Why we chose this car

The Mazda CX-5 is often at the top of ranking for compact crossover SUV's in the USA. It compares to the Toyota RAV4, Honda CR-V, Subaru Forester, Hyunday Tucson, Jeep Cherokee, Nissan Rogue, Kia Sportage, GMC Terrain, Volkswagen Tiguan, Chevy Equinox, Ford Escape, and more.
So how does it stack up against the competitors, and why do the magazines keep ranking it #1? In this video I tell you why WE chose this car over the others and if it lives up to the hype.

I realize that this is an older review, but it is still just as relevant. I will be getting a new car for my wife around Memorial Day. This review is part of why I am leaning heavily to a 2024 CX 5. I doubt you still check on this post any more, but on the off chance that you do, thank you very much for taking the time and putting in the effort to post this.

We just purchased a 2023 CS-5 Signature Edition....the one with all the bells and whistles, including ventilated seats and a 360 degree cameral. These are both features we truly love. Even though it's brand new, I am beating the EPA estimated mileage figures. We find your review to be "spot on" with respect to interior quality, exterior styling, and value. We also respect and generally agree with your comments regarding things that could be improved. Ours has the 2.5 turbo, and we find the power to be more than adequate, and the handling characteristics are outstanding. I am a committed car guy. I am currently 80 years old, and since a sophomore in college, I've owned over 150 different vehicles. I would definitely place the CX-5 in my top three. I thought your review was objective, truthful and very well done.

@@saylorgirl799, I think it was about the firmness. I think, soft seats may get too soft over time. The seats in CX-5 vary between the trims, so you need to pick the trim (basically the engine and the price level) and test the specific seats in person.

I'm a Mazda technician and would just like to say that you did a great job with this video, but regarding the infotainment system, your local Mazda dealer can update the MZD software for you, as well as every other computer system in the vehicle. Mazda's software has come a long way since 2017, they have ironed out a lot of bugs and made many improvements, including the slow and unresponsive concern you have. In terms of safety, the FSC (forward sensing camera) and radar systems as well as blind spot monitoring systems can all be updated. Every even service has an MMDS update on the job card, normally dealerships only update the PCM and TCM (powertrain control module and transmission control module) unless there is concern otherwise, but you can request that you want all computer systems updated just to be sure they are all checked. Updates such as the PCM and TCM have the ability to improve efficiency, so there you go :)

You covered everything and are eloquent and your presentation is clear, concise and easy to understand and remember. I read a lot of reviews of different vehicles and yours to me is the best I've come accross. @@bob-o9865 Drive a CX-50 before you choose between either. The perks of the RAV4 are that it's more disconnected from the road & has lighter steering. The perks of the CX-50 is that it feels very connected to the road, very heavy & precise steering, but are still comfortable. I find interior quality on the Mazdas to be much nicer, and can't stand the Toyota infotainment. I have about 1000 miles behind the wheel of a fully-loaded Venza, and 7500 miles on a CX-50. Additionally, I find the adaptive cruise control to be more reactive on the Mazda, but it also doesn't have active lane centering like the Toyotas do. Overall, the CX-50 is the right vehicle for me, but if i'm driving very long distance in a rental car, I find the Venza to be a very comfortable cruiser. I find the RAV4 to be similar in tuning, but just quieter and more plush.

Great review. We retired at 70 in 2015 and we decided on the Mazda CX5 SUV as our 'retirement' car. 7 years on and we still love it. A smaller car would have been harder to get in and out of as we age. It's easy and comfortable driving and we love the screen for reversing. It's made backing so much simpler for us. It also tows our little 11ft caravan easily. We have the mid blue colour. We live in Australia and cars have doubled in price recently, otherwise we would definitely purchase a 2022 model, however we take good care of it and in 7 years have travelled many KMs without any mechanical issues and it still looks fabulous. Thanks for the great review.

I had a 2015 Mazda 3 GT with the tech package. It was flawless in the 5 1/2 years o owned it. I did the research and bought a 2020 CX-5 Signature with the Turbo. After 2 months I can say it is my all time favorite vehicle. 310 pounds feet of torque makes it a pleasure to drive and it handles even better than my Mazda 3. I had owned a 2012 Honda CRV for 3 years and absolutely hated the way that vehicle handled, going into a corner on a reverse banked road, it had body roll that made you feel the car was going to roll. If you are looking for a vehicle with the benefits of a crossover and the handling of of a sedan, do yourself a favor and test drive a Mazda CX-5. Nothing is perfect and the only complaint I have on my CX-5 is the slow start up on the infotainment system. This is a great review, very accurate in detail.

