I want the GT for me, those Sunday morning drives of solitude, finding an old diner an hour or two away, appreciating the power of this beauty. I don't see this as the type of bike that you would tour with a passenger for a week at a time. Triumph is the first manufacturer to truly modernize the class known as "Cruiser". Simply beautiful, but this adventure is mine, and mine alone. I will share other things with my Lady.

Glad you got the chance to ride both. The GT is easier to handle when used as a laid back muscle cruiser at lower speeds. And the R works better when used as a muscle roadster at higher speeds. So it's really all down to riding preference. I preferred the R and I'm looking forward to its arrival!

Got a shot on the GT today, while my TFC was in for a service. The GT has a comfier seat (you notice as soon as you sit on it) and feels like it turns into corners easier, possibly due to the bars. It feels more relaxed with the forward controls' riding position and I can see how it might be outselling the 'R' at present. However, having done 600 miles on the TFC, I prefer the mid control riding position. I'm told that the TFC bars are midway between the R and GT bars, so it's not as radical as the R. It was windy this afternoon and I felt more wind-blast on the GT than I did on my TFC (I do have the optional flyscreen fitted). The riding position of the GT also made it a bit less comfortable to hang on under acceleration, which was probably accentuated by the windy conditions. I think the more forward tilted riding position of the TFC hunches you lower behind the screen and helps you to brace yourself better under strong acceleration. I had wondered whether I would have preferred the GT, but I'm glad I rode it. I definitely prefer the TFC to the GT. Maybe I wouldn't like the Rs bars as much though. Just thought I would share in defence of the mid mounted pegs option.
@funkyfin3023

Thanks Billy. My TFC comes in April. My impression on bars was between the R and GT as well. What screen did you get? I thought of fitting a larger carbon one when available
@MrBillyRR
@MrBillyRR 4 жыл бұрын
@@funkyfin3023 I just took the same Triumph one as is on the GT. It splits the air, so you still get some air to clear your visor, but the strongest force of it goes over your head. I think a carbon one might look a bit dark, the smoked optional one looks really nice on the TFC

A very useful comparison. I was surprised myself but like you would prefer the GT in the end for the more comfortable, relaxed riding position and larger screen of the GT. Less likely to wind up in the lockup for one thing. Shaft drive is beautiful, chain couldn’t handle the torque.

Had my GT for two weeks and love it. Would probably have had a TFC if I had my time again. Been out two up with the other half and she was very happy on the back (she's only 5ft tall) and very thankful for the cissy bar! Another great review thanks. Need to sort my suspension out for two up as did bottom out a couple of times. Also sprayed the inside of my screen with matt plasticote which gives it a nice external black tinted effect. Only disappointment is the 140 mile tank range. The tank looks huge ut I dont think that thing is all fuel underneath!

I've been riding a GS 1150 EF Suzuki for the last 35 years & the last 25 years of riding it my knees are killing me after 20 mins. because of the offset to the rear of center on the foot pegs... Other than that I love the machine for it's ride & handling & it still goes like a raped ape after all these years... I'm 67 years young now & I find these Triumphs extremely attractive & if I can find a dealer in my neck of the woods here in north central Vermont, USA, I'll be taking a closer look at both of these machines, including those saddle bags! I had the good fortune to take the R model for a test ride this morning. What can I say? I love the bloody bike. A 2.5 litre engine sounds intimidating, but in reality, its a baby to handle. Very impressed with the lean angles and the way the bike will hold the corner line perfectly. The weight may be a factor to some riders, but once rolling, its just like my GSX 1400. I'm 6'2, 98 kgs, and it suits me perfectly. My choice would be the GT. Try it out, and you will seriously consider buying it. Thanks Farmer T. Love the channel. Greetings from Oz.

Feet forwards is ok if you’re riding like in the video. But if you want to really use the power, it wants to lift your feet off the pegs. Also these bikes have to be quite stiffly sprung which means if you’ve got no weight on your feet, your spine takes a pounding. I’d stick with the R out of the two, although I actually own the TFC, which I think has similar ergo to the R, maybe the bars are slightly different. Also bear in mind that if you’re leaning forward when it’s stationary, that’s preferable because the wind will be pushing you back when you’re going along. If you’re bolt upright, you’ll have to hang on.
@FarmerTorque
@FarmerTorque 4 жыл бұрын
I could easily go for the R as well and that was my initial preference but just found the laid back character of the bike came through better for me on the GT.I Agree it wouldn't want to be any stiffer, but wasn't too bad for me. Obviously I can't show all my riding on the video, but used both 'enthusiastically' Ultimately there is only so much you can do with a 315 Kilo bike. All the best , Farmer

