2020 Mazda CX 9 Review // A better buy over CX-5?

The Mazda CX-9 might be a better buy than choosing a top level version of the CX-5. The CX-5 Turbo uses the same engine as the CX-9 and is only a few thousand dollars more to get a much larger SUV with seating for 7-passengers. Both the CX-5 Turbo and CX-9 have a 2.5L Turbocharged 4-cylinder with 250 and 310lb.-ft. of torque. The CX-9 has more space side to side but it isn't the biggest in this class of vehicle. What the CX-9 crossover does have is a level of refinement and interior design that sets it apart.

Loved your point on cross shopping between mazda CX5 and CX9. I am one of the guys who choose CX-9 GS-L over CX5 GT for the size of the vehicle. I do miss a few features from GT, most notably the rear and front parking sensors and heads up display, but the fact that my second row and boot space are so much more practical now, makes up for the loss.

I own this suv. I chose it over the others because I value ride quality over everything else. We also own a Porsche Macan and the all around package and drive experience is not far off despite the Porsche costing 40,000 more. I’m super happy with my Mazda CX-9.

Lift Gate; Height is adjustable, so it may have additional range to clear your head. Sun Roof; Mazda focus is on Handling. That said, a pano roof adds a lot of weight in the wrong place. Pano Roof = Top Heavy. Thank you Mazda for NOT using a pano roof in the CX-9. As for the CX-5 being better suited for just two vs CX-9 just for two.. I personally prefer the CX-9 for just my wife and myself. Third row stays folded down all the time with a cargo mat made to fit perfectly in that configuration, now decent cargo room.

Love the back-and-forth between you guys! Entertaining! Though it will be quite a few years before I start looking for a new car, the Mazda CX5 has been on my radar for quite a while. It’s a little smaller than my SUV so I figured it would fit perfect in my single-car garage. Then I went on vacation with my brother, his wife and their grand nephew. They were driving their RV up to Gatlinburg and I rented a car to follow so that when we were staying at the campground we had a vehicle to go sightseeing. I lucked out and got to rent a Mazda CX9 grand touring all-wheel-drive. So it was loaded with features. I had it for a whole week, and we used it for sightseeing, only put regular gasoline in it. So with three adults and one child and one Jack Russell Terrier, we did perfectly fine with power and we had plenty of room for what we needed it for for the week. My brother and his wife are very impressed with this vehicle. And keep in mind my sister-in-law drives a 2017 RX 350 F-sport and I’ve had my 2010 RX 350 for 10 years! I really, really like the Mazda CX-9, although it would be hard to fit it into my small garage!🤷‍♀️

This SUV looks so good! I like this dashboard better than the Telluride’s, but, overall, it comes second. In spite of its shortcomings, it is certainly my pick over the rest of the bunch, including the redesigned Highlander. I am curious to see how Mazda redesigns this vehicle.

Xtra space? It’s barely larger than the cx5. It gives the appearance of a much larger Cuv but it’s not really. With the tiny 3rd row down it’s just a stretched cx5 that drives better and is more practical

@@Mrtellitlikeitis CX-5 is 179 inches long and the CX-9 is 200 that's a pretty big difference in size. Also, the CX-5 actually drives a little better because it's smaller and lighter. So yeah GG.

Love your videos! I just purchased a pre-owned 2019 CX9 tourning plus and I love it! Safety ratings were my number one priority so I narrowed my search to the Mazda and the Highlander. Upon test driving both, it was no comparison. The Highlander felt like driving a truck, and I found the super large infotainment screen annoying. Another plus for Mazda is reliability ratings.

Good question. Me and my wife don’t have any kids but we opted for a CX 9 over a CX 5. Why? Because it won’t run out of space when we have an addition to the family (most likely in the next 2-3 years). You get a lot more space in the cargo with last row folded. And the biggest difference is the value. CX 5 is a top selling Small SUV from Mazda which makes it hard to find a deal on it whereas CX 9 doesn’t sell as much, so super deals are pouring all day long. 🥳

Yes there are more practical options with bigger sunroofs, but with its looks, driving dynamics and Mazda reliability, it’s a real contender. I test drove the Telluride, Pallisades And Highlander. I wanted to like them more but couldn’t. I got the CX9 Kuro in the end.

This is a really nice vehicle! But like all Mazdas, you have to be willing to live with its' compromised nature. Mazdas drive great and have beautiful designs; inside and out! But, you have to endure the lack of space, old school transmission, and archaic infotainment. This is just no match for the Korean twins or the Highlander, imo.