I stumbled upon this review just one month after buying a 2024 CX-5, looking for youtube videos on the infotainment system. We were finally moving on from our 2001 Honda CR-V, a wonderful vehicle. We looked at the RAV4 (I am 6' tall and my head hit the sealing when I was in the passenger seat. We looked at the Subaru Forester, which gets the best Consumer Reports review. We didn't like the salesperson. We looked at the Honda CR-V, but it just was not our beloved 2001 Honda. Finally we looked at the CX-5. With hearing issues at our senior age, the acoustic glass that reduced road noise was the best-selling point of the Mazda. We can one another when we are driving. Next was the sound system. Music and talk were super clear, again for us old drivers with hearing aids! Finally, the CX-5 just feels fun to drive. I think the positives you mentioned the video, still hold true.

This was one of the best reviews I've seen on this vehicle. Full disclosure: I bought a 2020 Mazda CX-5, Turbo, Signature edition. I absolutely love the vehicle, and for that increase in cost the vehicle improvement is so worth it - especially the turbo engine paired with AWD. I think your review is incredibly accurate when pointing out the areas for improvement. Even on the 2020 model, those exact same opportunities exist (infotainment improvement, very slightly less space than others, and very sensitive collision avoidance) - but they are not enough to dissuade me from the vehicle. Compliments on the review, nice job done.

Thanks so much for your comment! I'm currently considering the 2021 CX-5, Turbo, Signature edition. I was a bit concerned about the miles per gallon because even without the turbo is lower than I've had in the past. But I've been really leaning toward the thought that the extra cost (of the Sig w Turbo) and reduced miles per gallon are well worth it for the awesome leather, turbo, and extra amenities. Again, thanks so much for your comment!!

@@laurie9437 So far I get about 21 MPG around town (and that's in Florida, that land of traffic signals. FDOT loves traffic signals!). I get about 25 on the highway. The difference in performance with the turbo engine will convince you that the vehicle has a moderate-sized 6-cylinder engine in it. The turbo is actually quite fast to kick in, but there is a noticeable (although mild) lurch when you go from a complete stop to a moderate gas-pedal-push. I don't mind it, but it is different from a non-turbo engine. As for the amenities, yeah - I think they're worth it. In fact, I compared this to the BMW (comparable model) and even with their added packages it didn't even come close to the features in the CX-5 Sig. Dollar-for-Dollar, if you are looking for something with a nod to "luxury" I feel it is a great value. I never gave Mazda a second look before, and this is my first. I am quite impressed. Good luck with your choice, I hope you get exactly what you want.

Good review. I have a 2014 Mazda CX-5 that just hit 150,000 miles. I have loved the car. It's probably been one of the most worry-free vehicles I have owned. I have had zero issues with it other than when the serpentine belt broke on it and had to be changed, but belts are just a part of regular maintenance. I think Mazda is a great car company.

I own a 2016 Mazda 3 and love it. I usually go for smaller cars for handling and nimbleness. I got to drive a 2017 CX-5 and was expecting a lot of body roll and a more heavy boat-like feel, but was instead blown away by how similar it felt to the Mazda 3. Mazda products continue to impress me.

Bought a used 2017 CX-5 in April 2020 with 34,500 miles. I love it! Prior to buying anything, I perused Consumer Reports, Edmunds, etc and compared all the spec's on CX-5's, CR-Vs, HR-Vs, RAV-4s, etc. Did this for about 6 months. Also, surveyed Carvana, Carmax, AutoNation, etc for a "GREAT DEAL". Came down to my experience with Mazdas. Wife had a 2006 Mazda Tribute which she put a ton of miles on without any issues. She traded that in on a new 2016 CX-5 and now has 150K miles on it. (We took it everywhere!) and have not had any trouble with it. When my 2017 CX-5 came on the market, price was right and I paid cash for it!

I’ve been a Toyota customer for over 25 years but did not like the RAV4 as I found it was noisy and nowhere near the quality of Mazda CX-5. Sitting right below you in my 19 GT Reserve, best damn car I've ever owned. Turbo makes a ton of power, but with the big torque figure you can manage good fuel efficiency too. Just gotta keep my foot off the fun pedal! Only complaint, and you can see it here... The hatch reaches wayyyy too high. Had to calibrate the height so I don't hit my garage door when they're both open. Didn't have that problem in my cx-7 although they're identical in size. Simply the shape of the roofline and hinge placement.

Also a 2017 owner, basically everything in the video is spot on, especially the blind spot monitoring sensitivity. One of the only things I still kind of lament that I felt it was missing compared to competitors was that many have an option for a panoramic sunroof while the CX-5 does not. The amount of extra sunlight a big ceiling window provides really makes a car feel so much more spacious all else being equal, but it's not enough to beat out all the other factors in Mazda's favor.

