So seems probably main filter capacitor failed and blow and take more current causing fusible resistor break circuit. Seems still repairable. Repaired worse cases.

@@WoOS_Historic_Vlogs Yes, seems only a little, maybe capacitor CA2 started all that, but also main filter capacitor looks melted and transistor, but it can be only a result of main failure. need to clear all that electronic and search for reason of that - where it started. Capacitor CA2 is empty (all burned) and has huge hole on it.

I also had an LED bulb fail, but it didn't smoke or explode, it just suddenly stopped working. I disassembled it and I didn't see anything burnt inside, so I don't know why it failed. kzbin.info/www/bejne/e32Qo6eedttggdk

One of these had an intermittent short circuit in it in my house in the upstairs hallway light. It kept tripping the circuit breaker and because I heard if your compact flourescents have a burnt smell or burnt look,they can cause this problem.

It may be that the actual tubes contain less mercury, but as far as technology is concerned, it's probably the other way around, my grandmother bought one for the window of her little store back in the 80s and it lasted until the mid-2000s.

You should not realy hang a cfl downwards as technology connections explained hot air rises and can heat up the ballast and thus make the ballast fail and the bulb

How is hanging it upside down worse than putting it inside a fixture like a ceiling fan that has 8 or 9 little air holes dotted around the circumference. I see what you mean, it may last slightly longer upright such as in a lamp rather than hung upside down or in a fixture. But unfortunately it reduces the effect of the bulb to point it at the ceiling. I personally would need 2 or 3 times the amount of bulbs if I never used fixtures or bulb sockets that were pointed down. I always preferred incandescent bulbs they never cared quite how hot they got. Led and CFLs, especially the cheap Chinese ones, overheat and short out when you breath warm moist breath on them

a bulb can still die upright, because the heat that the controller makes could still get trapped in there, thus it dies, also i don't know how you would install a light on a ceiling without it facing down.
