailer 3 to 4 weekends every month from October to April for over 14 years traveling to 18 states. The diesel is superb for launching a heavy load.....and passing ability with a load out on the highways and interstates.....but noticeably higher initial expense, higher maintenance, and much greater potential with reliability issues and problems resulting from all the EPA regulations. That said, my towing needs are now reduced and I currently own a 2019 Ford F-350 Crew Cab Lariat Sport 6.2L 4WD SRW 160.....great truck. However, I am now looking at the new Tremor with 7.3L engine . Probably wait and purchase a late 2021 or early 2022 truck.

I bought a 2019 6.2 and have been very happy. I was thinking of waiting to get the 7.3, but I decided to go with the proven 6.2 platform with the 6 speed trans. I wanted give the 7.3 and 10 speed at least a year to see if there were any problems.

As someone who owns a 2020 7.3 tremor and has a family member with a 2019 6.2 there isn’t a whole lot of difference between the two power wise. The 7.3 has a little more pep in its step and the transmission does hold its RPMs better since its not hunting for gears, but unless you have something to pull, they’re both about equal if you only plan to daily drive it.

@@donaldduck119 if you really want to exploit how good the 6.2 L could be compared to the 7 3 Apples to Apples you could get yourself a 2020 F350 and option in the 10-speed transmission. That is an option with the 6.2 but only in the 2020 F350 they don't do it for the F250. If you really want to do some good pulling in that configuration opt-in for the 4:30 gears with that 6.2 and 10 speed and you'll see a whole new world available for that engine

@@campingalan Nice!! Hi we just got word our DMW gave the OK and we actually have a license plate! They were lost weather to treat it as a (big) / semi) like- thing or as a 'car' and decided the first one. Luckily I still have the drivers license for it from my military days. So hopefully we'll be able to pick it up this coming week. Finally! The hood had a small scratch / dent from transport 'cross the Atlantic in a container and the'll fix that first. Not good for a new truck. When will you be getting yours?? Does it take as long over there? What State are you in? 'Can't imagine it! Tnx for asking and keep us posted!

Ha....I think the only thing bigger that your rig, on the road over there, will be the tractor trailers hehehe. We had our Honda Civic when I was stationed in Stuttgart. Though we definitely looked like the Beverly Hillbillies when we would go camping and had stuff strapped to our roof, I was glad for the smaller sized vehicle as we traveled a lot for sight seeing. So, it takes a week or two for Ford to assign a VIN number. That will also be when they are able to more accurately project the completion day. Generically, it seems builds are taking about 8-10 weeks, currently. So, hopefully get it in April. I live up in the mountains of Colorado. We moved here 4 years ago from North Carolina. The main function for the truck will be to tow a travel trailer. We ordered one of those also; it should arrive in July. I am fine with that longer build time as our camping areas in the national forest are frequently blocked off till July due to snow (we live at 8000feet elevation).

I think you have a point on the 4.9. When you said that, I had to look it up and make sure (hard to remember it all...) but I was thinking that was an inline 6 rather than a V, and I was right. Inline cylinder engines, I think, have a better low end pull than V blocks. I wish large displacement I6s would make more of a comeback, especially turbocharged. Before someone says it, I know the Cummins always has been, and that's what I drive personally, and GM's new 1500 turbodiesel is also an I6, but I'd like to see more, and see them in gasoline options too.

The new trucks are amazing for towing. My 2016 f350 6.7 is a beast. However I have a 1997 f350 and a 1995 f350, both cclb and both 7.3 psd with 3.55 but the 95 is a 5 speed, the 97 is an automatic. I can say without a doubt that the e4od is what let that 460 down. It shifted out so soon its almost heartbreaking. I can run in 5th at 75 pulling a 38' 9500lbs camper with ease, the automatic stays in 3rd and struggles to do 60 without risking burning up the transmission. Point is in the days of the obs era Ford's, for towing 5 speed is a must.

Knew here . Really like the fact that you're on a gasser . So many . Really almost the channels are diesel. Only disadvantage i see is tow capacity and Fuel mileage. I would also be more inclined to buy a gasser f250 or 350 . Will fallow to see the put ome of your advature . Side note . I have a good friend of mine that has a 460 90's f250 4x4. Can't remember the year. The list of mods are suspension for towimg . Air bags and stuff. Electric fan's , converted to EFI . Slight head and intake work and cam , 80 TB , headers and full exhaust to the rear . All for towing in mind All that help alot but his biggest mod the he notice and made him keep the truck was the 6R80 transmission from a 17 F250 . His fuel mileage when up . By alot and tows like a champ with out breaking a sweat. He's now considering going 410's to 430's

I'm in the process of ordering a new 2021 Ford P/U and have a trailer about the same spec's as yours. I know you now have aF 350 7.3L. Is it worth the extra $$$ to get the 7.3L ?? I can't get 3.73 rear in an F250 only 3.55. If I go to a 1T I can get the 3.73. Should I go to the 1T & 3.73??? or save my $$$ and just go F250 with the 6.2?? Your input is appreciated...

