That 6 speed torque converter aisin/toyota auto is the best thing about this thing, it just responds and delivers power. Hyundai/kia don't tell you that the dual clutch transmissions do NOT live up to off road adventures, at all- they get away with it because 98% of owners don't leave the road any ways. As far as suspension, I find it to be perfect. The stiffness is what allows this car to go to 80k miles before it feels like the suspension is getting weak and due for some damper replacements. The stiffer suspension surprised me when loading up a 230lb motorcycle with a steel bike carrier in the rear hitch, the cx-3 handled it like it wasn't even there, even on railroad crossings, the suspension just took it and it handed the winding high speed canyon with that load with no issues at all, totally impressive.

This was a fun video to watch. I have a 2020 Signature CX-5 and it will probably never go off pavement. No vehicle is perfect but in my 54 years of buying new vehicles, 17 to be exact, this is my all time favorite . I only use 87 octane after trying a couple tanks of premium. I felt no difference. 310 pounds feet versus 320 is not something I could feel but this amazing amount of torque in a small vehicle is what makes this car an absolute joy to drive. The Edwards video tests show the turbo CX-5 is 2 seconds faster to 60 than a new Rav 4 and 1 second faster than a new CRV. Both Toyota and Honda make fantastic vehicles and I have owned both. I had a 2015 Mazda 3 GT for 5 years. It was flawless and fun to drive and held its value very well. My new CX-5 is even more fun, just hope it will be as reliable. Thanks for a great video.

I'm in a serious bind between the rav or a cx5.. it's such a tough toss up. Obviously the Mazda has more luxury on even it's base model but the Toyota I feel slightly more confident about as far as longevity. As far as finances.. Toyota are pretty stiff and have a higher interest%. Mazda seems more likely to give incentives and rebates plus a lower %. Tough call. I seriously cannot decide.
@healthballnut3 жыл бұрын
@@T-roccBABY Toyota makes fine vehicles that last but so does Mazda. My son has had his 201O Mazda 3 for 11 years, he plans on keeping it for years to come. It has been flawless, I have done all the oil changes since new and he just spent his first money on maintenance, the car has a 160000 km or 100000 miles, he got his first tuneup, brake job and coolant change. I had my 2015 Mazda 3 for 6 years, it was Flawless. My CX5 is 8 months old, only 8000 miles but has been perfect and just a blast to drive and I love blowing the doors off new Rav4s, ha ha . As far as financing , in Canada Mazda uses Scotiabank and I made my best deal and then got 0 % interest. I have sold cars and know that in most cases 0 % is not really a no cost item but even back in 2010 and 2015 , both my son and I got 0 % interest after negotiating our best deal which is getting up and walking out, if a dealer lets you walk, you have made your best deal, trust me , I was a car salesman and that is the only way you know you got your best price. Remember the sales guy gets 30 % of the dealer’s profit, the conversations with the sales manager are not about giving the customer the lowest price.
@T-roccBABY3 жыл бұрын
@@healthballnut thanks for the response! Indeed I love being able to walk away. I'm considering waiting until December for even better pricing; whether they'll have a legitimate sale going on or just my own knowledge that they'll want to move 2021 stock, I'd imagine I could get the GT trim for the same price I'm looking at for the GS right now. The one thing I'm not crazy about is how barebones they've kept it. So, the rav already has a built in block heater and I love the little port on the bumper for plugging it in, way cleaner than having a cord hanging through your hood. The xle trim I'm looking at that's neck n neck with the gs trim does have fully power seats, which had a great lumbar support, whereas the cx was manual. I'm going to test it again in a few hours now to see how the manual lumbar holds up, but like I'm saying, if I wait until December that may not even be an issue. The GT trim also has stuff like fog lights and adaptive front lighting which I always thought was neat. I'd like to be able to talk them down on a gt trim but I think given the timing of the year it's not likely they'd match it to the gs trim haha. I'd also like to see them throw in a winter package or at least spare tires on rims.. I heard the stock tires on these are quite useless in snow. But I am definitely overall leaning more towards the Mazda. I like that they have ditched the Ford motors and have their own transmission now. More confident in craftsmanship in my opinion. I probably wouldn't spring for it but do you know if the turbo version of the cx5 would hold up? I've heard factory stock turbos are better for longevity than an aftermarket but I do still think that I'd have better engine life without a turbo all together.

@@sm3ool9383 My CX-5 is basically the exact same model as the one shown here. Took it for a drive out to a nearby lake - the winding highway part of the drive was fantastic and it had no problems handling the last stretch down a dirt gravel road with quite a few potholes. It wasn't off-roading to the extent you see here but outside of a firm ride (which basically you compromise on for looks with those 19inch wheels), I had zero issues. They should have more premium packages/options. It is easy to raise the price but it doesn't necessarily make sense to offer features some people do not care about. Glad to see they improved 4WD system. If you engage Trail Mode on street will it keep more power going to the rear?
@AndresSalazarAutos4 жыл бұрын
Short answer: NO. Long answer: Trail mode uses the fact that it has open differentials, you may know that in an open differential power goes to whichever wheel offers the least resistance to spinning, so having for example a wheel in the air will cause it to spin and spin, this system basically uses the ABS to brake individual wheels which then transfers the motion to the opposite wheel (the one with traction).

Yeah, totally dismissive in the 2019 review because he didn't realize that car also had the off-road mode, he just didn't know how to activate it. Does he even do research on the cars he tests before he makes the videos?

