2020 Subaru Outback: Key Fob Basics

The keyless entry key fob for the 2020 Subaru Outback has a few hidden tricks. In this video we go over some of the more useful ones.

Thank you for explaining how to disable my fobs! I live in Tooele and cars get stolen a lot up here! Thieves are able to steal a push button start car by duplicating the frequency of an unlocked fob that's left near a wall or door inside the house. I don't really understand all the ins and outs of exactly how they do it, but I've been keeping my fobs for my '21 Forester in a metal cookie tin because that's the only info I could find about keeping them from "chatting" with my car all night. Now I can, hopefully, rest easier if I disable them and put them to sleep for the night... and not have to keep both of them in an old cookie tin! 😁👍

Ryan, your videos are some of best out there. When I bought my outback 2020 your videos were suggested by the dealer. (Rather than reading the layers of manuals. ). I think most if not all of your video's are still applicable now for the newer outbacks. You should rename the vidoes for 2020-2023 models. Perhaps you can create new videos covering solutions to problems on 2020. (IE Radio reboots will driving)

My question is: when I am car camping for several days I would want to put my FOB in sleep mode during the night. If I should inadvertently leave the sleeping FOB in the car and and manually lock it (I have a habit of locking the car from the inside door lock when exiting), will I be locked out? Is the only way to get in by having set a 5 digit code in the hatch? I hope to hear from you as I am terrified of doing this.

All trims with the keyless entry support remote start via the MySubaru phone app. It uses the Starlink Safety and Security Plus service. You do have to pay a subscription for it. I find it quite affordable considering all its capabilities (like remote climate control). Check out the "2020+ Subaru Outback Owners" Facebook Group. I have a TEN PAGE guide to Starlink Remote Start posted there. It has tons of information you might find useful. If you want my recommendation, just buy it. Get it for the 7 years. Make sure to use a credit card when you pay for it, don't finance it. If it doesn't work for you, you can get a pro-rated refund.

This disable function on the key fob is very useful. First it prevents the thieves from capturing your signal, expecially when you go to a store and second, you save your battery significantly.

Is there a way to disable the rear hatch button on the key fob? I know you showed how to put it in sleep mode, however just hitting a button wakes it up. I've had the rear hatch open on me several times from the key fob pressing on something in my pocket. Sometimes I have animals in the back area and I don't want the rear hatch to open unexpectedly. You are very knowledgeable about the key fobs. Do you know a way to bypass/hack the remote start fob? This would let one not pay for starlink and not have to carry and purchase second remote start fob. Could be a great secret feature video.

Good question. Here is kind of a long answer... To interact with the Starlink system on the vehicle, a security authentication token between Subaru's servers and the car is required. The token is transferred via an encrypted link. In addition, special security mechanisms are in place to prevent unauthorized tampering with the Starlink system on the vehicle. I'm sure the system isn't perfect. No computer system is. Bypassing the system would require either extensive modifications to the vehicle (replacing the software), or extensive time invested in testing of the system to find a way to illegally exploit a security flaw (and the jail time that goes with it). Either way, one would be better off buying an after-market remote start system. Or even further ahead if one realized the insanely low price of Starlink ($4.46/mo when paying 7 years in advance) compared to other options. The host of additional capabilities beyond remote start make it a no-brainer for many. If a security flaw is discovered, it would be responsible to report the flaw privately to Subaru first so it can be addressed well before the flaw is made publicly known. Cybersecurity experts refer to this as "responsible disclosure." If I did happen to know of a flaw (which I don't), I would be ethically bound to notify Subaru first and not share the information with anyone until the flaw was patched (or a reasonable time for Subaru to respond had elapsed).

Do you know if you can roll down the windows by pressing and holding the unlock button? I had a Nissan and my wife had a Honda that had that feature. It was nice on hot sunny days to help cool the interior before you got in.

Sadly, I don't believe that is an option. What you can do is get Starlink Safety and Security Plus. That allows you to set climate settings via a smartphone app. You can turn on the AC full blast, then remote start the car. You could turn it in to a total icebox before getting in if you want.

It is an official OEM Subaru part, and I just stuck the ownership badges to the bottom. They fit great. You can get 6 or 7 of them on there.

Yes. If you hold the fob directly on the start button, a separate near-field radio inside the fob will be activated and it will unlock the car. Just be sure to get the battery replaced really soon.

How do you keep the rear hatch open and keep the lights on the side mirrors off? We car camp with the rear hatch open with a tent add on.

Try putting a carabiner in the rear gate latch. Put a ribbon on it so you remember to remove it before closing up the hatch. Also set the key fob in to sleep mode to avoid wasting battery life. The lights eventually shut off after 20 minutes or so. If it continues to be an issue, just stuff something over the mirrors like a towel or some oven mitts or something! :)

I did receive two key fobs. Not only do you need to keep any spare in sleep mode, you shouldn't store the key fob within about 10-20 feet of the vehicle unless you put that fob to sleep as well. Otherwise, it will drain the battery as it constantly communicates with the car when it is in range (though there are some battery saver functions).

Great question! When the keyless system is disabled, the fobs can still use up their battery life. Over time they will drain the battery. The purpose of disabling the keyless system is security or safety reasons. For example, if the car will be used in a commercial application an owner might want to turn it off. In fob sleep mode, the keyless system remains active. However, the fob goes in to a special power savings mode designed for long-term storage. In both modes, you can start the car by touching the fob to the start/stop ring (just bring it close). There is a special close-proximity radio that triggers in that case.

Once you open the gas cap and the filling commences for safety reasons can you lock the doors which won’t affect the gas cap while in use? I think this feature could be a safety flaw while stopped at a service station and you can’t relock the doors.

If you take it to a retailer they can carefully get it out for you. The fob actually splits apart so you can change the battery in it. If the key is really jammed in there, it might be difficult to get it out or split the fob without the right tools. They are quite expensive to replace, so it is worth taking some care.

If you leave the fob in the car without it in sleep mode it can drain the battery. For short duration that shouldn't be an issue. If you plan to leave it in there a while, I'd put it in sleep mode to be on the safe side.

Where did you get the Badge of Ownership License Plate Frame?

The ownership badges are ordered from Subaru's website. The frame is a standard OEM part I got from my local Subaru retailer. I just stuck the badges to the frame (they glue on). Fits great, and will be easy to remove if needed.

Ryan I cannot find how to disable the key fob from adjusting my seat settings. Even the dealer didn’t know how! Every time I unlock the door my seat is readjusted. The car has to be in Park with the engine running to press Driver 1 button to put seat where I want it. (I have turned off Driver Recognition) Please help. Thanks 🙏

How to change the battery 2032 by using a flat screw driver but it's hard to open I'm afraid to brake it Key Fob cost about $350 if isn't more to replace? Anyone done it in the comments? I don't undersdand why the didn't put a door for the battery with screw like Honda do. I guess they key interfere.

You use the spare key in the fob to open it, not a screw driver. There is a slot you insert it in to, just a bit, then you kind of gently pry up. It doesn't take much force at all. Watch out for the spring loaded button. You don't want to lose the spring that's on it. There are many videos on KZbin showing how to do this. I'll plan to make one as well.