I just bought the 23 CX50 after having owned 7 consecutive Hondas. I bought it for many of the same reasons that you cited for buying your CX5. I've only had it a week, but have driven about 800 miles, most of that on the steep, winding roads in the Adirondacks near lake placid, and some highway driving as well. I am not disappointed in the least. The car I traded in was a 2011 Accord with the 3.5 liter V6 which was made for driving. This CX50 actually comes about as close as an SUV possibly could. With the advantage of the versatility the SUV offers. I really miss the horsepower and torque of the big Honda engine, but the naturally aspirated Mazda with the 6 speed transmission doesn't feel like a dog, and still loads of fun to drive. I'm sure I'll have this vehicle for a long time

I own two Mazda CX-5’s. A 2015 and 2016. Both cars have been flawless and 100% reliable. 120k on my 2015 and 158k on my 2016. They both still run, shift and handle like new. The only maintenance items done for both cars include tires, oil changes, air filters and brake pads. Nothing else whatsoever. Mazda cars are built in Japan and they have excellent quality and engineering compared to other cars. They can easily last several hundred thousand miles with proper care and maintenance. The automatic transmission in these cars is excellent and has superior longevity hand down. Mazda engineers designed it with reliability and drivability in mind and it shows. No regrets here.

I have a 2014 CX-5 Diesel Auto, I really like it. Had a few unusual mechanical faults early on, but no plans to replace it just yet. I bought it used so the previous problems might be attributable to that. 1) First year of ownership, service by main Mazda dealer identified a problem with the auto gearbox, they elected to replace it under warranty; it's been fine since. That was very surprising, low mileage around 25k miles. 2) Drop link on front suspension worn/rattle, again a surprise at only around 30k miles. I had them replaced on both sides. The Main dealer has been very good and I am pleased that Mazda are pro-active with various recalls. The car had already undergone a recall for engine idle speed, then I had to put it with the Mazda dealer for the rear door dampers.

Great honest and thorough review! We bought a new 2019 in May of that year, my first ever new car at age 53. It is just now about to hit 20k miles. I live 5 minutes from work and I'm the main driver, husband only drives it on trips. He's a truck guy, lol. When we started shopping around, I bought an online, one month subscription to Consumer Reports. I did ALL the research, including free information from other websites and KZbin videos as well. After researching for about a week online (after work and on weekends, because that's what I do on a big purchase, everyone should) I decided I wanted to take a test drive with the CX-5 first. Well, we didn't go to any other dealerships, we were hooked! My husband pays more attention to "fit and finish" than I do, and he was very impressed with the interior. We did get the Touring edition (which is called something different now), which is basically a step above...basic. 😆 But Mazda labels a lot of things as standard that other cars don't. I wanted the Touring edition pretty much for one reason: the Bose stereo system. I also wanted a sunroof (which I never use, we live in the lower Midwest and it's either stifling hot and disgustingly humid 🥵 or cold 🥶). I love the way this car handles. It has a system on it that is patented; when you make turns there's very little "lean." I'd say for a woman, I'm a fairly aggressive driver. You can definitely feel this in my car vs. being a passenger or driver in others. It's pretty amazing. Downsides: I don't care for the 7" infotainment system screen, even with Android Auto. It just seems way behind any other. Like it was made in 2009 instead of 2019. Many have complained about the button/dial system but personally I love it. I feel like I can use it safely while driving, no taking my eyes off the road...that is what it will allow me to use while driving. Love the bells and whistles, like the cruise control system, the lane change warning, etc. We got ours in white (specific name?) It really stands out in the sun! Also like the "sport" mode for passing. Yeah it ups your rpms, but I don't mess around when passing. It's the easiest car I've ever had to handwash also. And we have LOTS of bugs this time of year. I apologize for this being so long, but wanted to give details. Oh, by the way, I LOVE LOVE LOVE the interior of yours, wow! Gorgeous! 😍

We bought the 2021 CX-30 Turbo and love it. Drives amazing in the mountains, especially when you pop it into sport mode. Nice to hear all the positive reviews from long term users. We will see how it goes. FWIW, I wanted the red paint with the white leather interior but my wife insisted on the pearl white with black interior. FWIS, the turbo version of this gets lower gas mileage. We get around 21+ around down. but we do very short local driving. If we get out on longer trips, it bumps up immediately.

Great review. I love my 2020 CX-5 AWD. I'm a 27 years old single male and some friends made fun of me when I got it instead of a sports car saying I got a “dads/moms car”, but I like going to the mountains and long road trips. The adaptive cruise control is also awesome. I have no regrets at all. What an amazing car!

Jeff Morse yep! I agree. But there seems to be this idea that these cars are “dads cars” or “moms cars” and if you’re male, young and single you should own something else lol. I don’t care though. I’m super happy with it! 😃🤙🏼

Danilo Prado I have not gotten that idea from anyone I know. Those who have commented really like it’s more aggressive non boxy SUV styling. So as you said, ‘don’t care’. You know how good a vehicle you have along with you me other Mazda CX-5 drivers/owners
