Toyota Tundra Oil Change Step by Step instructions

In this video I will show you every step to change your own oil on your Tundra. I will tell you how you can do it yourself for around $35 all while using premium oil and filter.

The past few times I’ve taken it to my local Toyota dealership and when I went ti do it today all the skid plate was held in by was one bolt that was completely stripped and 3 more were broken off inside the truck. Absolutely unbelievable can’t believe they would let that go at Toyota

Good video, it probably saved me from making a mess in my garage. I had not thought about the fact that this truck holds oil. My old oil drain pan would have overflowed. So I went and bought a new one before I started., The video does not mention removing the skid pad to access the oil drain plug. Which was necessary on my truck. But maybe that is only required on 4 wheel drives

Good job. 6th video on the subject I came to, and you're the only one that did it right. That is, unless others want oil all over them by not using the drain valve. You do not need to remove the skid plate. If you do it's a real pain in the butt to reposition it. Remove the 10 & 12 MM bolts, and just lower its back with its hooks still in the core support. Ensure it's secure for the taske, SHARP edges. You can support the bottom if you like. Get yourself a container with a handle on it to drain the filter. I have a 32 Oz container, works perfect. A 1.1/6" socket on the filter remover makes removing/installing the filter easy.

But I am guessing that they only put it on the 4X4. Mine is a TSS Offroad but not 4WD. Bought it new and no skip plate. Again I really appreciate you Tony. When the Toyota parts mgr sold me the filter he asked if I’d ever done an oil change on my Tundra and I said no but was aware that the filter was different than the old canister type. He said the new kind are usually difficult to remove but to not blame the service tech for over tightening it on the last oil change. He said these cartridge filter bases tighten on their own due to the expansion and contraction of the engine etc. He also advised getting a good wrench. The $10 Auto Zone wrenches are crap he said. So I bought the Motive 2320 like yours and it worked great…but yep, that filter housing was on there good and tight.

Great video. Have a 2021 tundra and honestly it has the worst dipstick for checking the oil level. Readings are all over the damn place. It’s got a kink in the oil tube which throws off readings since it smears coming up. I found the best way to check is letting it sit flat overnight and then checking level. I change my oil every 4K miles haha I only put on about 10k miles a year so o figure I’d change the oil twice a year not bad

Congratulations on choosing the best oil filter cap wrench for this application. Best price on oil is Costco's Kirkland brand. 10 quarts for $25. It is full synthetic. Viewers who have a torque wrench may appreciate the specs. Oil pan drainplug = 40 N•m (30 ft.lbs) Oil filter cap = 25 N•m (18 ft.lbs) Oil filter cap drainbolt = 12.5 N•m (9 ft.lbs.) Half way between the add oil mark and the full mark is more than half a quart. If I'm correct there is 1.8 quarts difference between those marks.

Jack, you have a lot of info for people to use there, but let me help out the readers a little bit. Kirkland full synthetic oil is not even close to being the quality of Mobil 1. Readers, open up your pocket book and buy the good stuff. Kirkland Oil sold by Costco is produced by Warren Distribution which specializes in receiving used motor oils, then filters the used oil to take all contaminants out. The Dollar stores sell most of their products. Mobil 1 is hands down a better brand compared to Kirkland . Jack thank you for your input though.

Going to start doing my own oil changes again …. Even the Toyota deals can’t do oil changes/basic maintenance….so many times I’ve open the hood to find air cleaner not closed correctly or over tightened filters and drain plugs

Yeah, it's terrible. And for me the dealer would be the only other one I would trust. The quick change places will strip your plugs, put helicoils in and so on. Then you get stuck with buying the oil pan. I run a fleet of trucks and we get that all the time from those places. Good call. I am just about to get back under this Tundra next weekend and the Camry and change oil in both. Good hearing from you. Hope to hear from you again in some other videos.

The Toyota filters have tightening specs on the box and it's good to follow them. It's kinda important that the canister be tighter than the smaller plug. If the smaller plug is over tightened, the next time you try to remove it, the canister will come loose first = Not fun.

