I have done the math over and over on the ram ecodiesel. I even built a spread sheet that adds in cost of oil and filter changes. Unless you tow often, have a long commute, or need the extended range it is not worth getting. It is not for everyone. I have a 52 mile commute, tow almost every weekend, and the extended range would give me piece of mind for certain trips I take. It is worth it for me and my next vehicle will definitely be this truck.

Thank you. This was a good comparison. My 2004 Ram 2500 Diesel with 240K miles on it gets 18 mpg daily driving, 20 unloaded highway, and 12 when towing a 7K lbs toy hauler. Wind drag is a big factor in reducing your efficiency. Those new Eco Diesels are nice. I might have to get one if mine ever wears out.

You also did the towing in the snow which doesn’t help. The hemi would be lucky to get 6-8mpg with that weight in those conditions. So depends on how often you tow. Over 11 mpg is still good. A 6.7L Cummins would only get 15 mpg doing that so do you wana pay $1500 more for a hemi, $4k more for ecodiesel or $10k more for Cummins. That’s just the motor cost extra not the trim level and other features.

At 4:22, it would be important for you to mention the ratings they are providing are most likely in US gallons (vs Imperial gallons). The computer calculator in my Tundra provides the calculation in US gallons/mile. To convert that number to Imperial gallons, multiply it by 1.2. When I see 29 highway (at 4:22) for the 4x4 model, I'm not impressed, as my 2010 5.7 ltr Tundra gets 23 at 110 kph on cruise control. However, if they are quoting 29 US gallons, this would convert to 34.8 Imperial gallons, which makes more sense when I compare it to my gas guzzling Tundra. Just a thought. I'm surprised how low the fuel economy is when hauling. I have a similar sized toy hauler and I only get a couple of miles per gallon less (fully loaded with gear) than this Eco diesel. So, needless to say, I'm not impressed with the EcoDiesel. Oddly enough, I was just having a 6 ft conversation (lol) with my neighbor yesterday about his Eco Diesel (he has an older one) and he is under the impression his truck gets a lot better mileage than what is being shown here while he is hauling. But . . . he has the older version before they fixed the emissions, so it's possible he gets better fuel economy with the older version.

I am really thinking of getting the new Ram Ecodiesel. My wife has the beast of a truck with a 2018 Ram 2500 Crewcab Tradesman 4wd Cummins. I currently drive a 2016 Ram 1500 Quadcab Tradesman 4wd Ecodiesel with 153,000 miles. The Ecodiesel has been excellent! The only reason that I would want a new truck is the cab size. I did upgrade to a 2 inch lift. Switch from 265/70-17 tires to 275/70-20's. But will go to 315/70-17's next time, for a better ride on rough highways. I do have a Flowmaster 50 series HD muffler. And a Banks silencer delete tube on the intake. The truck has the 3.92 ratio, but I am considering the 4.56 ratio. This is a California truck. Has 3,096 engine hours, with 51 idle hours. So it does run the big roads as well as some mountain and desert backroads roads. The emissions update was not really a problem. The only problem that I have found is that of the original programming and the 3 software updates that the truck has gotten. Is after a while the truck forgets how to shift cold. That is resolved by using tow haul mode until the engine is over 160°f coolant temperature. Oh, I did add a Bank's iDash for better engine information. I did drive the 401 Queensway back in 1994. I was driving a 1992 Freightliner with a Cummins N14. Canada was soooo nice a place to travel. Liked the adventure. But trucking pays way too little. After I retire from my normal job. I may take the wife out on the road and do the 48 and Canada again. But having my pension monies and social security may make it comfortable.

I had a '14 Ecodiesel. Initially did 27 highway. That steadily declined with multiple "software updates" at dealer which were done due to recurrent check engine lights. It did always tow a similar cargo trailer well but the mpg was similarly reduced. Best I ever got was 13 mpg with that trailer. I recall being very optimistic after seeing that test that magazined did where they got 19 mpg pulling a flatbed with a gen 1 Bronco on it. Yeah, I never got near that towing a cargo trailer. Still, a modern V8 gas motor only does 7-10 mpg or so with a similar trailer so, if you tow a lot, that 11 mpg with a diesel would add up.

Looking forward to more videos like this, looks like it is your new personal vehicle. I am in Ontario aswell and have a nearly identical truck. Wait till you do an oil change, I did my first at about 4000km after a long road trip and the filter alone from the dealer was $125+taxes. Your not just buying the cartridge, they sell you a new cap aswell which says “do not remove on the filter” meanwhile the one you remove from the truck has instructions how to remove it from the cap.. After a 3200km trip I averaged 9.3L/100km, expecting better when it warms up a bit, northern Ontario was still very cold.

