Great review as always. The Sam2 really seems to be a very capable e-bike so far. The only, but for me essential, disadvantage is the low system weight of only 120kg with rider, although the bike itself is quite heavy at almost 26kg and is made from Aluminum. Moustache for the new Samedi 29 Game Series offers a system weight of 150kg. And also does YT for the Decoy.
@tcw95NZ4 жыл бұрын
So does Specialized Kenevo! Totally agree, 120kg overall weight is really pushing it for someone over 6ft, even a skinny 6'2" man will be around 80kg, plus 5kg gear, plus 26kg bike = 111kg. Dunno how anyone heavier or taller is supposed to ride it.
@madmountainman51974 жыл бұрын
@Tasunke 1.98m here and 107kg's, so the all up weight's not very good at all. If the likes of Mondraker can build the Level R - which is this bike's direct competitor - with an all up weight of 152kg's on an alloy frame, I don't see why Focus can't do the same. Just what is the point of making an XL frame with geometry that's almost perfect for the six and a half footers, when most of us weigh in over 95kg?
@TheBikePilot4 жыл бұрын
These published weights are not uniform across brands. Some state with rider, others without. Most, if not all, are going to handle above any stated weight. Same as my bike rack..It’s an EU certification thing. I’ve never heard of anyone online saying a brand walked away from a warranty claim as someone was above Max all up weight..The weak point may be a component rather than the frame.
@madmountainman51974 жыл бұрын
Being aware of the component issue i.e. wheels, bars or stem likely to underperform, I asked Focus directly and received this response. Hi Rich, Many thanks for your mail and your interest in our bike! It's depending in the frame as well. Currently the maximum system weight is120 kg for that bike(bike + rider + package). But we are working on new tests that will allow us to release more weight releases in categories. Unfortunately, we can not yet say when we will be able to release them finally. All the best, Anja @@TheBikePilot

Hi Rob- love your v-blog and passion for all things eMTB. The Focus SMA2 looks intriguing but the critical lesson I have learned from my first 12 months as an eMTB owner (Levo Turbo) is the nearby location of supporting dealer network. Maybe I am blessed/spoilt by been located too close to Berkshire Bikes and Chris and his awesome team. A big part of the purchasing decision has to be just how good is the local dealer and based on my personal experience I would only ever buy from Berkshire Bike as their customer service has been exceptional (again based on my personal experience and what I observed while in the store).

Having only every had coil shocks, I rather my next bike had an air one for easy set up (I know the spec down has one but I want the bling). I think weight is a consideration, I'm not a weight weener I've ridden mostly heavy acoustic bikes because at that time (yes I'm old, who remembers Hi5 forks) 150+ travel meant a heavy bike. But I believe a bike has 2 lots of unsprung mass 1. the wheels and 2. the bike under the rider. An extra 2kg is like doing tap dance with a 1kg weight in each shoe (I know that's flawed yes you can pop the suspension, but not always). My wrists are crackered, gone (along with my hair) are the days I can haul my Super8 above my head, wade bare chested through alpine streams, to the giggles of moist frau's. So like you said off the bike it's a pain; bike carriers, roofracks, stuffing them in the boot, stands, steep walking sections, falls, flopping them on your head in the garage.

@alanmcconnell51134 жыл бұрын
The weight isn’t an issue for me. 29er 38’s are over 200g heavier than the 36 equivalent but that’s worth it for the performance upgrade on a big bike. Switching out the stock spring for a SLS spring would save nearly 300g and if the weight really bothered someone then switching out the cassette, lighter cranks & a carbon bar would save a bit more. With a smaller 27.5 rear wheel & tire you could probably get it sub 25kg.
@RobRidesEMTB4 жыл бұрын
Hi Alan, great points. I wasn’t ever feeling that the weight was an issue riding it - it felt great to me. The balance of the bike felt very good and you’re right that suspension adds to it. Tyres are great, they weigh 2.5 Kg alone! But are well matched to the bike where some brands ship paper thin tyres to keep the weight down that need immediately replacing! But shave more weight off and you start to compromise performance. I like your suggestion of a SLS coil.
@alanmcconnell51134 жыл бұрын
The store I’ve ordered from has told me i should get mine in December. Good to hear your opinion on the mullet set up. I was pretty sure I’d switch out the rear for a 27.5 & run it in the longer chainstay setting so your experience on it has confirmed that for me. I’ll need to change spring anyway as the medium ships with a 400lb spring which won’t be right for me so I’ll get a SLS & I’ll be switching the dropper for a one up 180mm so I can slam it all the way down. It’s kind of annoying that hardly any manufacturers let you spec the dropper length or coil spring rate you need. Propain do with the ekano but I don’t know any others.

I rode it in the standard position that lowers the BB and slackens the head angle by 0.9 degrees. The alternative option is the put it in the high position - this keeps the geometry and BB heigh the same but reduces the chain stay length from 450mm to 430mm.

Is it tubeless from factory? Or can you save a couple of 100g more if you make it tubeless?

So today after reading a few of the comments on here I emailed the sales guy at Rutland who I reserved with after he assured me they had pre ordered & were getting their stock by December. Worst fears confirmed! He’s now saying February with no explanation for the change😡

Yup I had the same issues, dedicated ebike shop here and was told early December. Went today to put deposit down and now early Jan. O well I'll just keep pedalling the old school analog bike around till then. Will be worth the wait.

Where can you buy one? Any dealers in USA?

I will never get used to these prices. I have a Trek Slash so I am aware of the overall pricing in the biking world, but man... You can get a 2020 Yamaha R3 for that money. It's just ridiculous.

Or a Porsche GT3 RS for..... but you can't shred dh as well with either.

@@DM-fj8wv nah a new gt3 rs goes for about 215000 gbp no where near 5k.
