Daily drive a 997.1 and it never fails to put a smile on my face. I recommend every driving enthusiast try a 911 at least once.
@Superevilfrog3 жыл бұрын
My 997.1 sleeps during the winter, and I don't take it to work. Both other than that I drive it as much as I can. 16 years and the car still feels fantastic. I was given a Cayenne loaner when I took it into for service. The interior is light years ahead of my car. But when I'm driving it, I really don't feel I'm missing too much. And yes, every driving enthusiast should try a 911 at some point. Even if it is the dreaded 996. One that has been taken care of is still a fantastic car to drive.

J S it’s fascinating to see how far cars have come but also highlight some of the reasons why enthusiasts like older cars, e.g. for their hydraulic steering or mechanical simplicity
@JS-hw8ve4 жыл бұрын
@@neelparmar6690 I went on a rant the other day about older cars. Not so much that they are better than the technological wonders of today, because they aren't, but because they made us better drivers. There's more to driving than just getting from A to B on the highway fast. These days, lane keep assist is ubiquitous, adaptive cruise has made is to you don't even need to touch the pedals, and you can parallel park by touching a button. I know people who have never been behind the wheel of anything older than a 2005 Ford F-150. They don't know how to drive with no power steering. They don't know about life without being able to hook up their phones to the stereo. It's funny, how so many drivers cry over the looming loss of manual transmissions, when they never really drive on their own anyway. Those old cars made us part of the drive. The immediacy of driving them was not unlike riding a motorcycle. We were part of the road and the world around us in a way we can't be in modern cars. The connection to the road was direct, and there was less safety gear to separate us from the experience. This is why it's great to see the side by side between the modern and the old. It shows how far we have come and what we used to consider state of the art. And Thomas and James did a wonderful job of describing the sensations of old compared to the sleek new experience. Thanks for taking the time to contribute on the way things were.

@@JS-hw8ve I agree with you. My first manual "sporty" car was a 1985 VW GTI which I purchased new. It was featured in Motor Trend's , "Car of the Year", that year and 2 years later I traded in for a 1987 16V GTI which was the 3rd car in my life up until then that I modified. That thing did not have power steering and didn't need it. It was standard and handled amazingly well and was fast even by today's standards....for a hot hatch. I loved driving it and I lived in Toronto where the roads were amazing compared to Montreal where I moved back to in 1987.
@JS-hw8ve4 жыл бұрын
@@xorbitman Good on you, bud. I didn't know what a "hot hatch" was until much later. Where I am from, the sports car guys and muscle car guys had less friendly names for that type of car. My own opinion on a person's car is a lot more welcoming, and comes from understanding where they come from, and what the use of them would be. Asia and Europe are tighter, more compact, with narrower roads, so handling and maneuverability were important. North America has lots of space and vast distances to cross, so power was at a premium, as well as comfort for long, long rides. Then there's taxes and other issues to contend with. As long as your car does what you need it to do, safely, then you have a damn fine car. And I do so love me a good Golf. The platform is far more comfortable than the last Jetta I was in. Was looking at buying one of the 2020 Golf Rs back in Nov.

I have a 2010 997.2 Carrera 4S manual and I have two friends with 991.2 Carrera S cars. I live at altitude so my power deficit to those cars is even more exaggerated. I admit I sometimes want another 50hp or 60hp in my 997.2 and I am jealous of how fast their newer cars are. I also appreciate the extra refinement of their newer cars many times as the road noise, harshness and interior rattles are the biggest 997.2 drawbacks. But at the end of the day, there is something just intangibly more engaging for me in the 997.2. When I am out for a spirited drive, I love that raw, small feeling, more visceral experience I get in the 997.2. I feel like the 991.2 and by extension the 992 is a bit "too modern" which is great, but I wanted a 911 specifically for that old-school analog feel. So I am sticking with the 997.2. (I have a twin turbo BMW - also 6-speed manual- for my power rush, plus my Model S P90D). I also highly recommend the harder to find 'full leather' option which the car in the video did not have, it helps the slightly more dated interior feel more upscale and classic. Lastly, I have seen the 997.2 tested 0-60 at 4.5s for the manual and 4.3s for the new at the time PDK.

Great video, guys!! Love all three of these 911s, and hope to be able to afford one someday.

The 996 and 997 are the perfect years for Porsche. Like freedom in Canada and America, I miss those models.

I loved y’all’s energy and banter. I have test drove a 997.2 2008, tiptronic, and accidentally hit the tip and knocked it down a gear going into a turn. I didn’t like the tip. The 2010 manual is the ideal car for me and price. I love this review because that’s the great thing for Porsche, their older cars are just as sought after as their new ones. Keep up the good work guys .

997.2 doesn’t have tip, it has pdk. 997.1 has tip.

The 997 is the last generation of 911 where the body is compact.

I’ve always thought Porsche were great cars but didn’t really LIKE them... I think this video changed my mind.

I dont like their pricing, especially 911, panamera and other stuff is actually pretty affordable, but with 911 you pay like 20% tax for it's name

Oh what 1 year can do in terms of pricing. Good luck trying to find a 997.2 S manual for $60k in 2021.
@s.gharavi16149 ай бұрын
It'll be under $40k in 12 months. 😊
@KM20015 ай бұрын
How's that working out? Closer to double $40k at this point and only rising.

A really sweet comparison! Loved it, and many thanks. Makes me miss my 997.1 all over again.

i remember in 2009, i thought that used porsche 911 prices would plummet permanently, and that the middle class of america/canada would rise. boy was i wrong.

This has to be my favourite old vs new! But there are design changes in the 992 I wish they would have left on the table. Such as the gloss black parts on the exterior. Also, I'd take the 997 hydraulic steering in a 911 any day. But that 993 wins in my books.
@iluvcakes192 жыл бұрын
Eh... 993... Would rather have 964.
