Not with diesel costing SO much that, in one state, a trucking company went bankrupt after being robbed so many times for their diesel. The thieves kept breaking through the fence and drilled holes in the tanks, stealing thousands and thousands of dollars of fuel. Right now, it makes no sense to buy diesel. The steep price per gallon pretty much cancels out all the mileage advantage.

That's more important." I have my family (ages 1, 3, 11, Honey the dog) and we road trip a lot. I want to take my family out as much as I can. The diesel will serve us well. The reason I want this is not because of the $700ish saving mentioned @ 9:00, but the 1000km+ range making it one of the longest range vehicle selling right now. The time saving at fuel pumps is likely to make up for the lost passing power.
@slscamg3 жыл бұрын
You bring up the point always bring up when companies try and stuff economy engine options into these 100k+ trucks. $700 is nothing to someone who can afford this truck. And they probably want the sound track of the V8. And because more and more people are going to lease these, you would have to calculate fuel savings on a monthly basis based on the different lease price. If these diesels have lower residuals, they could actually be more expensive to operate them on a monthly basis. This engine is just for people like me who appreciate how diesel engine delivers power and loves that you could travel all day long on the same tank of fuel.

Very useful review. Well done. I am hoping you can answer or clarify a diesel question or two for me: Where, in what circumstances, will that lower 277 hp of the diesel engine show relevant trade-offs, even though it still has the higher 460 torque that apparently kicks in at a lower 1500 rpm's? I ask because I've seen a number of reviews where they seem to say that off a start such as at a light, or in town driving, or merging onto a highway, at such lower speeds the diesel does quite well. I actually watched various zero to 60 or slightly longer races of different pickups using this new diesel, the 6.2 liter and the 5.3 liter gas powered gm engines. And in every case, off the start, the diesel pulled out more quickly, and largely maintained that lead against the 5.3 liter, at least for the short race that this was, but the 6.2 liter, after taking a few moments to catch up, more than a few, it then passed and said bye bye and never looked back. But still, good performance of the diesel at low speeds and off a start, and working up thru the transmission speeds fairly quickly. Though I am aware those were pickup trucks that do not weigh as much as the 6k+ lbs Escalade. In any case, I keep wondering that there has to be a trade-off evident at some point with that lower hp. So, given that I live in mountainy ski country out west, where steep hilly highways are common, like in Colorado and Utah, I wonder if maybe once the diesel Escalade is going say 70 mph, if it wants to pass another vehicle on a steep highway hill, if it will even be able to. Though it does occur to me that maybe, if we're lucky, in that circumstance, that ten speed transmission might seek out a lower level and thus kick in the torque making the passing possible and maybe even acceptable. I have been unable to find any Escalade to test drive, much less the diesel, so I ask you or other posters here for your thoughts on this issue. Maybe you know or can find the answers, or even give other examples of pros and cons. Thanks so much, for any reply if you can take the time, and for a great review. I am laughing because your point about whether a $700 savings is worth switching from the 6.2 liter to the diesel. It's a good point, especially factoring in the generally higher cost of diesel fuel, and the smaller blue liquid costs. That said, you used 15k miles for your example. I could easily see myself driving 20k-30k miles in a year. And though a lot would be on highways, level and hilly, there would still be a good bunch of in town and neighborhood driving in the mountain towns I frequent so often, and a good deal of less well maintained secondary roads. And of course all the driving I do in bad winter weather (the best days to go skiing), from minutes to the nearby area, to an hour or so of highway driving to day trip areas, to 4-7 hours for long weekends trips to more distant ski areas, often in bad weather. Sorry for the novel, but I would welcome any insights into the Escalade on any of these points, but especially the diesel issue. Thank you.