Coat both o rings with oil for easier removal next time plus coating the smaller ring will help it stick to the canister or buy an adapter to use spin on filters

Thanks I have a 21 tundra and after cutting a oil filter access hole in the skid plate . I drained the oil and I just ordered a fumoto oil valve for the drain plug To better manage the drain into a five gallon jug vs my pan. While the Toyota filter is fine..the amsoil filter element flows oil better From reviews on line yes it is much more expensive.. Master Toyota Mechanic “car care nut” recommends to change the oil every 5000 miles on Toyotas…Toyota recommends a lot of things regarding maintenance intervals that I believe are not in the best interest of the owners..change fluids sooner than later

Great video, however, my 2020 Tundra manual says that halfway between the two dots on the dipstick is full. Top dot indicates half a quart overfull. The engine does consume a small amount of oil as it is zero weight, so probably not a huge deal, but just figured I’d mention it.

I am a new subscriber and love your content and detail. After reading further down in the comments I see yours is a 2WD and can see that you have the smaller engine shield (not skid plate) which you clarified in comments toward the front by the bumper that the plastic tabs on the bumper cover screw into the small engine shield. I have searched over and over and called dealerships on skid plates because my 2017 model 2wd that I bought USED didn't even come with the smaller engine shield that I can see clearly in your video. After finding out the toyota part #514100c030 and entering that into EBAY, I clearly see it is the same small engine shield you have on your truck. (very nice footage ) Does this smaller engine shield cover the oil filter housing and lines in the front of the truck or are they still exposed ? Have you installed a larger skid plate or anything yet? After much research etc... I appreciate your channel and any additional information you have

SOME VERY HELPFUL INFO: *****you do not have to remove the plug to change the oil filter/ just unscrew the housing and have a oil tray under it, its a bit messy but in my case the plug was to tight to remove without a big wrench holding the housing, which I could not do because the previous owner had cut a 6 inch hole into the skid plate and made a ingenious removable cover for easy access.

Very true. If your filter came with the little drain nozzle you can use it when removing the plug and it will be less messy but you are so right. It does not have to be removed. Thanks for the comments bonnyclubber. Really appreciate it!

Thanks for your video’s. I was always reluctant to change my own oil while my vehicle was under warranty. I was worried that if something happened to the engine they would blame me even though I had receipt’s and records. What are your thoughts

Unless they can prove you did someone negligent they would have a very tough time denying a warranty claim. For a while I had the thought that I would have the dealer change the oil (under warranty or not) because if I ever did make any mistake or if there was a defective oil filter or something or for instance the drain plug leaked or something then I was on the hook. And I thought the little extra I was paying them was kind of insurance. Because if they made the mistake they would pay. But, for me it became more about the time to not only drive down there but then sit there. I finally asked myself "what are you doing? You have been changing oil for many years." So, I listened to myself and decided to save the time and money and just get back to doing them myself. Not to mention (to your point in the other video) what are they putting in your engine??? We both know it is something super cheap out of a 55-gallon barrel. Maybe it is up to spec. But, we really don't know. If I pour it out of a bottle I know what's going in. The car I drive we trade off every 1-3 years. But, in the case of this Tundra we will have it for 10+. Anyway, sorry I wrote so much.

full synthetic and double oil volume over a other brand truck means 10k is totally fine. The additive pack also has plenty of buffers to last well over 1 year of humidity cycles. The engineers oci are proven. If you doubt, send out an oil sample for testing. for what it is worth, have a friend with a corolla with only highway miles. he drives about 300 miles per work day. he just had his timing belt let loose. he changes with full synthetic at 15,000 to 20,000 miles. The motor had 670,000 miles on it. The rest of the car is nice enough he is putting a used motor in it.

Hi Ronny. The owners manual calls for 8.5qts. I always put 8 and check it. Typically 8 gets me to full. But, if not you can top it off a bit with the other 1/2 quart.

If you use a high quality filter and good synthetic oil and drive less than 10,000 miles a year, you can definitely change it once a year (unless you tow/haul a lot). Many driveway mechanics go WAY overboard with oil changes.

Amd the Toyota master tech on the Car Care Nut KZbin channel says to change the oil at the first 1,000 miles and then every 5,000 miles or 6 months. Which ever comes first. I'll be using that with our 2021 Tundra we bought yesterday.