Granted less wind drag, but up a few major Colorado passes. My engine also like to rev high. I’ll keep it for a few years more then have to decide if I want the 7.3 Godzilla or something else

We just towed through the Appalachian Mountains on our return trip from Myrtle Beach a couple weeks ago we were 17000 lb combined and the truck would just fly up the 5% grade that was 6 miles long that 10 speed does an exceptional job with that engine combination

I currently have a '13 F250, 6.7L with 7.5K air lift bags and a 50 gal Titan fuel tank, that pulls the New England hills it like a champ, but I'm about 4k over when fully loaded. Considering this truck in a DRW. On the fence gasser vs oil burner. I really appreciate your unfiltered reviews. Hopefully we'll be seeing a review on the mountain pulls.

The only thing about camera's is that it will make you lazy. LOL. My 2018 F150 has cameras and I have got so used to backing in with them. However, the most important part is that I put mine in a garage and have to pull within about 2 inches of the front wall to fit in the garage and that front camera is wonderful. Going on a year and a half and I haven't tapped the garage wall yet. LOL.

The 4.9 300 straight 6 is a hell of a motor the best motor ford ever manufactured them things will out pull 3/4 &1 ton gas engines the 300 straight 6 is a tractor motor not a lot of horsepower but an enormous amount of torque especially on the low end and I'm a gm man but that 300 straight 6 in unkillable

Yesss!!! I had one in a 85 bronco that only saw the woods and mud holes. I couldn't kill it or the c6 trans. I drained 2 gallons of water out of it after flooding it in a creek, and it still ran with the water in it. Drained it out, new filter and oil, went for a long time after. So cool them ol 6s

It's a challenge with the turning radius still. Ford hasn't changed that at all. Not unless you get into an F-450. Good thing our RV is not very long. Plus we have a propride hitch which allows a 87 degree angle before it will jack knife

From what I've seen great motor needs a cat back done and cold air and to be dyno for more power or tuned , should be better than 7.5 all around with the 10 speed option know they also come with the 6 speed like the 6.2 . seen in the future they also will have a super charger in the after market and the 10 speed can already handle 1000 ft pounds of torc that the 6.7 produces. Should be fun to see the power and durability of the 7.3 .

Thanks for the review. I've looked at several videos of F-250/350 SRWm 4x4 with the 7.3 engine and 10 speed. The biggest discrepancy between them is the claimed gas mileage when unladen, not towing a trailer, on level highway at 65 to 70 MPH. Some claim ~14 MPG, but others claim an exceptionally high MPG ranging up to 19.3 MPG. Do you have a sense of the unladen, non towing highway MPG for the 7.3?

Yeah I would have to thank that my gas mileage unloaded hovers right around 15 maybe 17 if I take it easy which I never do. LOL. Once you get above 63 miles an hour the air that you're pushing just kills you regardless of what engine and transmission you have. That's a tall wide truck

Not sure. Back in the day 429-460 and the Mopar 440 were the best gas Big Blocks to be used in commercial applications especially motorhomes. Man they were in so many motorhomes. Then when the Ford V10 took the place of the old Big Blocks, it pretty much was the only gas engine that occupied the motorhomes. Now this new commercial engine will definitely be the best of all of them if you want a gas Big Block in your class C or Class A. So really, the only true commercial big block that went away from the old push rod technology was the V10. All I know is I'm glad it's back.

The reason why the 2019 and the new Ford trucks are bigger is because they are made from military grade aluminum which is lighter than steel. So they can make them bigger and still have them lighter than the steel body..Also it allows for them to be able to haul more weight, by lowering the vehicle weight it increases the GVWR as well as towing weight, and total CGVWR..

