You made it look so easy, you had helpful suggestions, and it was very thorough! I am thousands of miles away from my first scheduled maintenance (2 years free maintenance here)... but after, I'd love to tackle this oil change and the battery filter you posted too. What a geat video. Simple and well explained. I do some videography for work and something I find helps with any video is a portable LED light panel. You can set it next to the go pro and it just ups the resolution on everything. Just a tip. Loving the content. Just got a 21 highlander and super anal with oil changes. It's hard to get dealer apts these days... So good to know how to do it myself. Thanks again.

Thank you for the kind words. And I appreciate the feedback. I am still learning lol. What people also don’t know is that dealerships often substitute 0-20 for 0-16 oil. So doing it yourself assures it gets the correct oil 👍🏼

Some vids recommend warming up the oil prior to draining it in order for the oil to drain out faster and more completely. Do you recommend that? If so, how would you do that on a Hybrid since it starts out in EV mode? And how long should you have the engine running in gas mode? Also some recommend filling the new oil filter with oil before screwing it on, but how would you do that if it’s installed sideways?
@HandsOnDismantler8 ай бұрын
All great questions, short answers… -warming up the oil/engine is not required. -In an EV the engine wouldn’t start anyways at initial start up. -filling an oil filter before installing is a myth. Your engine does not suddenly become “un-lubricated” because it sat for a day. These oils are designed to lubricate the internals and coat them accordingly. After draining and refilling. It only takes a few seconds for oil to fill the system. During this time no damage will occur. Unless of course you already have a damaged engine. At that point, no amount of oil will fix it. Haha

Thank you! How often should change the oil on your TH Hybrid, I have a 2023 and it wants it changed every 5,000 miles which seems like overkill, especially when there is wear from electric motors 20-30% of the time and it calls for synthetic oil which should double your oil change interval?

You’re welcome. I have a video under my “shorts” showing how to change the 5k mile interval light. As for when to change the oil, you’ll get a different answer every time you ask someone. My recommendation is 7500 miles using synthetic. 👍🏼

I would like to see anything on Hybrid maintenance. We have a 2021 Highlander Hybrid and love it. We have used up the free maintenance visits with the dealer so now I'll take over. I enjoy doing my own stuff and have a lift in my shop at home to get it done. I just need to see someone else do it once. @HandsOnDismantler11 ай бұрын
hello, thank you for the nice comment. In my personal opinion, I would not recommend switching lights or altering the gauge cluster in the hybrid model or any model that does not utilize the mechanical gauges. they more than likely are already LEDs as halogen 194 bulbs are not commonly used in electric modern vehicles. can it be customized? yes I'm sure. but it is beyond my capabilities at the moment. switching bulbs (sometimes even interior lights) to LED can cause issues with the electrical system in ANY vehicle. this applies to modern vehicles.

Do you recommend the oil changes every 5k or 10k? I think it calls for every 10k but I thought I noticed the mileage in this car was at the 5k mark or slightly over that. Thanks fir the video!
@HandsOnDismantler4 жыл бұрын
Hi igor, thanks for reaching out. Their “book” states it can go 10k granted you use full synthetic but me personally, I would never go that long before changing the oil. The mileage you see in the video is correct. This is because Toyota has the “maintenance required” light set to turn on every 5k miles. Now for my personal opinion... I would change the oil every 5k-7500 miles. I would lean more towards 5k- 1. Because I can’t stand lights being on the dash lol and 2. Because the oil viscosity is very thin at 0-16w . Hope this helps!
@Coffeeinthusiast14 жыл бұрын
@@HandsOnDismantler definitely! I was afraid of the same issue how thin the oil’s viscosity is. Thanks again!
@ArisF742 жыл бұрын
I do mine every 5k also.... Nothing wrong with replacing the oil before it gets dirty and has the burnt smell. Btw, if you feel like using a factory oil filter (which I like to do), they are pre greased on the thread and the rubber seal, so no need to smear oil before twisting in. I love those simple things that Toyota engineering comes up with☺️
@SnookerML2 жыл бұрын
I really like this Toyota hybrid master mechanic channel. kzbin.info/www/bejne/pHOlhoSAgLmUn68 Just do 5k. Oil is cheap for a $40-50k vehicle. Toyota oil has more moly in it than the plain Mobil 1. I can get 4.5qts and a filter - both Toyota branded, for $40 and no waiting at dealer or having any issues from junior mechanics getting distracted or bored. It has happened to me before.
@condor56352 жыл бұрын
Great job. If you’re a Costco member I would suggest using the Costco synthetic. It’s an excellent oil and you can get 10 quarts for like 28 to 35 bucks. Might all consider an old plastic jug that holds 5 quarts and mark with your four quarts amount whatever quarts you need. If you use it when you change oil all the time it’s easy just to fill it up to your proper level every time and you don’t have to worry about judging the amount left in a 5 quart jug. Let me know if you’re interested in changing your ATF on your Highlander!

I want to change the oil on my new Highlander Hybrid after the engine break-in period at 1000mi, then have the dealership (through ToyotaCare) change the oil at the recommended regular interval of 10K. Do I need to reset the maintenance when I change the oil at 1K since it would throw off the scheduled maintenance interval for oil change?
@HandsOnDismantler9 ай бұрын
you wouldn't need to reset it, if you did reset it you'd essentially be having Toyota do the oil change at 11k miles. if that makes sense. My personal opinion, don't wait to do oil changes at 10k miles. unless you plan to not keep the vehicle for more than 80-90k miles.
