2020 Tundra first oil change (5000mi instead of 10000mi) visible metal material in filter. I expected there to be some that’s why I wanted to do this earlier than the recommended interval.

i did the exact same thing as you...and saw similar non-magnetic casting shavings. No big deal. That good oil doesnt stop working but mine was dark and dirty looking at 5K and I prefer to not circulate it if I can afford it. Heck 40 years ago using synthetic we used to run it in the newer cars then re-use it in the chevy truck we had...that never died. Thats the part I love and hate about the internet someone always wants to point to an oil analysis. The oil has to LOOK right or it aint right to me. Could care less what the analysts, Toyota or any entity that exists to make a profit.

I have a 2020 I picked up used with 20k on it, I took home and immediately changed oil. I assumed the dealer put whatever in it. I noticed metal in my filter cap. I put a OEM back on it and mobile 1. Hard to say what's normal since all my other oil changes have been the old style filters. You never get to see what's in it. I'll send a sample off next oil change and see what they say. Hopefully it's all good I don't plan to get another truck for a very long time.

2019 SR long wheelbase with 2,000 miles at one year since new. I changed the oil and filter and saw similar particles in filter. I agree that I'm glad to get this swarf out of the engine. Since I'm retired and have plenty of time to do these things I'm not really interested in Toyota care. BTW thanks for the video on the trans cooler and scan gauge. And for posting the code for the PIDs. I programmed the scangauge last night and it works very well. I'm looking for the engine oil temperature PID now. Thank you for sharing this info!

I changed my engine oil at 1000kms on my 2019. There was lots of metal stuck in the filter .. I then changed my differential oils at 20,000 kms . It also had a lot of metal in the oil from breaking in .

Just did my 21 tundra at 5k miles yesterday and had the same thing. My sequoia is a 2020 and I never see this in it. Don't think I checked the first time I did it.

on my 2020 I did an oil filter change at 500 miles when I swapped the cartridge housing over from plastic to the OEM metal version. Fresh filter and 1/2 quart to top it back off after the swap. Any break-in metal hopefully is taken care of with that first filter change. Probably will do the first oil change at 12 months or 7500 miles, whatever comes first.

I might be in trouble lol. I have a silver 2020 tundra as well. I have been pulling a 6200# travel trailer, a pontoon, and an enclosed trailer trailer here and there. I now have 9800 miles and am scheduling my first oil change. Yikes

Recommend 5K miles for OCI if towing frequently.

If u have a Flex Fuel Vehicle as my 2018 Tundra is the oil change recommendation in the owners manual says do it every 5000 miles. My dealer did my first oil change at 3800 miles, they said that was close enough. I have never put ethanol in the truck except what is in regular gas. I have been having my dealer do the free oil changes every 4k. They said I could get up to 5 during the two year free maintenance period.

Only if you use E85 you are supposed to change the oil around 3,000 miles.

2020 Tundra 5.7L 1100 miles Sept21 2020 oil & filter. Minor amount of tiny shiny metal shards in filter element. A small glob of fuzz. A small chunk of carbon. Oil changes have been made stupid, with the loss of the spin-on filter.

There's no way I'd wait 10000 miles to do 1st oil change. I've always done my 1st on every vehicle I've purchase at 1500-2500 miles, then every 5000-7500 thereafter, depending on the engine. Synthetic oils have gotten really good and the best ones can easily last 10000 in a naturally aspirated engine, but I like to waste time and money so I do them more often than necessary haha

I have a 2020 Pro and I'm just at 2,000 miles but I plan on changing the oil every 5,000 miles. I figure I'll do it at 5 and they can do it at 10 and so on. Are you sticking with 0w20 and what oil and filter did you use?

I plan on running mobil 1 when I take over oil changes, since I knew this oil change was only going to go for 5k mi I put Amazon synthetic oil with the factory Toyota filter. I also replaced the oil filter holder with an all aluminum one as I hear a lot of the plastic ones break.

Curious. The metal should stay in the filter correct? I would think a simple oil drain and refill before the 5k should suffice. What do you think? I don’t want to mess with the skid plate or oil filter since I plan on letting the dealer change it from here on out.
@aprecision4013
@aprecision4013 3 жыл бұрын
yes, I think that would be the case. You are removing all of the smaller metal particles then that are being allowed through the filter as well as getting the assembly lube out of your oil. I think that is the main value in doing the oil change early.
