did the same! I drove the Tacoma and boy does that engine disappoint vs the Ford! I cannot believe people could do with 85+ less ft/lbs of torque down low. The Ranger flies! Plus the Tacoma's transmission and tuning make it super sensitive off the line... was really hard to get a smooth start. Apparently lots of returns because of this.

Had a 2010 taco for 9 years and loved it, very versatile, perfect size for city life, fit all my tools, and towed decently. When the time came to replace it I ended up with a f150 5.0l because of the price inflation of the Toyota. I paid 22 grand brand new for a basis work truck with a manual trans in 2010, now the only way to get a manual was to buy a trd package fo 43 grand. I understand the resale value but the initial cost is insane for a mid sized truck. I miss my taco but am very happy with my f150.

Toyota makes really reliable trucks. People still like old technology and it still works for today, 6 speed trans, rear drum breaks, horrible gas mileage but has great resale value. But, just like all things eventually come to an end. Other trucks might not be as reliable as toyota trucks are or have the resale value. But, other manufacturers like ford, dodge and chevy are changing the game by improving the technology. Toyota just might be left in the dust in the future. So, that being said it's great that a taco trucks holds it's value, because that's all they will have with this generation if they don't eventually plan to change.

My wife and I were in the market for a truck in 2019. We would only consider Ranger and Tacoma (I am a Ford guy but do not dislike Toyota). I test drove the Tacoma TRD Sport Double Cab long bed. First thing I noticed was that it was tough for me to get in and out (6’1” 270lbs). Power was adequate but not great. Rear seat room for my youngest son (11 years old) was tight also. I liked the tech and styling and the fact that you could get a long bed with the crew cab. We then went to test driver Ranger. Easier getting in and out, a little more interior space, more performance, better payload and towing capability. Wound up leasing a Lariat SuperCrew 4x4 for her as a DD. She is happy with it. It is not a perfect truck - no power sliding rear window and no memory seats are killer at the price point for top trim and package. Otherwise, very happy so far. My lease is up in less than five months. I would like a full size truck and again will only consider a Ford or Toyota. I want to buy this time and not lease which has me leaning towards a Tundra. I am simple man and I appreciate the simplicity of the controls and a V8 engine that does not have oil issue like the current F-150. So, it really comes down to wants and needs for each owner just like it has in my family. We agreed the Ranger was the better truck for her. We have not gone looking yet but once we start looking at half ton trucks, we will agree again but this time for what is best for me. I don’t think you can go wrong if you get what you need and want. Drown out the outside noise and do your research and find what is best for you. Good luck

very complimentary comparison. I just traded my 07 Tacoma for a 2021 Tacoma and my main reasons for choosing the Tacoma over the Ranger were Off Road support from Toyota, the Ranger looks like an Escape from the cockpit, the rear seats don't fold down flat and I don't trust a turbo 4 cylinder engine to be trouble free for 243,000 miles, like the Tacoma i traded in.

Interesting how Toyota didn't want to talk about the Tacoma's drum brakes or MPG. Also weird how they say the Ranger needs a bunch of options in order to be halfway decent. Last time I checked, the Tacoma doesn't really start to shine until you get to the TRD Sport package, and at that point, you might as well get the TRD Off-Road package, because the cost is negligible and the benefits are great. And the beloved manual transmission that they're talking about isn't even available on low level trims. The Ranger is a solid competitor if you don't need a manual transmission. The FX4 package has always been a capable off-road package, and you can tack it onto even the entry level trim option.

How exciting, Chad! 🙌 What was it about the Tacoma that initially caught your eye? -Nicole

Two very nice trucks that both have different boasting points. The Ranger beats Tacoma out in overall capability with higher towing and hauling numbers, its also more fuel-efficient, offers a more comfortable ride, better acceleration, better visibility over the hood, a better seating position, and a more capable transmission. It's also worth pointing out that people over 6' tall can comfortably fit in the Ranger, unlike the Tacoma. The Ranger also offers its FX4 and FX2 packages across all three trims, unlike the Tacoma which you have to climb a couple trims to really get into the offroad goodies and doesn't offer 2-wheel drive buyers any offroad goodies at all. Another thing that the video failed to mention is that the Ranger has a fully boxed frame, the Tacoma doesn't. On the flip side, the Tacoma has more standard tech and safety features than the Ranger does, it's also a much more versatile and configurable truck thanks to its generous amount of trims and engine, bed, and cab options. The Tacoma offers buyers the ability to have both a crew cab and a 6' bed at the same time, the Ranger doesn't. The Tacoma also offers a manual transmission, unlike the Ranger. Finally, the Tacoma boasts greater 4x4 offroad stats compared to the Ranger, even if its version of crawl control isn't as smooth and quiet as the Rangers. As for each truck's respective reliability and maintenance costs, both have 3-star predicted reliability ratings and fleets are reporting an average maintenance cost of $3,082 at 60,000 miles for the 2.7L 4x2 Tacoma SR and $3,118 at 60,000 miles for the 2.3L 4x2 Ranger XL. In this respect, both trucks lead the competition as the next closets midsize truck in maintenance costs is the 2.5L 4x2 Nissan Frontier S at $3,760 at 60,000 miles. (It should be noted that, as a general rule of thumb, the more simple a machine is, the more reliable it is likely to be. Fewer moving parts = fewer things to break. Therefore, the most reliable possible configuration for a truck would be a 2-wheel-drive truck with the engine with the least cylinders, and it is in this configuration that the previous trucks were listed. With this in mind, one must take into account that adding such options as 4-wheel-drive and/or a larger engine will likely have corresponding negative effects on reliability and lifetime maintenance costs.) If capability, fuel economy, and comfort are important to you, go with the Ranger. If off-road prowess, configurability, and more standard safety and tech features are important to you, go with the Tacoma. In terms of value, the Tacoma's sweet spot is really somewhere in the middle trims. The base Ranger is cheaper than the base Tacoma and comes right out of the box with a lot of capability, whereas with the Tacoma you have to shell out more cash for the more capable v6. (You can literally get an XLT trim Ranger for the same amount of money as a v6 Tacoma SR) If you configure each truck's respective top trim as equally as possible the Ranger still comes out about 2-grand cheaper. The TRD off-road is probably the best value trim for the Tacoma as it still gets some of-road goodies and is the highest trim that still offers the double-cab + long box option that the Ranger can't match.

i give you props for having a manual but with 5% of new cars with manuals i don't think anyone cares. it does suck to say that but its true.

Australian Toyota Hilux fan here, I didn’t look at who was posting this review and was watching thinking the Ranger was getting roasted then I scrolled up and laughed! Also LOL no turbo diesel, Aussie TD Rule!

Rather have a ranger. Toyota is extremely old interior wise. Plus, The Ecoboost is better than whatever engine is in the Tacoma.
