I have always wanted a Tacoma on 35's and this is what it takes to make it happen.
I started with the Eibach Pro Truck Lift System Stage 1 which gave me 2.5" of clearance.
eibach.com/us/E80-82-069-01-2...
Second, I had to relocate the cab mount that protrudes into the wheel well. Now that is much easier said than done. However, Runnin4tacos Cab Mount Relocate Kit made quick work of the install.
www.runnin4tacos.com/products...
Lastly, I have to make some modifications to the inner fender.
Watch all the action.
Tools I needed for this job:
Eastwood 175 Welder

Eastwood Versa-Cut 40 Amp Plasma Cutter

Tacoma Dad has a great video on doing the pinch weld. He didn’t cut the pinch weld into strips, but rather cut the fender liner just enough to expose the pinch weld edge. Then you use a big sledge to bang the pinch weld toward the exterior of the truck, not the interior. This keeps the pinch weld intact, and it gives you a new metal surface to drill holes and install screws to remount the cut fender liner right on that bent pinch weld. Ends up looking super clean Great video, thank you

To get the fender liner to form and stay where you want it use a cold wet towel on the end of a hammer against the plastic and it will help reform much more effectively. Really helps the plastic take the new shape.

Great vid man, I am in the process of gathering info on lift ideas...LOL, I am going to do something I normally dont... offer random unsolicited advice. the plasma cutter is an AWESOME way to remove parts fast...but you have the less than optimal tip for doing that, the tip you have is for cutting flat plate, making parts etc. if you can get a gouging ( sometimes called scarfing) tip or extended electrode tip it will let you get tighter into the corners of parts like the bracket so the arc can heat and wipe the metal way closer to the base (welds at frame ). Not all machines offer interchangeable tips but if they do it is a game changer and well worth looking into. If you are running max amperage (or two layers) it is also helpful to knock the paint/undercoating off the welds with a needle gun. It will give you that little extra cutting depth, esp when you are running your machine at its max and it will save wear and tear on your tips blowing out the sides. The next tip is a freebee that can save your electrical and fuel/brake lines. Any time you are cutting/welding on metal that is in contact with anything plastic a good tip is to wrap and or stuff soaked cotton rags (old teeshirts) around all the lines. Keep a spray bottle handy and every once in a while in between cutting or welding just give the rags a quick squirt. The dampness of the rag will isolate the heat and keep the plastic/rubber lines from melting, unlike the leather glove the water will instantly vaporize when a spark hits and create steam that repels the hot sparks and keeps them from sticking to the fabric...Leidenfrost effect or some similar ( sometimes you still need to cover with a glove or such for direct spatter). Stuffing wet rags between the body and frame rails and wrapping the frame rails will also help cool the frame and isolate the heat. This trick can be handy to control burn damage in areas where you want to minimize paint or undercoating damage from heat spread.

Cooling off the welds with the air nozzle can make it crack. And when metal is force cooled it becomes more brittle. Just an fyi for later.

@@AdventureBuilt you’re cooling the steel faster than it wants to, something will have to give. It’s better to leave the area hot because it will be easier to strike an arc on a hot piece of steel and the weld will come out cleaner with a hotter puddle, more contaminants will burn off. It’s just better to let the steel cool down on its own.

Question: I'm not seeing a reason, other than aesthetics, to "cap" the body mount chop. Structurally I can't see the body flexing enough to cause significant deformation. Thoughts?
@AdventureBuilt

I would have to assume that capping the chop will add a lot more structure and rigidity to the mount. I doubt it would fail but over a long enough life, you never know.

I honestly could not tell you with any certainty but I don’t think it does. I call it rapid cooling but it’s just compressed air from the ambient room temp. I could see if you had cooled air that might micro-fracture the weld. If anyone knows better please let me know. I have used this method stitching sheet metal and never had any issues.

How long would you say the relocate takes compared to just cutting the stock mount and welding on a plate?
@AdventureBuilt
@AdventureBuilt 4 жыл бұрын
The relocation took me around 10 hours with video so maybe 8 hours without. The cab mount chop I did on Trevor’s 4Runner took me 7 hours with video so maybe 5 without. They are both lengthy but the relocation gives you way more clearance. If you are going to run 35” tires I would do the relocation. If you only ever going to run 33” tires then I would do the chop. Good luck.

They make a tip that just scoops out the weld versus cutting the entire bracket. I have had an easier time removing brackets with and angle grinder, plus was able to reuse the bracket if need be. Might have been able to unbolt the whole cab and it an inch to give you more room, I know you can on the earlier gen pickups. All day to do one side...least you did it yourself.
@AdventureBuilt
@AdventureBuilt 4 жыл бұрын
Sheep Dog thank you. What bit are you referring to that scoops out welds, it sounds amazing. The bracket is so big and at a weird angle that I had to use a combo of plasma and cut off wheel. I also did unbolt the body from the frame to create room to work. I was hoping to get it off in 1 piece but obviously that didn’t work. In the end the new bracket went in great and is still super strong. I’m happy with the results.
@SOLDADITO76
@SOLDADITO76 4 жыл бұрын
There is a tip you can buy that replaces the cutting tip. Instead of just blaring through the metal and weld, it is designed to heat up the weld and just blows it off in away. End result it will just get rid of the weld.

There is a reason why we say Toyota stands for Take Off Your Oversized Tires A'hole. If you're going over 33's your doing it wrong. So now you have created a space on top of the body mount that will trap water and rust. We all know the frame issues with Toyotas since 2001. And the body should never be in direct contact with the frame (18:41 in the video). That is the entire reason the bushings are there.
