This has no dedicated GPS which is a no go for me because you have to depend on mobile service for this thing to work. If you lose mobile service you are screwed. Also I like to make custom routes with via points to force the route to go the way you want to go. You still need a gps in my opinion.
@NothingToProve3 жыл бұрын
It used to be that way but changed around when the first iPhone (smart phone) came out in 2007. Believe me I've tested this app (and others) on my Samsung S9, when I did my Alps trip last summer on my BMW F900XR, almost at every summit I didn't have a network signal but I did have GPS navigation with this app and took pictures and attached the pictures to the route and that is how I made my video series of my Alps trip that I uploaded this last winter for my channel. Also, you can make custom routes and import into phone app via .GPX. and change the route on the fly, just like a Garmin Zumo, I have one of those too. Please read the description and see the links I put in there, this will answer all your questions. Ride safe, Scott

Just bought a 2022 RT. On the demo bike I borrowed neither myself or the dealer could figure out how to get the map into full screen mode like you have at 4:48 in the video. We could do the left 2/3rds or the right 1/3rd but not full. Can you please let me know how that is done. Thanks
@NothingToProve2 жыл бұрын
Answer: take out the destination and then it goes into full map mode automatically. As long as you have a destination, it will give you turn-by-turn directions and full map mode dose not allow for that. The turn by turn takes space, therefore not full map mode. OR go to main screen and push right on the BMW wheel and keep pushing till you reach navigation and select and then it will have the turn by turn in upper right hand corner of the 1/4" navigation screen. take care, Scott

Top review ! Well done. Question: I'm riding with my navigation-phone in the right glove box and then I see a nice scenery of which I want to take a picture with the same phone. Can you describe that process? Something like: "Stop the bike, open the box, take the phone, disconnect the app, take the picture, open the app again, reconnect with the TFT, put the phone back in the box." How easy would that be or do I need a second phone?
@NothingToProve3 жыл бұрын
LOL! just open the camera app and take a picture or within the BMW app and take a picture and attach it to the map, location tag basically. During my Alps trip last summer I had 4 or 5 apps open at the same time with out any problems. I actually had 3 Navigation apps open, this, Sygic and Calimoto. So I could alternate between them, just to see which I like best. Phone is the Samsung S9, work great.
@NothingToProve3 жыл бұрын
Just FYI, I actually had the app open while filming this video (when standing behind the bike) with the same phone that I was using in the navigation portion of the video, I just never exited out of it when I started filming with it. One can try to over think this if one wants to. Just pull the phone out of the glove box or coat pocket and take a picture, then put it back, the navigation app is still open all the time in the background and just swipe to pull it in front, if you want to see it. edit: I can't speak for as to how IPhones work, I've never used one.

Yes, navigation is very nice, if, if you do nit have an Apple iPhone connected to the BMW Connected App. This connection get problems after 30-100km, You habe to stop bike, grap phone out of the box, start map again. BMW tells you and me that its an Apple problem in bluetooth and they work with Apple to resolbe it somewhere in the future. This is the bad side if connecticity, you have problems from foreign components you can not controll. If they do not solve this in the next 3 weeks in need an Android pnone only for navigation
@NothingToProve3 жыл бұрын
Or just get a Gold Wing/Africa Twin! LOL! Cause Honda is the other way around, they only do Apple and not Android. But at least I give credit to BMW for trying to do both operating systems at the same time. BMW is the leader in this area of Bluetooth connectivity and when you are the leader, there will be development problems. Now that I've replaced my Samsung S9 with the Samsung S20FE, I've had no disconnection problems with my BMW900XR at all, now it's one disconnection every 2 to 3 days, instead of 2 to 3 times a day, so it seems that it really depends on the smart phone and what level of android the phone is able to handle too. The reason so many complain about the navigation on this bike is because it is overly complicated and unreliable. I spent a week on this bike, considering it as a replacement for my 2015 RT and decided to keep my current bike, mainly because of the new TFT screen, convoluted menu navigation, and the dependency of the navigation system on my phone. If your phone doesn't support wireless charging or is in a case, it probably won't fit in the compartment designed for it. My 2015 has a Garmin-based Motorrad GPS that works independent of my phone or a cell signal. In my view this bike was designed by engineers who don't ride, or who spend a lot more time on their phone than their bike. Buy a 2014-2020 model used, and save yourself a lot of money and grief.
@NothingToProve2 жыл бұрын
To discredit a whole bike because of one new tech on it, is a mistake without looking at the entire package. Put your Garmin on this bike too, just like on your old bike and you'll love this bike too. No bike is perfect and BMW is a pioneer in this area, is it perfect yet, NO, a long way from it, but it will get better and better over time. There are only 4 other bikes that have this tech, so being the first to market has it's pitfalls but one must look at all the other improvements on this bike too and they are many. My 6 month owner review of this bike will be up on my channel tonight. And I don't even mention map mode on the TFT because the rest of the bike is so good that I didn't have time. Take care & thank you I value owner opinion the most, Scott

