See, now this, to me, is art. It's the meticulous way you measure and fit your segments, the way you precisely apply the glue to both sides of the joints and your precision in turning until everything fits just right. Close enough is not good enough, it must be perfect and that is what you have achieved with this beautiful clock, Gord. I'm astounded! It's just beautiful in it's seemingly simple design but your viewers know better. It took pure craftsmanship and you were up to the task. Very nice, my friend! A great way to start the new year! Phil

Fantastic Gord! The clock is so elegant, so beautiful. I deliberately didn't watch the early challengers' videos until after I completed my project, but I wish I had seen yours. In particular the hot gluing of the ring onto scrap wood to make turning easier and to use the remounting jaws as a safety catching device when dismounting the hot glued ring (you can tell I'm a novice!); could have saved me a lot of time and headaches had I seen this sooner! Oh well, a little wiser. Thanks for the video. All the best. Ray

I'm glad you liked it, Ray. There are so many ways to do everything in woodworking/woodturning and I like to try to show different methods rather than the same way every time. Gord -- I really like the clock and enjoyed the video. Would you mind sharing where you got the clock kit? A thought: When you turned the recess and were test fitting the clock face, you noticed that the recess wasn't deep enough for the clock movement, I asked myself how to solve the problem. You came up with an different solution -- one which obviously worked well. Here's my solution: take three small wooden blocks, about the same size as one of your segments. Cut a v-notch into the side of one of them and glue it to the back of the clock, with the V turned upside down and centered over the 12:00 position. (The V is for hanging the clock from a nail on the wall.) Glue the other two blocks at the 4:00 and 8:00 positions. That would move the clock out from the wall, providing room for the movement, giving it a nice shadow line, and a little more prominence. The face of the clock would still be recessed about 3/8", giving a stronger shadow line and, perhaps, more visual interest. I'm NOT suggesting you make another frame to put my idea to the test! I would like your thoughts and hope that one or more of your viewers might benefit from the exchange.
@GordonRock14 жыл бұрын
David, I got the clock kit from Lee Valley. I think your v-block idea is a good one. I will leave it to you to try it out. I have another clock kit but very rarely revisit a project so it will be used for a different design someday. Thanks for watching, David! Have a very Happy New Year!

Beautiful clock. Good luck in the contest. Did you consider 60 segments? One for each tick of the clock. Also, a tip for all segmenters, if you need extra setup time with glue, put Titebond III in a bucket of ice water. I was taking a class from Malcolm Tibbetts, the premier segmented turned in my opinion, and a student needed to do a complex glue up in one step. Malcolm had him put the TB3 in ice water and they successfully did the glue up.

That's a beautiful clock, Gord. The chatoyance on the walnut is really nice. I'm sure it will look good anywhere you hang it. Apparently you didn't hear me yelling about the movement. I guess it's too far from Ohio to your part of Canada for my voice to carry. Here's another couple of ideas for future clocks. Make every other walnut segment a different, darker wood and those can be your hour markers. you could then just make a wooden plate for the face. The other is to make it a 24 segment ring and the walnut can be the hour markers. Happy New Year to you and Gayle. Bill

Beautiful clock, Gord. Next year, maybe a 60 segment clock with alternating woods for the minutes, a third wood for the hours, and a forth for 3,6,9, and 12? Then you won't need a clock face, just the movement and hands. You could inlay a larger segment into the outer portion of the ring, if you chose, to make the quarter hours more prominent, or carve the 3,6,9,12 into the face, but that's up to artistic interpretation, I suppose. Happy New Year!
@GordonRock14 жыл бұрын
60 segments? Wow, Thomas, that would mean either very narrow segments or a very large clock! Thanks for the ideas. I appreciate them as I always like to have more ideas to think about. Thanks for watching, Thomas! Happy New Year to you and yours!
@thomasarussellsr4 жыл бұрын
@@GordonRock1 yup, that would be what, 6° segments? The question of course is, just the outer ring, or pie pieces all the way to the center? Maybe multiple rings? A 12 ring center wedges set into a 24 ring set into the 60 ring dial, then a 12 segment outer ring for the hours? Each ring set into the larger one like layers? There are just so many artistic possibilities, and so many woods to choose from. I just may have to make clocks for Christmas gifts for next year.

Love the clock. Trying to learn to do segments. Can you tell me what angle you used to cut 64 pieces.
@GordonRock14 жыл бұрын
Hi Jean, To calculate the angle use the following formula: 360 (degrees in a circle) ÷ 64 (number of segments) ÷ 2 360÷64÷2=2.8125° If you want a more thorough explanation I believe this is all covered in Part 1 of a 9 episode series I did called "Making A Segmented Vessel With Diamond Feature Ring". I must warn you that it was one of the very early videos I did and I hadn't worked out the audio side of things. The music is very repetitive and a bit too loud. However, it does cover everything you need to know about making a segmented vessel. Also, I no longer use the miter saw and sanding disc jig to cut my segments. I hope this is of some help to you, Jean! Thanks for watching! Happy turning, .....Gord

Gord, great vid on solutions to problems with wedge sled. I wanted to show you my ball and socket experiment, but being iPad lgnorant I didn’t send pics as stated. How can I send them now without your email address?
@GordonRock13 жыл бұрын
Hi Ernest, The way I send large files is to upload them to Dropbox and send a link to the recipient so the file can be downloaded by him/her. You can get Dropbox from dropbox.com I use the free version so after a file is downloaded by the recipient I delete the file from Dropbox so I have space for the next file I want to share. Dropbox is fairly easy to use but as with all things in the computer world there is a short learning curve. Sorry, it's the only way I know how to do it. Thanks; I would like to see what you have come up with! .....Gord

Excellent project for the challenge. Keeping it simple in design works really well with the maple and walnut. Is it house clock or shop clock? Will be working on mine tomorrow. Face already poured from resin, and part of the wood is turned. But there is still more resin and turning to do. Happy New Year, Gord! Hope it will be your best “turn” around the sun ever.

Glad you liked it, Valerie. It will be a house clock as the movement is not sealed behind glass. Believe it or not my shop is very dusty! LOL! I would love to see the clock you are doing. Are you going to be showing it on KZbin? Thanks for watching, Valerie! Have a very Happy New Year!

Gord: Like some one says, you are a great teacher. I like the project, with one question, why 48 segments? I think if I was to make this it would have been 60 segments, one for each minute. Perhaps every 5th segment would have been dark wood to mark every 5 minutes.
@GordonRock14 жыл бұрын
Hi Steve, When I made this clock I did not have a wedgie for my sled to make 60 segment rings. I have been encouraged by some other viewers to make one with 60 segments so I am considering making another one. I am in the process of making the wedgie so it may be up soon. Thanks for watching!

I'm quite happy with how it turned out, Jack. One of the viewers has suggested trying another one with 60 segments!! I don't know how well that might work out. The segments would have to be very narrow or it would be one heck of a big clock!! 😃😃 Thanks for watching!!
