This Video can mislead many new RAM buyers. My 2021 fully loaded Laramie with 3.92 gets 29-32 MPG on the highway. Yesterday I returned from camping, it was 521 miles round trip road trip with 4 mountain passes on the way with 4 people in the cabin and full bed of stuff and trip computer says 29.8 MPG for 521 miles and 9 hours engine on. It’s freaking amazing truck!

Thanks for your input. I'm doing a bit of research on the Ecodiesel and this video left me a bit disappointed as the one on the lot near me has 3.92. Glad to hear somone else had a better experience.

@@braden9536 Glad it was helpful. Also I think 3.92 gear works perfect with this engine. 2000 rpm is 72 MPH and 80 MPH I have 2200 RPM, so engine spins more happy then it would be with 3.21 with amazing fuel economy!

I just bought a 2021 Ram Big Horn with the Eco Diesel and 3.92 gear-- I have 27 miles on it! Making 26 mpg is a good start and may do a video myself. Indianapolis has the 465 loop which is about 52 miles-- we'll see.

Any kind of break in aside, I can just about guarantee you that limited is heavier with both the trim package and especially with the Ran boxes. I was super on the fence between 3.21 and 3.92 with the 2021 Ecodiesel I've ordered, but because I don't tow very often and the truck will primarily be a commuter / grocery getter, I ordered the 3.21 gears. My long term plan is to replace the gears with 3.55 (like I wish Ram would have offered with the ED from build) and also swap out the factory LSD with a helical LSD (what Ram should be be offering in the first place) once the OEM LSD clutch packs wear out. I'm pretty much thinking this may be the last internal combustion vehicle I ever buy 😂.

Adding 5 miles per hour over 70 takes a lot more energy. That ads a 35 percent increase of force. That costs mpg.

Great video. I recently purchased almost the identical truck. 2020 1500 Longhorn EcoDiesel, 3:92 ratio, no air suspension either. I love it. I've been averaging 9.4 L/100km so far and I live in DT Toronto! Getting in and out of my condo garage is a pain as I'm on P4 so I lose a lot of fuel economy going up and down all the ramps. I'm moving home to BC in a week, hence why I bought the truck, not your typical DT Toronto vehicle. As a reference, my prior car was a 2020 BMW M340i inline-six that gave me an average fuel economy of 10.6 L/100KM. Granted that was a sports car that you just wanted to drive fast all the time! Happy to not be paying Premium Gas prices either! Keep up the great content.

First off, thank you for making this video. This is critical information for some of us before purchase and it's rare to get good comparisons. As I've read, the trucks without air ride get the front Retractable Air Dam. The trucks with air ride do not. In theory, there shouldn't be as drastic of a difference of air flow, but there likely is some. I noticed neither truck had an all-terrain, and seemed similar, but were they the exact same tire? Grip and rolling resistance, as well as tire weight, affect MPG. The exact tire specs are critical for a true MPG test. Did you happen to check inflation pressure on both trucks carefully? For highway purposes, 5 psi could make a big difference. The mileage is certainly a large factor if they're very different. But how much of a difference are we talking about? Looked like only 300 miles difference. Finally, you mentioned more steady state 70 mpg in the 3.92 truck while having more traffic with the 3.21. The lower speeds and other vehicles affecting (positively) the aero dynamics are again, big differences. I'd be happy to see an update with more mileage and some of the above considerations, if they've affected anything or were different. Thanks!

@MickPsyphon
@MickPsyphon 4 жыл бұрын
Aero mode makes a big difference, because it lowers the truck enough to improve aerodynamics. Drag is a huge factor affecting MPG of a vehicle. Also, once that EcoDiesel breaks in, the difference will be noticeable both at the pump and behind the wheel.

@MickPsyphon
@MickPsyphon 3 жыл бұрын
@@joshuakerstein9573 Good point! Wheel a larger diameter makes a difference, too; however, that mostly impacts city/local driving. If you do a lot of highway driving and use the cruise control, it's not as much of an issue. (Unless you have adaptive cruise control, which can result in increased fuel consumption.) Tyre tread can impact fuel consumption more than wheel diameter, though. If you don't intend to go off-road, or to tow/haul too much, then it's worth sticking with a tyre that has a high treadwear rating, which generally give you great efficiency. Otherwise, get the right tyres for the task at hand.

Just a word of advice. If your going to get a Ram get a 5.7L Hemi. The ecodiesel eats it's own crap and before it has 40,000 miles on it the intake manifold will be caked up with 1/2" of oily soot that totally gums up the entire upper end of the engine..I know from experience with my 2016 Ram 1500 Laramie ecodiesel. The exhaust recirculation system is the same, so the same thing will happen to the 2021 model. I now have a 2019 Ram 1500 Laramie Longhorn loaded out and I am REALLY HAPPY knowing that I won't be having any EGR problems anymore. And I get 23- 24 miles per gallon on the highway, I don't speed I cruze with the adaptive cruise control set at 65 -70 mph. I absolutely loved my Eco diesel before the problems started kicking in around 18,000 miles in.

I have the 2016 Laramie longhorn ecodeisel and I got 18-19mpg in the mountain town I live in. In the morning when I would leave for work i would pull out into traffic the truck would lose power for a second and then take off. I have almost been t boned because of this. So I recently put a stealth module in the increase the gas mileage and hopefully boost performance. It has helped a little bit and I am getting better fuel mileage.(about 20-21mpg in the mountains). Still little lag but if anyone has any better suggestions let me know

3.92 diff is the biggest factor here for the difference. Another 1 is you tire size is the smallest circumference of the entire lineup. If you just changed out your tires to 285 50 22 or swapped rims and went to the 275 60 20's your rpm at 110km/h would be about 1750 . I'd bet you would get half a litre per 100 better just making this one change.

Ok put your thinking king caps on and see what y’all think. The eco diesel and I would probably say diesels in general have their max torque around the 1500 -1800 RPM range. So sense diesel trucks are made for towing and are for the open road, and now days the speed limit is 70-80 MPH I have seen 85 MPH. With the 3.92 gears at the 2000 RPM range your max torque range is down. Your motor is struggling to pull at those speeds. At 2000 RPMs your torque is down. It may even drop down to around 350 FT-LBS. That being said if you have the 3.21 gears at 70 MPH your engine RPMs are in the max torque range of that 1500ish RPM range. This is just food for thought. Think about it.