But he's still a mechanic who makes his living doing oil changes (and much more, of course) so there's a conflict of interest there. I'm not saying 10,000 mile OCIs always make sense, but for highway cruisers in mild climates, for example, it definitely makes sense. I'm just saying decide based on your actual driving habits, not just an arbitrary desire to do more oil changes "just in case" it might help. It winds up being a waste of natural resources, a waste of money and a waste of time.

i dunno man... lots of views on this, but i run a LOT of short trips... like only a few miles, and i idle frequently, hot/cold like ive seen 30 degree C swings in 48 hours... i go 5k mi / 8k km. that is what the owners manual recommends also

@@666dynomax Agreed. If you do mostly short trips, every 6 months or 5000 mi makes sense. I drive roughly 25000 highway miles per year and I change oil every 8000-9000 mi, 3x per year. Works great for me.

The plastic filter housing with time can crack - amazon sells an oem Toyota housing that's metal for $25 or so a good investment considering how much hot oil will circulate through that part. Also they only used to be metal ... :|

Hi ylastra88. Appreciate the comments. I started putting links in and Amazon removed my account because they said I didn't qualify for some unexplained reason. I am not sure if it is because I didn't have enough subs or if people weren't buying enough from the links. Not sure. Was pretty frustrating though because I was only in their program for about 60 days. They told me I could reapply later. They make it difficult for people that are just starting out. Ugh! The filters you can either get on Amazon or your local auto parts store. The oil is readily available but the best price I have found is Sam's. They seem to put it on sale for $10 off per case every other month.

Not trying to be critical, YOU NEED TO PUT OIL ON BOTH O-RINGS, BEFORE RE INSTALLING, TO LUBE , THEY WILL GET DRY, AND MAKE GETTING HOUSING OFF ALMOST IMPOSSIBLE, the dealership messed mine up, IT TOOK A 1/2 IMPACT TO REMOVE

My 2wd has a skid plate and after the 2nd change I cut a circular hole in it to make access to the filter easier Also use a pvc hose on the plastic filter drain to make it easier to aim into your collection bucket

Got my Tundra from a Ford Dealership and they gave me a complementary oil change and started leaking oil 2 days later….they didnt replace the gasket which caused the drain plug to loosen 🤷‍♂️🤦‍♂️. You want somethin done right you gotta do it yourself

Sometimes that’s just the truth. Similar story here….took my Corvette to a Chevy dealer to get the oil changed and the technician could not figure out why he kept overfilling it with oil. He didn’t know it had 2 drain plugs. So, he wasn’t getting all the oil out. Ugh!

I would tend to agree with both statements. I have run fleets with Fords and Chevrolets. And no offense to either of them or their fans but the build quality and the "heavy duty" build is really in a different league. But, this is a really dumb setup with the oil canister. What size removal tool are you using? Specs say filter is 65mm, but most tools online say 64mm.

Hi Ronny. That goes between the canister and the canister plug. I scratched my head and couldn’t figure that one out at 1st too. It usually is stuck in the canister and because it’s black like the canister it’s hard to see.

Next time take the filter canister drain adapter and the drain spout through the cap of a Gatorade bottle. Make an X-cut with a knife in the Gatorade cap and push the cylindrical drain spout through the cap. Place the cap back on the Gatorade bottle. When it is time to drain residual oil in the canister, push the bottle and cap into the drain port receiver in the canister. The oil drains into the Gatorade bottle and does not squirt all over your hand or splatter into your drain pan. I don't even pull the drain pan over and under the canister. Then you can poor the oil into your recycle jug, where it can be filtered, recycled and sent to China to burn in their power plants to power their factories or maybe recycled and used to lubricate the twin high bypass turbo fan engines in Al Gore's, Leonardo DeCaprio's or Bill Gate's G-5;private jets and personal super yachts.

5K miles is wasting money unless you're off roading or towing all the time. Send a sample into Blackstone laboratories and they will run a full spectrum analysis for $35, and they will prove to you that you can extend drain internals much past 5K.

To each his own. I get what you're saying. I will always do mine at 5k. The difference in the amount of dirt (how dark it gets) between 5k and then pushing it further is pretty significant. And of course this is no scientific but the viscosity appears to be deteriorated too when it's pushed further and this oil has so little viscosity to begin with. I just think it's way too long to go 10k. We will probably keep this truck forever so I'm willing to "waste the money" or in my view "make the investment". Again, I get what you are saying and I respect what you are saying.