@@NothingToProve I bought a 2022 R1250RT, used with just 900 miles on it in February, have put about 5000 miles on it, and I am very happy with the bike...except for the nav system. On hot days the phone compartment gets too hot, even with ventilation, twice my phone shut down due to heat. You can't plug an address into the nav display, you have to pull out your phone. The app essentially takes over your phone in map mode, you can't use it for anything else. There are nice features in the app, like recording your rides, but I would happily give up the bells and whistles for a simple and reliable nav system. Based on comments on line I am not alone, and I hope BMW is getting the message, that improvements will be made to serve exiting owners, and that soon they overhaul this design.

The key test of the adaptive cruise is to see if it will maintain the set speed when rounding a sweeping left hand bend in the interstate when the bike is in the left lane and you are overtaking a vehicle in the right lane. Will the cruise control think you're going to impact the vehicle being overtaken and slow you down, or will it keep your set speed?

Hello dear friend, I’ve seen a lot of videos made by you and I love the work and the analysis you do of the bikes you test. In this case, you tested the sporty version which means that in the standard version the wind protection is even superior to the one here reviewed. It is something precious about this bike. The clutch feels also better compared to other models that use the same engine , feels smoother and I don’t really know it is, but it happens! I think this bike is that kind of vehicle that allows you to go everywhere and almost by every path on road. I saw your video about the BMW 1250RS and at that time didn’t understood your critique about it. But after a while I bought the Yamaha XSR Abarth version and I saw where you came from! Great review, thanks. I picked up my new RT a couple of weeks ago and have been enjoying every minute of riding it. This one is my third RT in succession and I especially love the new, grunty, engine. It really does pull like a freight train as you said. Anyway, even though the map navigation feature works OK and I do get the visual turn to turn instructions on the screen, I can't get the spoken navigation instructions to work, even though I've ticked the pertinent box in nav settings. It should not be a pairing issue because the radio sound comes out just fine thru the helmet Cardo comms and the bike's speakers. Any advice? Also, I have not managed to play my music on either of my phones (one iPhone and the other is Android); I have set their volumes to max, as advised by many. Some people prefer silence when they ride, I love to listen to music. It's funny how many comments on various reviews pooh-pooh the ACC, the TFT ect. I am a former fighter pilot and in my days of flying we used every bit of tech that would help us focus on situational awareness and/or safety. And that's what the new features on this bike, too, are all about. The pilot/rider can choose when or how to use it. If you do not like modern technology, don't buy it. It's that simple.

When the adaptive cruise slows u down does it apply the brake light to tell the vehicle behind u u r slowing down? Great video , I like this approach of u standing by the bike and directing us to your various rides ,autobahn twisted ,etc. beautiful done the way u fade into the nav vs Garmin .

As always, a great review, informative & obviously you enjoyed the bike. It is indeed a beautiful bike but....1) it's a BMW and 2) I'll bet you can't touch one for under $25g's. For that kind of scratch, you can buy a newer, low mileage, used FJR1300 (which will accomplish the same thing as the RT) AND a Z900RS or some similar combination for the same coin. Me? I'd go Japanese anyday over this ride.

Great review. Great sampling hi lo speed and what can I say? I am bias. I own 2 RT’s. In my view (1m 92cm/6’2”) what a commanding view I have; the RT’s are the best sport touring motorcycles ever made

I don't get the point with built-in sat nav. All I need is a good screen and wireless android auto. Waze will do the job much better.

@snorman1911 Жыл бұрын
I've done a lot of miles in cars all over the US with various navis, and without a doubt the most rock solid always works reliable solution is built in navi. Waze is good, for sure. But, signal issues (unable to start route with no signal), battery issues, GPS issues (had many issues with unreliable GPS signal with cell phone), glitchy integration to car, and other sporadic issues that always seem to pop up right when you're in the middle of another crisis, lead me to rely on a self contained dedicated navi.

