I love the overall concept and entry into this category of electric yachts but I do not like the overall design choices and setup. I do like the minimalization, clean lines and the less is more idea. I agree with others that solar is poorly designed and seems an afterthought, apparently they have not looked at industry standards with other manufacturers like Silent Yachts!

Interesting boat but I wish they would have gone with rigid solar vice the flat-flexible panels. Regardless of the wattage, they are only around 1/2 to 1/3 as efficient. Balance Catamarans knows this. Thanks for the tour!

What does this mean in practical terms though? I want solar to put power in the batteries. I want them to be efficient in terms of weight and cost. Electrical efficiency, or solar power conversion efficiency or a number of other ways to measure efficiency don't matter so much. Or is there something else I'm missing?

Love the design BUT they don’t have the heart in the solar - that little bit of solar isn’t going to power that cat very far without that generator.

I think the idea is to have the solar panels power the yacht at anchor so you only need to run the genny infrequently. With love, Ken

@@kenstephens2955 Exactly right. The solar is to power house loads, including cooking, watermaker, AC, etc., while at anchor. Lots of cruisers are already doing this and implemented it independently (DIY).

Ben, youtube keeps unsubcribing me! WTF, are the electric motors mounted to sea drives or shafts? I like the overall design similar to gunboats and H&H, Balance but the hulls look very skinny? I weigh about 250lbs and so do my friends, so there goes your weight limit.

The design brief is good, but reviewing this boat makes me less favorable towards Tony Grainger designs. The forward cockpit idea is nice, but has some strange design decisions, along with the rest of the boat. The many hard corners and edges look hazardous, and the space utilization seems less than great.

I'm conflicted in my opinion as well. The hulls are extremely narrow, they must have gone for performance over any long term comfort. The plain (light) interior is further confirmation as are the daggerboards and oversized longeron. This yacht is made for fast passages under sail.

@@jamesaron1967 Agree, but there are other performance boats that have a better design and better balance of comfort, such as Balance Catamarans, and arguably even Seawind. (Tony Grainger actually designed some of the older Seawinds.)

@@LoanwordEggcorn Yep, quite a few manufacturers offer a better balance of comfort and speed. I like the newest HH models like the 44 and upcoming 52. They are electric-centric models that have better design in my opinion and are nicer overall.

Windelo cracked the forward cockpit helm position and also have so many other great design features, and Windelo cost half of this or less, with a better solar and electric suit installation included.

No way I'd get used to that helm. I prefer the aft helm with lots of seating around.

Check out Windelo though: They have finally cracked it, making the forward cockpit helm position livable in real life!

The Windelo 50 has cracked the forward cockpit helm position, which Chris White did not do in his original designs and Ocean Renegade surely did not either! This is just the Chris White design repeated, with that awkward helm position basically in open space in the galley! No seating or even a standing position with anything to lean against, and if you need to adjust the sails in rough weather you still have to go outside forward to do so! Windelo has solved it once and for all, simply by making that cockpit with a dual helm even fully enclosed both forward and also into the living area behind as well. On top Windelo 50 comes with much more solar, a better entire managing system and also better electric engines, which also acts as hydro generators at sail, and for less than half the price of this odd boat!

It's not really practical to move a boat very far on solar alone. Wind power (sails) are more practically powerful.

Batteries warranty is for 8 years...by then battery and solar tech will have moved on a lot and you can still pass some of them on for other use or reconfiguring.

Not true mate. Lithium Iron Phosphate batteries have useful lives in multiple decades. They're highly durable, reliable and safe. P.S. Many of the mineral providers for these batteries are Ozzie miners.
