The new 2021 Canyon Spectral trail bike has seen a complete refresh, with the German direct-sales brand introducing four ground-up designed carbon 29er mountain bikes to its range.
The Spectral is Canyon’s do-it-all bike, and this iteration of the bike sees rear wheel travel set at 150mm and front travel at 150mm or 160mm, depending on the build option you choose. The model Tom is testing is the slightly burlier 160mm bike.
While the bike has seen a complete redesign, it’s not to say that the bike is a complete departure from old. Canyon felt it necessary to retain the agile and poppy feel of the previous version of the bike - ultimately trail bikes are about having fun on, right? It’s worth noting that the previous generation 27.5in Canyon Spectral will remain in the line-up, in both alloy and carbon flavours, with updated 2021 specs too.
But will the updated geometry be a welcomed change? And can a 29er still feel fun to ride? Find out all you need to know about the new bike and Tom's early impressions on the 2021 Canyon Spectral.
What do you think about the new model? Would you be getting the 29er? As always, let us know what you think in the comments!

I am currently trying to decide between the two and I have yet to find a proper comparison and they are priced very similar, but with the Strive having slightly more high end spec for the same price. There should be a reason the Canyon EWS riders are still on the Strive also - and I refuse to believe it is because it slower or harder to pedal. Also there is this article written by what I presume to be people with first hand experience stating that the Spectral is plusher, bigger, simpler and less efficient overall than the Strive: flowmountainbike.com/tests/2021-canyon-spectral-29-cf-8-0-review/ I therefore struggle to see any reason to choose the Spectral over the Strive, other then that it is very "now"..

I don't understand why RockShox equipped spectrals (in both 27.5 and 29) have become the "loser" version of the fox equipped spectral... 150mm fork instead of 160 (a RockShox Lyrik would suit this bike much better than the pike) and a non-piggyback shock... also the fox models cost more so if I want I more capable bike for going down I need to spend more... ? this makes absolutely NO SENSE. if they REALLY wanted to offer two versions (to me it looks very unnecessary) why not offer them in both RockShox and fox builds? I am in the 3000€ price range and I would have liked to buy a spectral but the cf7 with the non-piggyback shock and 150mm pike really isn't for me. Guess I'll keep my crappy XC hardtail for some more time hoping they change something in the 2022 lineup

Some of the best reviews in the industry, Tom is not just thorough with the details, he's great with context and comparison. I bought a 2018 Spectral CF 9 with 27.5" wheels largely based on one of his earlier reviews, then upgraded to a 2019 Strive 9.0 adding Black Label wheels and an Industry 9 hub which I absolutely love. I felt the Strive was more suited to bigger jumps and drops, but still has some of a trail bike feel. I'm happy with my Strive 9.0, it's a really capable ride, but I would love to hear more about it compares to this new Spectral? @@mistatopo8337 Thanks, appreciate your comment! I've not ridden the current Strive very much, however I reckon the new spectral should be fairly happy hitting those bigger features. it definitely has a fairly trail-bike feel - it's efficient, in its early stroke it doesn't overly hug the ground like some true enduro bikes do. however, its very smooth in its progression at the end of its travel - i've not had any harsh bottom outs, nor felt that my ankles were about to be blown off the pedals. I think the geo is excellent, and the 2021 36 is a brilliant fork. add in decent tyres and wheels, and I reckon if i were to spend my own cash on a bike, the 160mm 8.0 (or LTD) would be well up there on my list.

Still confused.. I am in between the Strive and the Spectral but really want to see a head to head comparison! Everything I can find says that this does not replace the Strive since it is slower downhill, has less travel, not as nimble and has a less efficient pedaling platform since it does not have the shapeshifter, so it is also slower uphill - but it costs more?? Only thing I can find is better is the threaded inserts and easier to service maybe and that it is plusher and more forgiving - which in my mind says less fun.. Oh! And you cannot fit a fullsize bottle.. but the seat angle is steeper so you are a little more comfortable going uphill since you don´t have to lean your weight as much forward, but it still requires more energy going uphill so you will be more exhausted though.. So why pay more for less to get the Spectral??