Hi again thanks for you reply to my query about your Rukka jacket Can’t seem to find it on their site...... Hope you could tell me which one it is..... Your ride reviews are some of the best..... They have a nice flow to follow and then your gone...... I am sharing you with my rider buddies.. Enjoying the ride....
@NothingToProve3 жыл бұрын
Yea, it's an older model, got it over 6 years ago, they are always changing stuff. The name is Rukka Gore-Tex Pro Jacket. It comes with a full zip in thermo liner. Basically it's their cold weather riding jacket, the coldest one that they made at that time & had matching pants too but I really don't wear those unless it's really, really cold, then I'll have the pants on too. Rukka does not make a "bad" jacket, they specialize in cold weather riding, well they are from Finland, so they are used to riding in the cold! But they also cost more than the other brands but the jackets last a long long time. Mines 6 years old and I still love it and have had no problems with it, no zipper problems, no tears/rips...etc. I'm glad you are enjoying my channel and thank you for sharing with your friends, I appreciate it! Ride safe, Scott

Thanks for a good review. I have a R1250GS, I can see from the video that the quick shifter is smoother on your RT above. The RT is a compelling offering! My only beef with it is that it doesn’t look very good with the panniers removed. I like to be able to filter (Lane split) and I think the R1250 GS with (removable) vario panniers is easier to slip through traffic queues.
@NothingToProve3 жыл бұрын
Agreed! That's why I said I'd buy the GS if they put this TFT on the 1250GS. I just don't like side cases on all the time and when they are off, this bike kind of looks naked. Now if it was female, then that might not be such a bad idea... 🤣🤣🤣🤣
@maxflight7773 жыл бұрын
@@NothingToProve looking forward to your next video.
@fingerhorn43 жыл бұрын
If the front can fit between other vehicles, so will the panniers, because they are narrower than the fairing and mirrors. So forget the panniers. If you can filter the front end, the back end will get through also.

Just bought a 2022 RT and looking install a tom tom so I can use full dash screen and only use built in Navigation incase if emergency. Wish there was a you tube on finding and hooking up to auxiliary sockets, which are hidden somewhere in the bike.

Agreed, I'd watch that video! Maybe I'll make one down the road but it'd be easier if there was on e already out there 🤷♂️ take care, Scott

@@NothingToProve picking up my RT on Friday, going to fit a Wunderlich bracket to above the TFT screen. Will use for my phone or my Tom tom. I like the full TFT and will only use BMW nav on emergency. But where the hell is the auxillary connection. I'm Scottish difficult to get lost here, so nav not a priority.

On the fence between this and the GS.The RT looks worlds better than the GS imo.The weight is a non issue for me coming off of a Harley touring which is a tank,and much heavier than this.Great review as always.Thanks Scott!👍👍✌
@Surfbird113 жыл бұрын
Both are great road bikes. If you plan to stay on pavement the RT is probably a better choice. If you plan to go beyond the highways realize that much of the world is unpaved and the GS is worlds better there!

Hey! Another great video. I picked up a F900r thanks for the thoughts you gave me on it. As you are in Germany what's your opinion on Cobra exhaust vs bmw recommending akaprovic. Are they better than aka?
@NothingToProve3 жыл бұрын
Thank you. Exhausts are really a matter of personal preference, sound, look, price. Kind of like which brand of tires an OEM puts on a bike/car but then it's more about politics and the bottom line and that is probably why Akrapovic is on BMWs from the factory. I personally do not think one is better than the other. 😎

Thanks for the great review! I really like this bike, but can you recommend it as the first bike for a beginner who dreams of a touring bike with great wind protection?
@NothingToProve3 жыл бұрын
I would never recommend a big bike as a first bike to learn the basic riding skills. Smaller bikes are easier to learn on and highlight the lack of skills, where as bigger bikes tend to hid the lack of skills and one will (usually) never learn basic emergency maneuvering on a big bike and one day when they need that skill that was never developed, they become a static. Start out on a middleweight bike, this is a heavyweight at 279 kg, 615 lbs. There are some middleweight bikes with good wind protection, BMW F900XR, 750GS...etc, Yamaha Tracer 900, Kawasaki Versys 650 & Ninja SX, V-Strom 650, Honda CB650F, Ninja650, the list goes on and on, just depends on your budget and brand you want. At 15' 05'' you ask BMW to add the TFT to the 1250GS. They won't, as you go on to say, because I guess they'll save it for the 1300GS that is due next year.