The off the line acceleration might be due to gearing. I don't know if there is a difference in the gearing between the generations. Here is where I'm coming from on the gearing part though. Gas engines rev up faster than diesel engines because the internal moving parts of a diesel are heavier. That said a gas engine will run through a low gear faster than a diesel because the diesel takes longer for the engine to accelerate. But a diesel, having more torque, will increase wheel speed faster with a higher gear ratio than a gas engine.

I would really like to have the Ram eco diesel, but there reliability issues scare me off. Also off road is not the want here in Canada. It’s the cost to fill the tank. And 4x4 for our winters. Diesel is cheaper than gas here and diesel is the way to go for high MPG over gas. Full sized trucks with a gas engine are to costly to run here. we pay almost 2 times what the Americans do for fuel. So diesels are a real fuel saver. Do the same test with the V8 Hemi if you can afford the gas

This doing a second click does not make these tests any more accurate because you still can't control how much fuel the tank received. If they want to try and make it a tiny bit more accurate they need to just stop at the first click then add 3/10's of a gallon, that way every fill up gets the exact same amount of fuel on the second fill.

GM's 3.0 2wd actually gets 1mpg better. Off the line is much quicker than the Ram. Real world mpg loops from TFL in US it is better. The power curve is longer and stronger than the Ram. Plus the diesel option is less than Ram. GM's is also an in-line 6. GM's also has more horsepower. GM's is better in every area. Not Ram reported numbers but real world testing. I laugh at all the posts and those on the internet who try to dis diesels over the cost of the engine. I don't know anyone who goes to a dealer and starts looking at window stickers on vehicles to see how much the engine is costing them, they look at the overall price and decided it the price is within what they are willing to pay. Fact: the 3.6 Pentastar is the base engine in the Ram 1500 extra cost $0.00 as the price is built into the MSRP. Add e-torq to the 3.6 Pentastar and the cost goes up. Want a Hemi the cost is around $1,000 dollars, want a Hemi with e-torq and the cost jumps to around $2,500 dollars and if you want the diesel the cost is $4,995 dollars. The jump from the Hemi with e-torq to the diesel is not that much more money.

The laws about not passing to the right were designed to stop people from passing people on two lane roads where traffic would have to leave the roadway onto the shoulder.

Do you have a better way to get real world numbers in a situation like this? I wouldn't say it's flawed. Of course there's some variances in the pump. @@AnissaEx my truck has two valves that make it difficult to actually fill it to the brim. Also, air bubbles can get trapped in the tank that will make their way out while driving, which will effect this and the 2 click method the same. Gas pumps shut off when they sense the fuel getting the nozzle. If the same nozzle is used to top off every time the accuracy shouldn't be effected much because it will stop when the fuel reach the same level every time. And if it's off, and their aren't any air bubbles in the tank, were talking maybe an couple ounces at most.

My 2018 Durango RT awd with the HEMI towing our 5600 lb loaded RV gets 10-11mpg. Not impressed with the ecodiesel. Pretty disappointing.

So It's not just electric cars that suffer when towing ! What have we learned ? That towing sucks ! How many hours and gallons of fuel are wasted every year waiting for the overturned caravan trailer to be removed from the road ! Thinking of buying a caravan ! Get a room instead, it's far less hassle and other road users won't hate you !

Yeah the last Mopar diesel I had was a turd. Jeep Liberty CRD. Couldn't keep it out of the shop, and I babied that thing. Nobody ever got more than 200k miles before major repairs, like rebuilding the top end. These Dodge eco diesels prove that indeed a sucker is born every second.

Yeah duramax slightly better power comes in better seems like eco slowly push the power through they do need a new motor in the lineup but the HEMI is reliable now. Ford and Chevy guys would disagree with u about inline 6 compared to v8 design

Whenever we tow snowmobile trailers, no matter the size, all of our trucks basically go to 20L/100km. Seems like the drag from the wind on an enclosed trailer effects it more than weight

My 16 ecoboost did 9.2L/100km. My 19 6.7L powerstroke is rolling 11.2L/100km on the highway. Towing my 9k 5th wheel I'm getting 22.1L/100km. GCW is 17,500lbs and the trailer is 12'8" tall and 35' long. Way more load and better bang for the buck.