Hey there, I'm in the Rockies, living in what we refer to as the 'midlands', with an elevation of just under 4700 feet. I'm NOT trying to yank your chain here, or play better than thou, but local passes are 6,000-6,500 feet, and that's just going to town for groceries (no foolin', I live 40 miles out of town, literally in the Oil Patch and Open Range). When I get work (which is VERY rare these days, take a guess why) in Sheridan, I go over a pass that is appx. 9,600 ft elevation. I used to own a 1994 Ford F250, 7.3L Powerstroke, 4x4 (anyone who lives here and buys 2 wheel drive is considered an abject idiot and with good reason), supercab, with a 1300lb Eagle electric liftgate, two inboard tanks, and a 100 gal in bed tank. Depending on my speeds, I'd get 15mpg running 80mph down to the Denver Vally area, or if I did the Double Nickel, I could get as much as 21mpg, though I avereaged 19mpg. Hauling a trailer with about 6,000lbs, and doing 70-75mph, I'd get 15-16mpg. Y'a'll living in the Flatlands really don't understand the concept of 'mountains', until you've driven the Rockies! I'm getting my house ready to sell (going to market to Austrian, German, Japanese Hunting Clubs for greater dollar value), and move to AK (too many people here). I've got a 5th wheel waiting for me that has a GVW of 8800 lbs, so I'll be looking for either an older 2001 Ford that I can refurbish with a new 7.3L (Ford still sells them), OR I'll go with the Ford 6.7L....anything in between is just trouble waiting to happen. Great video, great observations, and while all those gauges and gadgets look nice and do a good job of providing you with the 'fine print' of what' s going on under the hood, I'll be happy with a Matched Set of Headers on my 7.3L powerstrok, 3.73-3.77 rear end ratio, and a quality heavy duty tranny, with oil cooler. @@Rvdaydream You'll get 4-6 miles to the gallon with that setup, max speed 50mph. Most people run STOCK running gear, STOCK EXHAUST, because the CAN'T afford to void their warranties on $60,000-$80,000 trucks AND pay the HIGH parts and labor costs for aftermarket parts. People buy rigs with towing packages, add a hitch and head down the road. Diesel engines are superior for hauling loads, pulling or carrying, get superior fuel GPM doing it and last longer. Those are proven FACTS across DECADES of hard data, NOT my personally subjective opinion. You want to run gas at half or one third the GPM of diesel? Fine by me: your money, your choice. 4000 lb of payload and the ability to convert over from a travel trailer to a fifth wheel a little easier if we decide to do that in the future. Honestly, the price of the F350 wasn't near as bad as I thought it was going to be in very comprable to the F250 so I figured why not get the heavier truck. I mean, when it comes right down to it, I think one of the best combinations for someone who might not be Towing all the time is the F350 crew cab long bed so you could get the 48 gallon tank and the 6.2 L with the 4:30 gears and since it's an F-350 you have the option of the new 10-speed transmission. I think that could be a sleeper vehicle for best fuel mileage in a big platform with great towing capability. The other thing was I had added torklift stable loads on my leaf springs of my F250 because I didn't like the way that it squatted with my 1100 lb tongue weight from the travel trailer. I still think the 6.2 in the F250 extended cab might have been faster than this 7.3 but they're coming out with so much stuff for the 7.3 it's ridiculous. I just wanted a little bit I just wanted a little bit more then the F250 offered.

One follow up question, I presently have a 95 F-350 4x4 Crew Cab (7.3L Turbo Diesel with manual transmission) which I don't plan to get rid of even if I upgrade to a 2020 F-350 7.3 gasser. My 95 takes a football field to make a turn; seriously, the turning radius is a real consideration of any spot that I might try to get in when towing my 33' 5th wheel. My question: What has been your experience with the turning radius of your 2020 F-350?

Gearing is key, would have helped noticeably and hunting between 3rd and fourth will fry a transmission, especially without a big auxiliary transmission cooler.

Foxboss9 - I have a 2020 Tremor 7.3, and I did upgrade the exhaust. It’s just a resonator back kit with 4” mandrel bent piping but made quite a difference and just sounds Mean now!! I plan on doing a Tuner but like you I’ll wait until after the warrant has expired. 👍🏽

Well, unfortunately the 2019 Super Duty with the 6.2 was traded in. Kind of a Funny Story, I called a guy down in North Carolina and was going to have him do a Raptor supercharger for the 6.2 and after figuring out money and how much it was going to cost in addition to a complete exhaust system and of course a tune, we decided to get the 7.3. Right now we're more concerned with how the 7.3 is in stock form and at some point we may go forward with exhaust and a tune. I still think that for the money a new F350 with a 6.2 and 430 gears would be the cheapest best option to get a good Super Duty without breaking the bank. The reason I say choose the F350 with the 6.2 is because you can option in the 10 speed transmission for 2020 models.

Those 460’s are great but my god are they ever THIRSTY!! They’ll take $20 in gas just to warm up in the morning. The new 7.3 I’ve seen people getting 13-14 mpg unloaded. I’m sure with a camper you’ll be back down at 7-8 but that’s still better than the 5 mpg from the 460.

I have a 2006 6.0 Powerstroke cab and chassis. $9,000 later, it's been made reliable and is a damn good truck. Only problem is the mpg is horrible. About 11 mpg average/80% highway. Funny thing is it gets 11 mpg weather I'm towing 16k or running empty. Its a single cab drw with a 12 flat bed. I want a new truck because the ride is so rough. It really beats my spine. A 4 door would be nice for my kids. After seeing how complicated a diesel engine is and all I've learned at my own expense, how the engine, turbo, and emissions system is and how they all have to work in unison......no way will I get another diesel. I'd have to pay a mechanic just to change a belt. There is absolutely no room under the hood for anything. That 7.3 will pull anything I need to, all the way up to 20k and I never go over 16K. And I probably pull that weight once a month for about 60 miles. The rest of the time, I have an 800 lb welder, a job box, and a small crane on my bed. I'm going gas and I'm going 7.3 with 4.30 axle ratio.......when I can afford a new truck. Gonna have to stick with my 6.0 a little longer. At least it's a reliable truck.