I'm single, no kids, and looking at the CX-5. I like the utility of a hatchback (my first car I purchased myself was a 99 Mercury Cougar, and that hatch spoiled me) but I don't like the look of the Mazda3 hatch anymore. I'm also looking for a little more ground clearance in the snow. I'm looking at the CX-5 and not the CX-30 because in the US the 30 doesn't offer heated steering wheel (neither does the Mazda3 anymore - I have it in my 2018 Mazda3 and love it). I'm also looking for a little more trunk space, since I don't have a garage and always carry crap in the trunk that I might not otherwise (winter car kit, ton of reusable shopping bags). And I'm looking forward to the slightly higher trunk as I'm now a bit older.

Three rows is great, but I believe a bigger factor is size. Not of the vehicle itself, but rather the drivers. Many people (especially Americans) are larger than your/my Family (weight/size-wise). I just picked up a last gen Ford Ranger (borrowed for a few weeks), as I’m back/forth from cottages for the the rest of Summer. Compared to a regular F-150; How do people over 200 lbs. or over 6’2” fit into these little trucks .. comfortablely? Its a great 2nd vehicle, but if I had to have one vehicle- one truck... I’d go full size. Same thing with these Mazda’s. Priced relatively the same (little difference between $5 thousand), I would certainly buy the CX-9 over the prettier but ‘tiny-er’ CX-5. I’m not a big man, but I like space! (Note: first car was a ‘well used’ 1978 Chrysler Newport (1/2 vinyl roof)). Sometimes bigger is just better - especially for around the same price. Thanks for another great review.

I am single and am shopping around for a decent size used, but newer, SUV (I like the height while driving and the ease of getting in/out the vehicle). I recently fell in love and am, now, obsessed with getting a CX!! Originally, I wanted a CX-5 GT Reserve (I like the extra features such as Bose speakers, turbo/horsepower, and very important in S. Cali heat, ventilated seats), but those are hard to come by (thanks to the pandemic). I didn't want to settle for the base Sport model (though would if I had no other choice) and recently started taking a serious look at the CX-9, which seems like a perfect size (even though I'm a party of 1 lol). I recently realized the CX-9 GT has the same features (and then some) that I wanted in the CX-5 for only around $5,000 more. It seems very worth it for me to get the CX-9; I'll have almost everything I want (except the exterior/interior color combo. Although, after your very smart comment about the color transfer on the seats, I may not mind having the lighter color seats like I originally wanted). Hopefully, I'll have better luck finding a 2020 CX-9 GT, since I'm having trouble finding a CX5 GT Reserve available for sale. Thanks for a good video. I look forward to watching more.

Not entirely true. Even with 1 kid, your need for space goes up. There is a stroller which goes with you pretty much everywhere and eats into your cargo space. The rear facing car seat pushes the passenger seat forward in a smaller suv but not in a bigger one. Some spouses start traveling in the second row with the (crying) baby hence the desire for a roomier second row goes up. Not to mention the width of the car seat makes smaller cars useless for 5 people travel with the car seat installed. I went from a Ford Escape,which by no means is a tiny car, to a Mazda CX-9 just for sheer space, not for the number of people in it on a daily basis.
@stephenhendricks103

In the midsize three row category, the CX-9 "is not the biggest"? (0:28) Depends on how you measure its size. In fact, at 199" in length it's larger than every single competitor other than the Dodge Durango and bus-like Chevy Traverse. Bigger than the KIA Telluride, the Hyundai Palisade, the VW Atlas, the Honda Pilot, etc. Where it's definitely "not the biggest" is in interior space. In fact, it's at the bottom of the category. With 135.1 cubic ft of passenger space in all three rows, it has less space than the KIA Sorento (154.2 cf), a CUV that's almost a foot (10") shorter than the CX-9. It's 3rd row has 29.7" of legroom compared to the Sorento's 31.7'". The makes the CX-9 along with the Toyota Highlander the ONLY 3 row midsize CUVs with less legroom in the third row than the back seat of a Mustang. Cargo space is no better. To be fair, the 14.4 cubic ft of CX-9 behind the third row is more than the Sorento's 11.3 cf. Not surprising in view of the fact that the Sorento is the smallest 3 row crossover. But that 14.4 cf is less than every other mainstream midsize SUV. And the total cargo space behind the first row is 71.2 cf compared to 73 cubic ft of the Sorento. Compared to the total cargo space of the compact CX-5 (59.6 cf), the CX-9 is generous but it's puny compared to every other midsize SUV. All of these factors, along with its long-in-the tooth 4 cylinder engine and 6 speed transmission help explain why the CX-9 is the lowest selling mainstream 3 row SUV in North America. Fourteenth out of fourteen in the category. And not by a little. US sales of the CX-9 in 2019 amounted to 27,000 units. It's not especially surprising that the Highlander and Grand Cherokee outsold the CX-9 by a factor of over 9 to 1. But the Telluride sold over 64,000 units despite demand far exceeding supply. The Palisade, on sale for only about half the year in the US managed to outsell the CX-9 by almost 2,000 units. The CX-9 was even outsold by eight luxury brand midsize SUV's. The current 2020 calendar year looks no better, especially considering the COVID challenge to automotive sales. If Mazda manages to sell 25,000 CX-9's this year, it will be surprising. Sales, of course, do not necessarily equate to quality. But in the important mainstream midsize 3 row CUV segment it's difficult to deny that very few customers looking for a midsize 3 row crossover that's one of the largest vehicles in the segment with the least interior passenger and cargo room and a drive train identical to the CX-5 in a vehicle that weighs nearly 600 lbs more. The CX-9 doesn't need a refresh; it needs a complete replacement.