Is turning the TCS off on a 2019 CX-5 turbo the same as Trail mode on the 2020 CX-5 turbo or are there additional improvements made in the newer models?
@suburbiaowl46553 жыл бұрын
Ive been told it is.
@tonymante87593 жыл бұрын
yes it does the same function turns of traction control they just changed the icon and name of it from TCS to trail mode. No difference in functionality and the active awd system is so good at calculating terrain height yaw etc you basicly never have to even use it. its used moreso to thrust your way out of a tricky spot that your stuck in and want to just torque yourself out of the jam.

Question: can you enable trail mode in high speed? Like 20 MPH in snow or 60 MPH on highway? If so that will be awesome
@RandyAugustus4 жыл бұрын
Based on how this system works. What would enabling it higher speeds do? I’ll say this. After ~ 90 mph. Lots of features get turned off. So maybe go to your local race track and find out.

Outback vs Cx5 as a daily driver and some weekend light to moderate off-roading? Which one would you get?

Both can do it. Mazda is firmer, and will be more fun on pavement. Subaru better on the trails. Consider which aspect is more compelling for you.

@@drivingsports which is more robust and solid and reliable for many miles ? Which have stringer suspension?
@howardburleigh35682 жыл бұрын
@@amrashraf9559 Mazda is by far the most reliable of the two brands. One of my family members works for a Mazda Subaru dealership. They have tons of quality issues with Subarus, not so with Mazdas. I’m just now trading in my 2012 Mazda 3 with the first year of the skyactiv engine. 227,000 miles and it has never broken down on me.

I bought a new 2021 Mazda CX-5. I believe the CX-50 has the same engine. It has burned engine oil from day one and getting progressively worse. I looked up and found a bulletin for my car to be repaired. I took it in and they agreed that my car fell under that bulletin according to the VIN but, that I had to wait for the engine light to come on. By my calculation that won't happen until one oil change after my warranty is up. I only have 15,000 miles on it. Worse yet is that the KZbin posts from Mazda or it's dealerships take out negative reviews. Sleezy. Don't take a chance and buy Mazda’s. They don't stand by their products.

Can you test the RAV4 LE/XLE AWD with the bog-standard AWD? Everyone just tests the Adventure model. I want to know how the standard AWD with the new algorithms does.
@tomtalker2000 Жыл бұрын
I am utterly SHOCKED at how well this handled this terrain. All with the push of a button. Why in hell couldn't Honda incorporate the same technology into the CRV. It's a far roomier and more SUV looking vehicle than the CX-5 which is basically a crossover.

How does the ground clearance comparing the cx 30 and cx5. I find conflicting information online the cx5 is 7.5 in as stated in the video. Is the cx 30 is 6.9 in? Also it was mentioned the Rav 4 is better off road, does the engine in the Toyota feel underpowered off road?
@stevey5003 жыл бұрын
I feel doubtful that mazda is reading here, but the NEED to to push the "trail mode" button in order for the ABS system to apply the brakes to the spinning wheels seems incredibly unnecessary. This is far more mild than the 7 different drive modes most off road vehicles have these day but the button pushing shouldn't be one-bit necessary.

I wonder how this new xmode on the cx5 compares to the 2021 Kia Sorento AWD. Hopefully you get a chance to test the Kia would love to know how the AWD system stacks up against the Acura RDX and the Outback XT
@drivingsports3 жыл бұрын
The dual-clutch-equipped Sorento would be a poor choice for any off-road conditions. Almost all the dual-clutch systems we tested overhead at some point. The standard clutch with a smaller engine might be a better choice, but we haven't tested either yet. So, YMMV.
@matlorenzi4 жыл бұрын
The RAV4 is just a smaller, weaker and less capable version of the 4runner, which isn't necessarily a bad thing. It caters to small families that want something with a more aggressive look and feel than the boring CRV. But at the end of the day, it's numb steering and suspension will leave you glad that you have a prettier infotainment system because that's all about all the excitement you'll get from it. The CX-5 clearly isn't as practical as the competition as it's strong points are driving dynamics and style. It falls short on cargo space and smooth cruising as it's designed to give the real auto enthusiasts a step up in the driving experience. In order to do that, sacrifices have to be made. You can't glide over every bump in the road then zip through the corners without body roll, at least not at this price point. There's no winners or losers here, just different strokes for different folks.

How does it compare to your Onyx XT? It is similar in cost and power to the Subaru.

The Subaru has a lot more space for the money. The Outback is a slightly larger vehicle. I also prefer the dual X-mode for off-road use. The Mazda is better... but still not as good as the Subaru.

Great review. This car was just missing an effective AWD system. Bingo. Great review! Thanks Ryan. Does the CX9 get this AWD system? (Trail button). Not all suvs have a passthrough (skis plus two rear seat passengers). This one does.

Lack of cargo space too.
@Birdmacher4 жыл бұрын
Actually, this "effective" AWD system is also in the older models, you just turn it on using a different button. Sadly, he didn't seem to realize that when he tested the 2019 CX-5. Mazda has released an article detailing how to activate off-road mode in older CX-5s.

trying to decide between a 2018 CX-5 Grand Touring or a 2018 Subaru Crosstrek. I like the crosstrek more but wifey is boujie and prefers the Mazda. I want to use the SUV for car camping and going up north to the cabin and whatnot. What do you think?
@drivingsports3 жыл бұрын
The Mazda CX-5 is larger, making it better for car camping just due to having more space. Both are great cars with the Mazda being more street-oriented, of course. Make sure you keep your wife happy.
@piscespumpkin2 жыл бұрын
I own a cx5 and my fiance has a crosstrek and I can tell you now how uncomfortable it is to be in his crosstrek on long drives. The cx5 has you sitting up higher to where your legs actually bend at the knee like sitting in a regular chair. With the crosstrek I feel like I'm sitting on the floor with my legs straight out. There is also the giant transmission that takes up a lot of leg room in the interior making it hard to move your legs around.