No... as I said in previous videos if I'm over 10,000 to 11000 pounds I'm definitely going to a dually and most likely a diesel. Even if I was under 10,000 pounds if I was doing 10000 plus miles a year with a 9500 lb fifth wheel I would be probably looking at a diesel. Your comparing 2 different animals. The truck with the 460 is using a E4OD transmission. The new truck has 10 speed trans. The 7.3 gas engine uses variable valve timing. If you switched the transmissions. The truck with the 460 would be very different. The new trucks suspension is very different also. But technology shows. Now when anyone purchases a truck for towing with a big v8 the last thing anyone looks at is fuel mileage. All of my trucks have big blocks and they are purpose use trucks to tow or haul. I expect my trucks to do there job. I have tested 4 trucks. 1998 chevy dually with a 454 and a 2011 chevy dually with a 6.0 1997 F350 dually with a 7.3 powerstroke diesel 2018 Dodge 3500 with a cummins . Towing a trailer of 14,888 lbs from Pittsburgh to Jacksonville . we were surprised. 1998. 4.6 mpg 2011 7.1 mpg 1997 3.9 mpg 2018 8.8 mpg

302s from those years are notoriously under-powered, i've had 3 of them, an 86, an 88 and a 95 and they were all pretty gutless, friend of mine had a 94 that was pretty good but he also had some work done to it.

All of those high rpms towing is building a lot of heat in the motor/trans. Less rpm = engine working easier/more efficiently and less wear/tear. Upgrading your truck upgraded everything including the most important thing...your braking. I would also imagine your hitch on your older vehicle wasn't rated the same as the F250. You sound vehicle savvy and I'm probably not telling you anything you don't already know.

If you tow weekly the diesel is fine. If you use the truck as an everyday driver and tow occasionally, the 7.3 is far better. The diesels today, are a PITA to run, specifically because of the DPF system. The DPF clogs if you do relatively short trips and the truck doesn't warm up and then get at least 30 miles of driving over 45 mph. I've owned: 1988, 1995, 2000, 2007, 2010. and 2019 Ford diesel, crew cabs. My next truck will probably be the 7.3 because of the diesel emissions systems.

Have you had any trouble with plug wires? Seems to be a common issue. So much so that there are none in stock. All on back order.

Here's the problem with that. You have a well-known KZbin channel that says that they're having a major problem and everybody panics and buys bread and milk because they're going to starve. The reason it's on a backorder is because everybody's buying it just in case. They just had a bad batch of wires. Common would not be the word to describe what's going on. Panic buying would be. They're on National backorder not because everybody needs them it's because everybody is afraid that their vehicle is going to shut down or only run on 5 cylinders within a moment's notice. It's just a plug wire. Nothing special. I've got an extra MSD 8.8 mm coil wire just in case something happens with mine. But since the Panic is on and people are misinformed they think that the only thing that they can run their vehicle with is whatever Ford offers. Not the case. For emergency reasons you can use an aftermarket coil wire to get you where you need to be. If I sound sour it's because we have well known KZbinrs that unfortunately made the problem sounds like a second pandemic in the making. It's not common. There are a lot of those trucks on the road. It's just like everything else if you look and research a problem you'll find a group of people that are experiencing things that may be the exact same issue but the bigger picture is that there are tens of thousands of these trucks out there and one KZbin channel knows of three that had a problem. With as many views as they got on that channel how many of the people that watched were 7.3 owners and it would be different if the comment section was filled with thousands of people saying me too but instead there is a very small handful compared to what it could be. Heck there's more people that have problems with the diesel PVC oil separator then what is going on with some of the gas engines but everybody likes a good story. The truck is running like a champ. The only thing I can complain about is hitting the fuel cutoff in 3rd gear at 80 miles an hour is a real bummer. I'll wait until the warranties up before I start messing around with a tuner.

Foxboss9 I don’t own one, but I drive one to work 4 days a week. I work for a big mining company out west. The company buys ford fleet trucks. My truck was down for this issue for quite a while. It wasn’t the only truck down for this problem. I am not involved with purchasing, but I will pass along what you said about using the non-OEM coil wire. I really like driving it. Tons of power.

If you're talking about the black plastic cup holder on the 1997 F250, you can buy those at Advance Auto Parts normally for really cheap. They just clip on the door panel. I usually put some double-sided adhesive on it so it stays in place.
