From our previous video, you may know, we purchased a 2020 F 350 super duty with the new 7.3 gas engine to replace our 2019 F 250 with the 6.2. This video is to give you an idea of what the characteristics of the truck are while towing an 8000 pound travel trailer that is roughly 30 foot in length.

2015 F-250 2wd, extended cab, 6.2 GAS, 363,400 miles. Oil changed at 15K, full synthetic oil, no repairs other than scheduled maintenance. I haul exotic and antique cars and motorcycles all over the country in a 24’ enclosed trailer. An average month is 10,000 miles. Usually two bikes and a car on a trip. Also a travel-lite 6.5’ slide in truck camper approximately 2,000 lbs. 17K-18K gross is a normal load. I do this for a living, the math for a diesel just doesn’t work until you get over 20K gross. Initial cost for the engine upgrade, higher fuel price, def, extra weight, more moving parts, etc. My cost per mile is just shy of .19 cents per mile cheaper than a diesel in the same configuration.

I've got to get a new truck and have researched and reviewed for 2 whole years. Ibew union electrician, I have a 7000 pound 30 foot bumper pull trailer and will be traveling for the foreseeable 5 years. I refuse to get a diesel for such little weight, and with Per Diem truck calls going for $115 per day for crew cab 4x4 f250+, it makes sense to me to buy the newly designed 7.3l on an xl f250 platform. 6 speed 6.2 is proven technology, but worse mpg over time and not as easy to service, as well as transmission is geared for towing not for saving gas. 7.3l you can lock out specific gears which is the game changer, as well as the bigger tank. $49,569 @84 months here in Augusta @3.84 APR Looking at lass than 700$/mo. Worth it for me! Thanks for your review buddy, I've watched your previous videos while I've done my research. Thanks, and good luck!

Hi there! Thank you for showing your towing experiences with your new7.3! I just ordered an F350 7.3 with 4.30 gears yesterday. We ordered an Outdoors RV travel trailer as well. Loaded up, it will probably be about the same weight as yours. We live in CO and there is definitely a crew of people that would say we should have got a diesel. But, I've towed here with the 6.2l F250, and it did fine. The gas rig will probably be 30 seconds behind the diesel if both were towing weights up a mountain pass. Safe travels!!

Yeah the days of gasoline being a non performing engine when it comes to Towing is definitely in days of past. I would have to think that you are probably going to be heavier than us as our combined weight fully loaded with everything is 17000 pounds. I believe those outdoor RVs are pretty heavy because of the way they are built. Unless you have a 25 footer then at that point you might be close to ours.

@@Foxboss9 Good morning! Yes...times and technology have sure changed! We just got rid of our 1996 454 powered Suburban. It was actually a pig here in in CO in the mountains just towing 5 or 6k with my wife's vw bug and a trailer. This new one should have almost 50% more power. Yes...the ORVs are definitely heavy. Ours empty (a 26 and some change foot model) is 6400lbs. I assume I'll usually be under 8500lbs, until I fill up the fresh water. It holds 80gal's. The manufacturer's listed CCC is like 3300lbs, for a gvwr of about 10k. I guess I'll have space to bring my anvil, bench vise, maybe collect some rock boulders for the front yard, and such. Have a great day!

Good video. I think Ford has a winner on their hand with this 7.3 gas. Most people THINK they need a diesel, but in reality most of them do not. I would enjoy the feeling of not having to worry about the issues of a modern diesel and all the emission control systems. I too am looking at a 7.3 gas pickup, but will likely wait a bit before pulling the trigger. It would be interesting to see the towing characteristics of the F250/350 with that Tremor package since I think you get the 4:30's. Thanks for sharing.

blkfeet29 I’m going to becoming from a 6.7 dually, so I’m spoiled with the power. Actually this has been my forth diesel since 1998. I want the most gvwr for a trailer as I can get. Actually if you get the the dually with the 7.3 I believe it comes standard with the 4:30. With the 3:73 your rated at 15,900lbs for a fifth wheel and 4:30 19,000lbs for fifth wheel the way I spect out my new truck. Both gears are rated for 15,000lbs conventional tow. This time around I’m going to a SRW. Just tired of driving a dually for now and want a change. With the troubles that I’m having with the def system as also turned me off for now on the diesel. Maybe when the time comes down the road to get another truck they will have gotten the system figured out and I may go back. But for now no thanks. Over it.