@stephenhendricks103
@stephenhendricks103 4 жыл бұрын
@@eleanormassaro5195 I wouldn't disagree. The reason that other manufacturers have moved to eight, nine, or ten gears is two-fold: to improve fuel economy and boost performance in small displacement engines. But physics is physics and more gears means more complex challenges in terms of gear selection in varying conditions. The situation is analogous to bicycle manufacturers who began adding more and more gears to their products over the years to improve both performance and "economy" in the form of muscle power required. The reason that Mazda has refrained from following the trend is simple. As the smallest independent mainstream manufacturer on the planet Mazda lacks the resources to develop more complex and more capable transmissions. Instead, they rely on tuning of a turbocharged engine to supply prodigious torque for performance even if fuel economy is sacrificed. The reason Mazda uses the same engine/drive train combination in the CX-9, CX-5, Mazda6, and (soon) in the Mazda3 is simple. They don't have the resources to do otherwise, at least not in the time frame met by other manufacturers.

Stephen Hendricks, I disagree...they can implement 7-8-9-10 speed tranny if they wanted to not because they’re small or can’t afford or have little resources (not to say they don’t) but rather they really don’t see the need to as they meet the CAFE standards. Manufacturers build vehicles not only to sell, make money and satisfy consumers but as well as to meet gov’t standards like the CAFE. In fact out of all the manufacturers they have the best CAFE (only because they have limited models) but if they weren’t meeting CAFE, they’d be putting higher # of gears and hybrid tech. No wonder a lot use CVT, 7-10 speed tranny and hybrid! Btw, you over analyze and rant on every single CX9 review out there...don’t you have better things to do?!

You know what is funny, the CX-9 is a mid size SUV, is actually larger than and wider than a Honda Pilot but the Honda Pilot has wayy more space in the interior, even tho the CX-9 is very big it has less cargo space than a Honda CR-V, what happened there Mazda ?

I bought a new 2021 Mazda CX-5. I believe the CX-9 has the same engine. It burns engine oil from day one and getting progressively worse. I looked up and found a bulletin for my car to be repaired. I took it in and they agreed that my car fell under that bulletin according to the VIN but, that I had to wait for the engine light to come on. By my calculation that won't happen until one oil change after my warranty is up. Don't take a chance and buy Mazda’s. They don't stand by their product unlike Honda. Mazda will do whatever it takes to avoid paying to fix the problem, even when they themselves admit that there's a problem. My advice, stick to Hondas and Toyotas. I’ve had problems with their cars in the past but, they always fixed my warranty issues without question and after that they ran forever. Don’t fall for talking point that Toyota and Mazda are now collaborating and even use the same assembly line. It means nothing. There's a class action lawsuit against them (Haven't responded). I personally have filed with the Mazda, BBB, Attorney General, and a consumer agency. It's been two weeks and nothing. I'm lining up a lawyer as my last resort. Don't go through this hell, buy a Toyota or Honda instead.

You’re experience doesn’t speak for the majority. Most Mazdas are very reliable plus it’s common for modern turbo engines to burn some oil.

The CX-5 is a quiet, refined drive. That being said the front seat bottoms don’t offer any thigh support, the arm rest is too far back, the dead pedal is too far forward and the steering wheel doesn’t pull out far enough. In addition the A pillar is too thick and it’s hard to see around. If you are 6ft tall or above, don’t buy this car. The driving position is flawed.

You've been telling them to "pick up the pace" on the head unit for multiple years. You used to talk about possibly future updates Mazda might put out to fix this. It's pretty clear at this point they don't care. It's not going to happen. Sad.

Mazda's interiors are becoming Copy & Paste across all of their models. Mazda needs to step it up with the interiors and offer better options for example, Panoramic sunroof etc. Get rid of that awful cheap tablet design on the dashboard! They need to do better! BTW., I am an owner of Mazda CX-3 and Mazda MX-5 convertible hardtop!

absolutely agree. This is Mazdas problem right now. Their biggest problem is actual size and not being competitivein each class with useable space, but style wise they have an issue. Plastering the same look both inside and out does not make any model any more special than the other. it's just small, medium and large sizes now. If someone does not like their style, they will walk from entire brand. Plus, personally, because all Mazdas look alike, I feel like even though they don't sell many vs Honda and Toyota etc Im getting sick of the design.
