2020 Porsche Macan Turbo vs Range Rover Velar SVAutobiography review - the best fast SUV? | Autocar

The Porsche Macan Turbo is a fast, do-anything Porsche SUV and the Range Rover SVAutobiography Dynamic is Britain's 4x4 alternative. Both are meant to do a similar thing: be a sports car, off-roader and estate car all in one. On paper they're quite similar: the Porsche Macan Turbo costs from £68,000 and does 0-62mph (0-100kph) in 4.1seconds, thanks to plenty of power - 434bhp - from its 2.9-litre twin turbocharged V6.
The Range Rover Velar SVAutobiography Dynamic, from Land Rover's SVO department, does things in a slightly more old-school way. It has a 5.0-litre supercharged V8 with 542bhp, but it's a heavier car so it can get from 0-60mph in 4.3sec. It costs from £86,000.

Surprised you couldn’t get the Macan Turbo’s back end to move. In mine (last model Turbo), with PSM sport (or off) it’s very easy to get it a bit sideways. Especially on these cold wintery U.K. roads.

The thing about depreciation is you don’t care if you can afford to be buy either of these new. On the other hand I really like huge depreciation because I buy used. In general Range Rover depreciates much more over time witch is reasonable because maintenance on a Range Rover is more expensive.

Well yeah a porsche will always be more expensive because of the badge. But to your point, i'd rather have the SUV for the shorter length, the higher seating position and the (admittedly not great but better than those of a station wagon) off road capabilities. Why would you drive a station wagon? Those things are as long as a battleship!

John Bae for sure. That and the high sitting position are the only subjective reasons to prefer a SUV over a estate car. Regarding all the features they were talking about in the video (performance, comfort, practicality, handling, efficiency...), a estate is objectively superior. There’s no way to justify the purchase of a SUV from a rational point of view. It’s a matter of physics.

Sandouras the BMW 3 series touring is just 3cm longer than the Macan. Length is not the problem. Off road capabilities. How many SUV buyers drive their cars off road? One out of ten? The Porsche badge is more expensive than the BMW one? Not 30k more in any case. Check it out comparing equivalent segment cars. M8 GC vs Panamera Turbo, X3M vs Macan Turbo, X5M vs Cayenne Turbo...

Only Land Rover product I've ever bought is a 110.. I knew what I was buying and accepted its foibles and knew what to expect from a design that hasn't changed much since 1948.. Having owned 2 Macan's in the past, they're exceptionally good to drive and reliable.. As for Range Rover.. I can't understand the masses of people still flocking to showrooms like zombies.. You'll need anger management or worse, therapy after owning one.. from experience..

VoltBolt Games I actually test drove the RS but it was pretty slow and lethargic compared to my C63...and it was so quiet haha so that was out of the question. Drove the GLC63 as well but the new ones with the OPFs also kill the sound so I think my SVR is the best option. My dealer told me the Velar is being discontinued anyways

Don't think these are comparable. You can compare the Macan to F-Pace SVR, Stelvio QV... you know - SUVs made for taking corners fast. The Velar SVAD? Don't think there is much to compare it to. Bigger top of the line MBs and BMWs and Audis, but these come as the RRS competitors, not the Velar. I own the V6 diesel Velar, my only regret is I missed the V6 petrol engine (they've stopped selling it some time ago) and I couldn't wait for JLR to release the hybrid V6 petrol that is somewhere on the 2021-2022 lists.

Couple of genuine questions. You say the Macan is "one car that can do everything". Can you justify this? Looking around KZbin it seems the Macan has about zero off road capability. Therefore it is not an off roader and cannot do off road things and activities. Is this not a HUGE miss when it is meant to be a 4x 4 SUV? Wouldn't a 4wd Estate car also do everything the Macan does but better? Next question, you say the Jaguar AJV8 is 'old school'. How so? They use continuously variable intake and exhaust camshaft timing and are direct injection. Sounds rather on par with 99% of the other mass produced V8 engines on offer and ahead of some. You also bemoan 22mpg from an off road capable 4x4 packing 550bhp --- come on WTF. Are you mental or trying an attempt at poor humour? Seriously what other 550bhp AWD 4x4's of the same weight do anything significantly different in the mpg department. You even go on to say you'd expect a sports car of the same performance to do no better. What sort of mpg do you honestly think you should be getting in 2020 from such an engine????

SUVs aren't really my speed. But, between these two, the Porsche is cheaper, more economical and drives better on-road. And, since it's a Range Rover, the Velar will be a garage queen that causes you no end of grief. I understand that AutoCar wants to wave the flag and hates to dump on the Range Rover, but it's really an easy choice.

Range rovers have lots of electrical problems brand new so much in fact it takes around 3 to 4 months to get an appointment at the dealership as they’re all broken and customer service is terrible steer clear my advise look into it yourself

Has to be the Porsche. I’ve had a Velar and they are just not as well made as the Germans. You get electrical faults, screens not firing up, door handles not popping out etc. And they always seem to break down. I would never own any Land Rover/Jaguar product that wasn’t under full manufacturers warranty put it that way.