blkfeet29 After sitting on the side of the road several times in idle waiting on a tow truck sucks. My truck has been at the dealer a month and a half now. I would get it back and only be able to drive it 3 days and it would go back in idle and back to the shop on a tow truck. At the moment they think it is fixed and they have been driving it a week now and it’s still running. Going to call first thing in the morning and if it’s still running and not going into fault we are picking it up and going straight to another dealer that I have a deal worked out with and trading it in. Have to order the new truck so it will be a long wait but I’m soooooo over this diesel at this point I could care less and just want to move on.

Towing with it is a breeze. I have gone through the smokey mountains a few times. Never have I felt like I could use more power. Sometimes an an exhaust brake could of been some help going down some steep hills but using the engine brake in low gear work fine. The fix held up great. No issues whatsoever after that. For your weight a diesel might work better but it all depends on how many miles you pull a year. The 7.3 would do a good job if you don't want to deal with the modern diesel emissions. You could change the engine twice for the same money you would have to chage just the fuel system on the diesel. That's not including the DEF system.

That part is it's just a plug wire. Sounds like there's lots of features, but at what cost? I pulled 40,000 lbs gross up the mountain leaving Albequerque at 75 mph with no downshift from overdrive my 99.5 F250 7.3 DIESEL and it still runs great with 320k mi. The engine breaking in the 2016 and up trucks are awesome. You'll be lucky to get maybe 200k mi. out of that engine, but, you'll save a little on oil changes. Diesels have been known to làst longer than gas engines. You'll learn to like that transmission breaking on your truck, especially with loads twice as heavy as that 8000 lb trailer -- which I think is really light for a 30 footer. Thanks for the update on the 2020 gasser. Keep posting as you get more and more miles.
@Foxboss9
@Foxboss9 3 жыл бұрын
Again, different characteristics for completely different engines. It would be like saying a 1.8 L Toyota engine doesn't have to Rev near as High compared to the 1.8 L Mazda rotary engine. Two different schools of thought. It doesn't make one better than the other. As far as 200,000 miles with the 7.3 gas, I have a feeling they're going to do better then most considering it's a forged crankshaft , much better cooling than any previous V8, cast iron block with extensive reinforcement webbing, a forged crankshaft, and 6 bolt mains. It's going to take a lot for that engine to come up short considering my old 460 had over 160000 and it performed perfectly. Even if I only get let's say 150000 out of this new gas engine, you can buy a new long block crate engine from throttle body to oil pan for roughly $7,400! Still shy of the $9,000 premium I would have had to pay to get into the diesel. Like I said plenty of times prior and even in this video, people have got to learn to buy a truck that matches their needs or slightly exceeds. Diesel used to be the way to go on even some of the lightest Towing and for everyday use but to buy a new one, and pay the kind of money that they're asking for oh, and the have to deal with the shortcomings of the EGR, the exhaust scrubbers, the def for the life of the factory warranty before you can yank it all off and make the truck perform the way it should or I should say the way they used to. There's a reason that the gas engine Market is booming and the manufacturers are pushing them. But, like I said, Towing over 10000 pounds more than 4000 miles a year. I would definitely look at a diesel. Even with all the emissions crap, and the higher fuel prices on average, and the higher oil change cost, and the higher initial purchase price. So don't be surprised that maybe one day on this channel will be talkin about a new diesel truck!

With the 10 speed, I wonder if with the 4.30 gears if your hauling gear would move up to 7th or 8th vs 6th based on the ratios. If you're towing under 6000 lb and you're only doing it a couple thousand miles a year. Then you may want to stick with the F-150 because you'll be driving something that gets a lot better gas mileage the other 90% of the time you're driving it. The F-250 would be absolute pleasure the toe with especially that little of weight however when you're not Towing you would be cursing it all the time because of the gas mileage and rougher ride.

I would never pull anything over 10k with a gas engine. 7.3 gas is an awesome truck, world's better than f150 when towing 8-10k pounds. Anything heavier, especially over 10k pounds, 6.7 powerstroke is the answer, especially when your in the mountains.