As a long time Cadillac buyer, I've always loved Escalades although my PhD hooded wife with an environmental sustainability degree always banned them from the shopping list because of their carbon footprint. But even she admitted on our last family road trip that my 2nd gen SRX was too small for a family of oversized adults/teens. On the other hand, the family trip before that in 2019 with a rented Tahoe at Yellowstone National Park was perfect. Which brings me to the difference between the gas and diesel versions. The diesel buys you some economy, yes. But the big difference is the range which amounts to fewer stops on that long trip. Combine that with SuperCruise (which wasn't on the Options Game (tm) this week), you could go longer and better rested than with the gas version. And then there is electrification. Cadillac has already said that there will be an electric Escalade sooner rather than later and both cars will be available simultaneously for a while. I doubt we'll see any more hybrid tech from GM since that doesn't seem to be in their long term cards, even though that Cadillac has plenty of experience with the 2014-2016 ELR and the Escalade Hybrid from a decade ago. As for your other comment of Cadillac going with cheaper materials below the belt line.....this is sadly an old problem and other reviewers have even noticed it in the third row of this car. Back when I bought my 2003 CTS new, I showed the dealer how Cadillac still needed to improve interior quality because everything below the belt line was visually cheaper than the easily visible stuff. Hopefully the upcoming Lyriq and Celestiq move away from this bean counter mentality.

It is next to impossible to make this Escalade a plug-in hybrid that could to go 100 miles on battery electric only. Imagine, the Volvo XC90 T8 can only go about 18 miles on electric only. To keep the vehicle still practical for what it is, which is an SUV with SPACE, it can't fit that many battery packs in it. Plus, that many battery packs would add probably another 1000 lbs to the already 6000 lbs vehicle, then everything dynamically-speaking has to change again. On the other hand, the idea to make it a plug-in hybrid is good, but maybe just keep the wish to a 20-mile electric only range.

I wouldn't want the extra complexity of a hybrid/electric system. These are great compared to many euro options due to better reliability and most importantly much lower repair costs. A hybrid or electric vehicle system would ruin what makes it better.

Wow this is sooooo huge to my eyes. This little dinosaur can only live in its natural habitat - which is in the US. You could not drive it around here in europe, no parking place would fit. But hey if its designed for signer and song writer it's for sure perfect. - if it's a review here I watch it :) Wish list: try a 2/3 rd model for here

Back in my UK days, a fair amount of 'footballers' would buy grey market Escalades and drive them all over London.

By your logic then the automotive industry shouldn't have been able to call itself profitable when they were making money off the financing of the cars rather than the actual sale the car itself. This is why casual shouldn't talk about financial statements, it gets very annoying.

Excellent review man. But I could not even imagine taking this huge Chevy over a Mercedes Benz GLS or a BMW X7.

Spend some time in all three . . . more than a day . . . and you will see. A bit behind the scenes. While this car was here, also had the 2021 Mercedes AMG GLS 63 . . . yes, that flavor is on a different mission for the GLS and costs 50% more than this, but the execution of some of the tech as well as the personality of the Escalade jump out at you immediately . . . so much so, even a Porsche freak like me can see why so many people drive these things.

After owning a 2011 BMW X5 diesel, I wouldn’t ever touch a diesel vehicle - ever. That car was a total piece of sh!t. I don’t know if it was because it was a BMW or a diesel or both.

What were some of the problems you experienced..
@SBha303 жыл бұрын
@@AMEX4Life Had numerous problems with the diesel emissions system. The entire diesel exhaust filter had to be replaced at 53K miles. The DEF temperature sensor also failed but the entire DEF tank had to be replaced because the sensor is integrated with the tank as one unit. A few sensors related to the fuel injection system failed. The BWM technicial gave up trying to fix my car and told me to sell it to Carmax asap - lol! Every time the check engine light went on, I automatically assumed that I would be billed $2K. I actually felt good if the repairs were around $1.5K. It was the worst car I ever owned and will never buy a BMW again. I was warned so many time not to buy a BMW but I didn't listen.
@AMEX4Life3 жыл бұрын
Thank you for the information. Do you have any knowledge on twin turbo engines reliability? I'm in a cross between the 6.2l Escalade and the AMG GLS 63. I'm concerned about the long term reliability with twin turbos..

The only issue I have with the 4 and 6 cylinder Duramax is that they’re actually a subsidiary of Fiat aka Fiat diesel division... Junk Maintenance costs on any diesel is far more expensive than a gas engine it’s not a even close to a $700 savings, more like $400 in savings.
@rlhmarines3 жыл бұрын
This NOT by any means even remotely affiliated with Fiat....GM designed in-house at what was its Italy Powertrain division in Turin before it was sold last year.