460mm seat tube on a large sounds good. But compare that to Ibis, Santa Cruz, Yeti and Specialized its to long still! Ibis Ripmo has a 430mmm, the 21 stumpy evo in a S6 size has a 438mm. I agree to a certain extent - i struggled with the seat tube on the previous generation (i have fairly short legs I think), however on this one, with a 170mm post, it's not quite slammed yet. personally, i'm not fussed about 200mm droppers, but if one was, I agree that they could have gone a touch shorter. That said, if they lopped a bit off the top of the seat tube, it might then mean that those longer droppers might interfere with the kink in the seat tube.

i had the 2021 jeffsy and had to sell it. getting this one next. the jeffsy was good bike, very light but there were a few things i hated it on it. the battle cage is proprietary and hard to reach. the magnet cage is a joke. very hard to take in and out. the cable inserts rubber plugs are always out of place. I have to continuously keep adjusting. Needless to say the components are some of the best but the little things drove me away specially the water bottle. I had the silver and the color was not my favorite either. other than that the bike was phenomenal. i am a big SRAM fan and that bike had it all. Shimano brakes have little to no modulation on them. I wish this bike had fox/sram combination.

I have 2 questions, that hanging in the air: 1) cf7 version with the same specs 27.5 weight 300 grams less, dispite that the new frame is 300 lighter. So 600gr for the wheels. 2) 300 again: it’s the different in price with 27.5 version. Is direct sale companies still worth it?

I've not had a chance to strip the frame, however I was told by numerous people at Canyon that they were fully guided through. As for rattle, I had a tiny bit on at the start of my ride, however I loosened the bolted entry/exit guide, pulled the hose tight, and had no further issues.

I'd be happy racing an enduro on it, sure. however in testing i rode it back to back with a Vitus Sommet, and the two bikes are very different. The sommet really hugs the ground, buckets of grip, very very smooth, but a bit of a slugger up hill. The spectral is zippier, more efficient, a little stiffer in its suspension etc - as such, I'd happily take the spectral on long, pedally rides, whereas I'd take the sommet on steeper, gnarlier rides. if that makes sense?

I’m enjoying the bike so far kzbin.infoUgkxMesz3KOGEmwmvyKQfLfrRSUXLFzfVHZA My only real complaints are the brakes and the pedals. I feel like a bike designed for bigger people should have much larger pedals and more heavy duty brakes. I’ve only gotten two really good rides out of it, minimal downhill action, and the brakes feel like they’re already going out. A larger person has more momentum, so I think this wasn’t thought through very well. Also, I wear size 13-14 wide shoes. My feet cramp up on these pedals that are clearly made for smaller feet. Since I’m not a pro rider (and I don’t think many are who purchase this bike) I don’t think that the straps on the pedal are necessary at all. None of this takes away from the enjoyment I get from riding, however. I’ll just head to a bike shop to improve on a few things.

The changes are great-ish/nice (I have a 2020 CF7/27.5) but wouldn't it have just been easier/faster-to-market to just leverage the current frame like some of their competitors and just have a 'switch' to flip between 29 and 27.5? (e.g. Fezzari Abajo/Delano Peaks...). So now I have to have two bikes ($4k each for the CFs after CA tax including out-of-state orders) instead of one with another wheelset (at < $1k)? Evidently they are not going to have 29/27.5 backward compatibility with the new one (frame) either as they would have built that into the design. Also, not having an AL version (again, like other brands) available or even announced... Love my bike, not impressed with Canyon's business strategy - probably too distracted with the buyout/sellout activities.(www.pinkbike.com/news/private-equity-firms-look-to-buy-canyon-sale-could-bring-in-592-million.html)