Getting a diesel truck would be an endless nightmare for people like me, who only use the truck to tow campers at most 10 times or 2000 miles a year. It’s gonna be hard to keep the diesel fuel and DEF clean and it’s only gonna be the matter of time the engine chock itself and needs big $$$ repair. I don’t see myself ever gonna own a diesel truck. The initial cost of the diesel is offset by it’s resale value. Pay more up front, the truck is worth more when you sell it. You could look at the difference of the xl & lariat & platinum trim levels....you’ll never recoup the cost of the extra trim level until you resell or trade it. After 20+ years of owning diesel trucks, I’ll likely go to gas for my next one. I’m definitely not liking the idea of going from ~19mpg to 12 or less, but there are just too many potential problems with the newer diesels.

drive by wire has nothing to do with the uphill shift. The load of the engine and the g- force sensor sensor in the truck, make the decisions when shifting. It knows your on a hill. so it saves the transmission from shifting itself to death, and keeps the engine in its peak torque range. I wish chevy and ram would learn from Ford. Fords tow programming is far beyond the others.
@Foxboss9
@Foxboss9 3 жыл бұрын
The downshift happens when you're going downhill obviously but you can also change the gearing with tapping the brake. When I meant to refer to is that the drive-by-wire holds the throttle open at the top of an acceleration run before it has a chance to shift to the next gear. So, what's a I run first and second gear out all the way and three quarters of the way through 3rd gear I decide to let off of the pedal the RPMs stay through the roof until the truck realizes that there is no input at the pedal and that it needs to shift to the next 2 or 4 gears higher in the range. That is definitely a drive-by-wire issue as the mechanical linkage that is normally Associated between the throttle and the transmission is no longer there to tell the transmission what the throttle is doing.

Do not go ten thousand miles on oil changes you will plug up that engine .Engineering are not paying for your truck and repairs. I would say no more then four thousand in between oil changes . That's why I don't buy used truck and vehicles because of poor maintenance Yes the oils are better than back twenty years ago but you still have contamination of the oil in your engine while your diving it . I have four Fords and two of them have over one hundred sixty thousand miles on them and when you look at the top of the head threw the oil fill they look brand new with all them miles. You got to figure that Ford is offering a hundred thousand mile powertrain warranty that's a lot of miles the only do 5 oil changes. Ford's responsible for that engine staying running. Talk about old school, sludge in the heads? That hasn't happened since the early 90s. All the new engines run a little hotter and have much better oil flow and of course the oils are made so much better. Not only that but the engines are at tighter tolerances so you have less Blow by contamination and the fuel delivery systems are so much more precise so you have less ring wash going on. Now, with that said I wouldn't go over 5,000 miles personally. And I run full synthetic lot semi blend.

I can tell you from driving Cummins 6.7's six days a week for years, you do not want a diesel unless your towing a fifteen thousand pound trailer or larger. The reason being is the D.E.F. system and D.P.F. system, for those of you that don't know the (D.P.F. is a filter inside of the exhaust system.. This filter consistently clogs up so the auto-makers way of un-clogging it is that when the exhaust reaches a very, VERY high temperature it dumps fuel into the exhaust via a 7th fuel injector that is located in the exhaust pipe upstream of the D.P.F.) The issue is you need to basically run these engines flat out, pedal to the floor on a daily basis, was the only way that I could keep the system clean.. and in total truck and load combined was about 34,000 lbs, so wide open throttle on a Cummins at 34,000 lbs, means your accelerating like a spanked 90's corolla.. Your just barely keeping up with traffic really. But thats my point, if you don't have a SUPER heavy trailer, you can't go wide open throttle on these trucks and the filters will clog and it will cost thousands, over and over and over and over til you give up and sell it. Go with the gas engine, trust me. All my ford friends say the same exact thing, cummins or powerstroke it doesn't matter.

I rather mute the exhaust sound if I could, so I can carry a conversation without raising my voice or turn up the music volume.

Agreed... besides the 2019 F250 Super Duty that had the 6.2 that we traded in, this truck is one of the quietest trucks I found in the last 20 years. I usually mess with the exhaust but I'm really enjoying the full system and how quiet It is while Towing.

If you don’t shut off your overdrive you burn up your transmission

Do not go 10k in between oil changes if you want your truck long term- the factory intervals are a joke

I wouldn’t go that far on oil change intervals. For a pickup, I keep mine at 5k miles.
