Nice video. A few comments: 1. Tech manual says to remove the "pre-drain plug" (after removing the safety pin) by rotating it by 90° to drain the oil filter before removing the oil filter cap. I guess that makes less of a mess. The size of socket for the cap is 24mm I believe. 2. You say the oil cap torque is "35 lb of Nm pressure" (which is ambiguous), to avoid any confusion for others, it is 25.3 lb-ft or 34.3 Nm torque. Also, Drain plug is 25.3-32.5 lb-ft or 34.3-44.1 Nm torque 3. You mention putting some oil on the O-ring for the "pre-drain plug" or "drain pin" (tech manual uses 3 different terms) but not putting oil on the O-ring for the filter cap. 4. Also, when re-installing the Drain plug for the oil pan, one should replace the gasket/washer for that too

If you pull the plastic keeper pin first the oil will drain out of the oil filter first before you remove it. Less oil mess.

Be aware the 2.5 2020-2021 Sonata uses a different filter kit. Part# for 2.5 : 26350 2S000. It requires a 27mm socket to get the cartridge loosened. The 1.6T requires 24mm socket. The 2.5 also requires an H8 hex to remove the drain plug.

I have a 2020 with the 2.5. It's weird that they didn't use the same filter setup as the 1.6. Just did my first change last night. Not a big fan of plastic housings, but that's what they come with.

I think you have missed something in your video. There is a drain plug on the filter that should be used to drain the filter before removing the housing. Remove the plastic locator pin to allow you to turn the drain plug and drain the oil from the filter housing.

Thanks for the information. I still was able to turn the filter housing with no issues.

Just curious, when you originally removed the canister off-camera, did the oil make a mess when it drained? If so, is it possible that the purpose for the pin-locked small piston on the filter is for draining the oil canister before removing it? If you remove the pin and push up or pull down on that piston, will that allow the oil drain? Otherwise, I can't imagine what that design is intended to achieve.
@rtwilliams19613 жыл бұрын
I have no idea why the design. It didn't make a mess when I drained it from the cartridge. I unscrewed it and some did overflow the top a little. All filters do that that hang upside anyway.
@brianhechinger67263 жыл бұрын
Yes remove the pin and turn that piston plug 90 degrees with pliers and pull it out. That drains the canister. Then a new piston plug gets installed in place with the new filter as shown in the vid.

Yes, I just did my first oil change yesterday, and removing that pin to drain the oil canister is probably the intended procedure.

If it's available use what the manufacturer says . OW-20 full synthetic will work in any temperature. Today's full synthetics are formulated to work in extreme heat and cold. Castrol, Mobil 1, Valvoline, Quaker State, etc. Great oils but make sure it's full synthetic. I've been using Mobil 1 0W-20 in my daughter's Honda Odyssey van for 7 years. It's always on the full mark after a 7500 mile oil change. I use Castrol full synthetic in our Sonata.
