This tutorial will work for the 2019 and newer BMW X5 and X7 Premium Trim level (Heads Up Display Function)
This is a somewhat complicated setup procedure as there are more steps here than other CarPlay systems. Once setup though I must say that the BMW CarPlay is one of the best on the market. It has such a beautiful integration and even shows some media data on the heads up display!!

I'm very thankful for this video!!! I rented this car and after spending about 15 minutes in an airport rental lot I gave up before driving off. How embarrassing for BMW to not have plug and play like every other manufacture - subscription needed or not...I don't think I will ever own another brand than MB at this point.

Not sure where these prices came from, I added CarPlay for 200 on a 2017 3 series downloaded from BMW. No annual fee, and it worked as soon as it was downloaded

I'm surprised they are charging for carplay. I understand buying it as an option, but having to pay for it every year is crazy. No other auto manufacturer does that. Even cheap Fiats offer it without having to pay every year (once you pay for it upfront as an option). Carplay is awesome though.

I have a 2019 X5. If there is one thing that annoys me with BMW, it's the difficulty in trying to understand and operate its technology. I doubt I use 50% of it and the dealer isn't always able to help! Can you add apps from CarPlay..I'm thinking like email? - so that you could open them onscreen? Or how do I get email in the car, as I have in my 530 Touring?

Two questions. Can you get Apple Maps turn directions on the HUD ? What is the battery drain like on your phone when navigating with apple maps and playing podcasts/music at the same time ? Assuming you have not put it on a wireless charge pad.

From my research the only thing from carplay that can come up on the hud is media information. I wasn’t using the charge pad and I didn’t notice any huge drain but again I only was using the system for 20 minutes or so. For anything longer than a 20 minute ride I would have the phone plugged in or on the charge pad. 👍

I just bought this vehicle approximately five months ago. I definitely get a lot of compliments on its look and polished interior. However, I do find the interface to be very complicated as it can involve quite a bit of interaction while driving the car. I feel like a pilot at times. My car play frequently disconnects after a day of driving around town. Which brings to the question, do I need to set up car play each time I start a new trip for a new day? By setting up, I mean sending a new code to my cell and going through all those steps to link it. If so, what an ordeal!

Kimberly Butler that should definitely not be the case! It should connect automatically every time you get in! I would try deleting the phone from the car and doing the procedure over again or have someone at your local dealership help you in person 👍

Update: BMW issued software updates for this vehicle. I brought my car in for the update and it’s working brilliantly now! However, I still put forth that there is way too much interaction with the interface; taking the eyes off the road is no bueno.

My wife and I are having constant trouble in our X3 with CarPlay. It disconnects constantly and now that I have deleted her phone in the car and the car from her phone Apple car play isn’t even an option when connecting a new device. Have you experienced this issue?

Rick Howell are you making sure you keep both Bluetooth and WiFi on before restarting the vehicle? Also make sure inside your iPhone settings you have allowed while iPhone is locked turned on. If both of these are on and it’s still not connecting then I would maybe try doing the pairing process again. Hope this helps.

They do not let any video source come through on the normal Apple Carplay software.

You have to jailbreak your phone. Then download CarBridge application. You can screen mirror your phone as well!

Why on earth would BMW charge you for something that is free? CarPlay the app itself has been adopted by most car manufacturers to enhance the car's infotainment system. Even the feature of it being wireless should be free as bluetooth and wireless are technologies that have been around for a very long time. I don't understand what your paying for.. with this service. I just purchased a Honda CRV 2020 and It came with CarPlay as part of the infotainment system... no extra charge... it is only available however in the high trim levels.
