My daughter purchased a brand new 2013 Kia Soul and she loved everything about it, until she had to sell it because she moved to NYC where she no longer needed a vehicle. The great thing was as a base model it only cost her $14K . She was elated. She is in the market for another vehicle now, and I am sure she will get another Soul. @@Sig721Tau Not a fair comparison. An Olds Cutlass with that much power would be a RWD model, which would not be affected by Torque Steer. Lighter weight, FWD vehicles with more powerful engines and cheaper steering setups, Such as the Soul, are very susceptible to Torque Steer, and that can indeed be scary if you don't know what you're doing. SavageGeese does know what he's doing however so it probably didn't scare him or cause him to lose control, but as a journalist it's his job to criticize things like Torque Steer which could be easily remedied with a little bit more investment money, or a little less power. What a tremendous explanation of this car, and the difference between comparing this '20 Soul to previous generations vs comparing it to something in the same category, but much more refined, such as the Mazda CX-30. It's also refreshing to hear a reviewer dare to describe any facet of a popular vehicle as "...a total disaster," or that an otherwise decent powertrain (turbo/DCT) seemed simply "slapped-in" to this car, without the proper development of the car, as a whole, to maximize the benefit of this costly, highest trim level.

Note: I’m around the 9:30 or 9:40 mark here where he’s talking about driving dynamics and the FWD characteristics of the Soul, and I was just thinking; I’ve only ever owned one FWD vehicle, which was a 2012 Chevrolet Malibu LTZ V6 with the 3.6L V6 and 6-speed automatic. It had an extremely rudimentary stability/traction program that could be totally disabled by the push of a button. Despite dumping gobs of torque onto the front wheels, it handled its power fairly well; taking off from a dead stop was very composed, and accelerating from a corner, or merging from a corner was very easy. Turning traction off would result in tons of spin. I mean, if you brake boosted and launched the car, it could sit and spin for a solid moment before it found grip on the factory Goodyear Eagle LS2 tires, and then launch you into a smoky, squealing start. Yet it was all very predictable and controllable. Even with traction off and your foot planted on the floor, it never plowed or pulled all that much, it would generally respond to your inputs and your inputs were received directly. That’s not to say that car could handle, because it didn’t. Nor could it stop very well. But the way the engine and transmission put down power, and the way the vehicle dynamics were designed to handle it, it did it well. In my short jaunts in other FWD cars, they never seem to handle their power very well, so it was very surprising to me that the recession-era Malibu I owned did. It was such an imperfect car in all the right ways that I actually miss it quite a bit, but it was an interesting car to toss into situations it was never designed for (don’t even get me started on driving New England winters in it).

This is for a younger demographic and they tend to like bass heavy music, so it actually makes sense for them to put such a system in this car. It's a selling point. I think that your audio standards are far more advanced than the average young consumer. I feel like you should provide this disclaimer to be fair.

About the sound system...I don’t have a Kia Soul but I just bought a 2019 Kia Niro. If the Soul is anything like the Niro the door panels are super easy to remove and replace the speakers. Factory speakers, even in premium sound versions, are crappy paper speakers with tiny magnets. I recommend getting Infiniti speakers. They are very sensitive speakers great for a straight up factory replacement. I bought Pioneers for rear doors and regret it. They sound OK but the quality of the pioneers is just a notch above the factory paper speakers. I also had a Kicker Key amp installed that really made a huge difference. It’s a tiny $200 amp you can get at Best Buy that also has an automatic EQ that really improves over factory setup cause it drives more power and EQs for better sound. I also put some sound deadener in the doors while I was at it. Although the Niro didn’t really need it since it’s already pretty quiet as far as the doors go.

The audio systems are not set up the same way. Almost all of this has to do with the software calibration. And the way they did the subwoofer and bass.
@JonMoralesLA4 жыл бұрын
savagegeese I assure you the problem with the Soul speakers is not unique. It’s the same problem with most stock speakers. They are made out of paper and have tiny magnets and are just garbage cheap. So my post suggest that if the door panels on the Soul are similar to the Niro, then they are physically easy to remove and thus the crap OEM speakers are easy to replace. That muddy/overpowering and unbalanced bass referenced in the video is the same exact problem I experienced with the Niro stock setup. It just sounded like muddy hot garbage. Most people are clueless and would love it but I certainly know how crap it sounded.

Dude, wireless charging is awful regardless of where it is, this is not a function or a fault of the vehicle. Use a wired charger! Besides that and your obsession about the "piano black" plastic, your reviews are by far the best, I'm not even a car guy and I've watched several dozen of them already, keep up the great work! Production values are obviously fantastic and your Abbott and Costello routine with your new partner is actually pretty funny!

Kia understands their buyers perfectly. A bad driving car, but at least it has speakers with colored lights. Everyone has their priorities. Keep this in mind when you see someone driving a Kia.

My Chrysler 200 has 295 horsepower with FWD and no torque steer. Didn’t matter if it’s a straight line or floored in a turn. It can definitely be done by a mainstream manufacturer in a mainstream car.

I would have bought one had they just used a conventional automatic. I'm not buying a CVT from a Korean car company, maybe a Toyota with a CVT, maybe. The room inside is insane, I sat in a 2020 at my local Kia dealership, when I read the Monroney label and saw "IVT" was like.... Hmm. And I don't need a turbo, if I wanted a turbo I'd go German. They know how to make a turbo. For me this car's drivetrain is a disaster. All they had to do was keep ONE ENGINE CHOICE, an MPI engine. And two choices of trannys, a manual and the 6 speed auto they had in the previous generation. They are going to lose sales of the Soul in the coming years is my prediction. Maybe I'm wrong. But who the hell wants to go fast with a turbo inside something as aerodynamic as this?? Who the hell is going to spend $27k on a Kia Soul?? Doesn't make sense.
@roboticvenom19354 жыл бұрын
Yet the interior is a bit of a disaster and it lacks any refinement. Stuffed with features designed to sell, this is the Kia we don't want to see, their old roots. What's this based off of? Aggressive looks? Seriously? You know better

I've driven the previous gen Soul and loved it. I like something a little more rowdy, especially if it's an otherwise boring family mover. You described it as a swapped 90s car that wasn't designed for the power. That's appealing to me! It feels like it may not be as sleep inducing as MOST of the other choices in the segment. So here's my question; I've driven the previous gen Soul and loved it. I currently have a Fiesta ST and love it. I had a Focus ST, didn't really like the car overall, but the power was nice. Looking for something more family oriented, would this GT line appeal to *me* instead of the "usual" buyer looking for something to sleep their way to work in? And I'd also love to know your thoughts on waiting for the EV version.