@FarmerTorque

Easy questions please Bill 🤔! Well I guess the easy answer is I’d choose the Duke - because that’s what I did ! I could chat about you questions for ages regarding the pros and cons of both Maybe there’s a vid ??? Probably key for me is the weight. The orange 🍊 corner is 95 kilos less than the rocket 🚀 . Through twisty bends, under braking and yes, acceleration the Duke is on a different planet. The KTM makes me feel younger every time I look at it. Bill Meyer i was about to ask the same question.... but comparing the Rocket /// with the Super Duke GT. Both bikes are not even in same category, i know, but I’m really torn between them both. I would ride it in the Alps mostly (I’m Austrian, living on the boarder to Italy) so logically the SD-GT would be the far better choice I assume. But looking at the R3, it’s just like🤤. I have a feeling that’s timeless future classic ride while the SD-GT has it’s focus on performance. Some talk me out of the Rocket R please! Lol

Tip Top review, Farmer. There has been a lack of solid reviews of this machine, for reasons I know not. I am torn between my head (and accountant) looking at a motor guzzi 850TT adventure ( I just like it, warts and all), and my heart tugging me toward the Rocket 3. ( Even if I only had it for a summer of fun) That's if I can get one, I have heard the demand is high, already. I would think crash bars are a must, though, as if the worst came to the worst, dropping such a heavy weight would put a fair ding in expensive parts.
@FarmerTorque

Bars wouldn't be a bad idea - not too big though! However, I think the Guzzi is full on heart choice - the fact that your thinking that suggests to me that's the route for you - Win - Win I reckon.Go for it ;)

yes crash bars should be a must on all big bikes (Harley, Indian, BMW) because really they do protect your legs in the first place and the mecanics second (and they are not cheap) ... plus you can use the crash bars to put a bigger horn on it, special LED lights and forward foot pegs for autobahn !!! was mine ..... kzbin.info/www/bejne/fpqzhKSVi6ifmNU ;-) ;-)

Do the pegs meet the asphalt easily on the GT? Is it significantly more difficult to do so on the R? I would consider the best combination to be a GT with the R's peg position.

Back-to-back comparo, fun and useful. I’d have to at least start with an R, the riding position of the GT is medically out for me, and I don’t care much for the two-tore rear wheel. Might want the GT screen a handlebars with more pullback. The ridiculously priced, beautiful TFC looks like a mix of GT and R components already...the controls are mid, the seat has a backrest first the passenger but I can’t tell if the seat height is GT low or R high. Same on bars & screen, can’t tell if they are GT, R, or TFC specific. The full blackout exhaust in the TFC really appeals to me. The more I look at and think about the R3, the more it reminds me of the Honda Valkyrie Rune of 15-ish years back...total commitment to excess. Googling tells me that a used Rune can be had for about the same price as a new R3, which I thing is pretty amusing. Putting your feet up on the imaginary peg when you’re riding cruisers...do you have similar muscle memory issues when getting on older bikes, the years before shifter, brake, and shift pattern stuff was standardized? I don’t, but know several riders who do.
@FarmerTorque

FarmerTorque FarmerTorque Went Googling, seat heights are 29.5 vs 30.4”. But less than an inch less can make things feel much different, or so some ladies tell me. Most of the TFC pictures I found had a backless seat, so I’m going with the belief the the TFC shares the R ergos. That price, though. But that exhaust! And the carbon fiber! Oh, the price of exclusivity.

I’m deciding between rocket 3 GT and new Honda Goldwing bagger. Both have very good torque. The rocket looks more like a bike should, but very small tank range maybe too small for touring, but it has to be an every day bike too. Honda prob more reliable and has more features for similar price, but it doesn’t give the same grin factor the rocket does. If only the rocket didn’t throw crap all up the back on wet days. it’s a tough decision.

As long as you have short legs. Farmer is short legged to start with so ok with low seat forward controls. You go low seat and mid controls. Better be real short. The GT bars are why tip in is better, simple leverage. Easy enough to put them on the R. I think the forward vs mid control is up to personal preference. But without the ability to stand, and to steer the bike with foot weight, I”d be unhappy after awhile with forward.

You can totally buy the rocket 3 in that configuration. You can buy a GT and change all the accesories to make it positioned like a R, and buy and R and do the opposite. You can even combine the seat of the R with the pegs of the GT and vice-versa.

I don’t mind forward pegs but having ridden sports bikes all my life I tend to prefer the mid mounted pegs (although I know they can be moved on either). I have ordered the heated grips and tyre pressure measuring kit for mine when it’s in for its first service in a month or so. I just fitted a tinted screen and a single seat pillion infill which neatens up the back.
