The problem with traction on the grades in ruts or holes is because the Ford does not compromise rear payload and towing capacity which means stiff leaf springs instead of the struts of other offroad centric trucks. This means the rear tires have a tendency to bounce a little when looking for footing in this type of test and that is all it takes to lose momentum. The answer is to have some more weight over the rear tires so that the suspension is somewhere in the middle of articulation, and not on the top, i.e. empty bed. It's not the system, and it's really not surprising. You just have to understand whats going on. The trucks that avoid this problem with struts can not haul as much, and cannot tow as much. The Ranger is uncompromised and designed t be used as a truck, so if you want traction. Throw a half cord of oak in back, or a few motorcycles, or some camping gear. Then it will grab better and bounce less and should have the power to deal with it.. I was looking at the Bronco, but then got sidetracked looking at trucks for better towing and payload. The Ranger Tremor is the perfect size and capability for me. But at the end of the day I went with a Subaru Wilderness for now, a softroader vs offroader, AWD vs 4X4, but 15K less and better mileage and it's going to do what I need for now. Still interested in the Tremor tho and Maybe I'll pick one up used in the future. Databyter
@EngineAdventures2 жыл бұрын
Thanks for sharing! It is true that adding weight should help articulation, but it was no where near topped out.
@Databyter2 жыл бұрын
@@EngineAdventures Well, perhaps I should have said "useful" articulation. It is true that you could lift the rear end with a jack and go up several inches before the tires got off the ground. But those inches do not put enough weight on the ground for good traction. The articulation you want on a pickup, especially one with hard leaf springs, is weighted articulation. But regardless, I think we are in agreement. Just different ways of saying the same thing. It's good to have a light load. Even if the wheels were staying planted on the ground, they only had useful weight thru the tires a fraction of the time, and even that weight could have benefited from an increase in bouncy situation. Rear struts are far superior for offroading. But personally I'll take the Tremor anyway even with it's achilles heel. It's still damn capable, and with a bit more load the rear bounce is slightly less problematic. I also think it would have benefited from front lockers like they offer in the Bronco, and like some other Brands offer in their offroad trucks. You don't usually need them, but when you do... And given the Tremors rear stiffness, the front lockers could have been just the difference to make up for the issue. Great video btw, that must have taken hours and hours to film and edit. Thanks, you can really see what is going on there. It's a nice Truck. Databyter

All the latest trucks will shine off-road. Choose how you will be using it day to day, towing, hauling. Most trucks spend most of their life on roads. Great channel. Do you have a summary comparing how all vehicles did over the years- maybe even a numbering system?
@EngineAdventures Жыл бұрын
Funny you should ask, I'm currently working on a full size SUV comparison and the one after that was going to be the midsize truck segment. The problem is that it's taking me about 10x longer than doing a single vehicle video. I'm hoping to finish the first one in two weeks. The one after that will probably be another month or more. As far as the numbering system goes, it's so subjective that I decided not to do that. RTI, approach, departure, break over, ground clearance, wheel travel, articulation etc. are all great numbers, but they honestly don't determine how well a vehicle does off road. They give an idea, but other things that are hard to measure are what really make the difference. Balance, center of gravity, throttle sensitivity, torque curves, torque converter application, etc. are all things I can't give a value for that will greatly affect the off-road driving experience. Thanks for sharing, and it's good to see more interest in a big comparison video between a bunch of vehicles in a class!

The Rangers proven Gen2 TGDI powertrain is smooth & powerful. You can even get performance upgrades thru Ford or Roush to get near 375hp! 10R80 tranny makes use of the engine perfectly. Shifts are pretty much imperceptible & always in the right gear. The ride is more comfortable & that's important on long trips. It's mpgs are better then the Tacoma & Colorado too. All in all it was a done deal after i test drove the Ranger! They had an XLT FX4 on the lot so i had to order the Tremor edition Ranger. Can't wait! MSRP was $45k as i spec'd it out. I have a 2021 Lariat Tremor, and I absolutely love it. It is very well behaved, smooth and quiet on road, and does really well off road. I don't do any really serious off-roading, but on the trails around the lake, it has no problem, even after a rain when there are mud holes everywhere. It does good on fairly steep hills, wet grass, etc. Even with the running boards on, I haven't found any place that I need to go that I can't. If you want to do serious, technical off-roading, then you are going to need to upgrade either one anyway.

Great review. About 10,000 difference between it and the FX4. FX4, new suspension upgrade, proper AT tires. As a turnkey truck though it’s very nice. That rolling back in crawl control, will increase the pucker factor, that’s normally the problem with a manual no way should an automatic behave like that. The Toyota might make a lot of noise but it’s not going to roll back. I like both trucks. Great time to be a 4x4 enthusiast.

It’s not that big of a difference. It’s pretty easy to put some shocks and 32s on. I’m going to be doing that with my Fx4. I have a 2021 lariat Fx4. I wanted the lariat for all the creature comforts but if I had gotten the tremor too it would have put me over budget. This way I can add shocks and tires as I go. I’ll probably even get fox 2.5s which are a step better than the ones that come on the tremor. I don’t really care about the switch bank in the dash. Sorry late to the party, good informative video as far as the offroad modes etc.. my question for you thou is the line the ranger had problems with have you tried other mid size trucks on it like the frontier, Colorado and tacoma? I mean in the reall world you just pick a different line or even try to air down a bit if you're going driving on terrain like that all day.
@EngineAdventures2 жыл бұрын
Thanks for watching and commenting! While the test is on the same hill, the terrain is constantly changing from rain and being driven over. I do remember one other vehicle getting stuck in the same spot but I don't remember which one. I don't fault the ranger at all, two wheels in the air and one buried in a hole. Great question, 2 very different trucks. Personally I prefer the Frontier's power train. I don't like turbos as they aren't as linear as N/A. The Frontier is a basic truck, which has an appeal in it's simplicity. The Ranger has a lot of tech, but for me it's too much. The Ranger tows and hauls better (just an assumption based on payload capacity and driving characteristics, the Frontier I tested didn't have a receiver so I couldn't tow with it). On road empty the Frontier might have a small edge in ride quality.

The goal is to find the limits of the vehicles, I purposely take the hardest line possible that I think I can do without damaging the vehicle. You're right on making the hill worse. Check out one of my videos from a year ago, while all the damage hasn't been from me, I've certainly torn it up a bit. I've even taken a pick and shovel to the hill a few times to remove large rocks and smooth some of the transitions for vehicles with lower clearance.

@@EngineAdventures since the bed is aluminium ... It's light. I put 4 50lb bags of chicken feed in the back of mine and the articulation is great along with traction.

Yeah it has a pretty stiff rear end, I didn't think of adding weight to get better articulation, but that sounds like a great idea on the vehicles with stiff suspension.

All that tech and it can't handle a little hole...50,000$ well spent. 😁

Every vehicle I've tested in that hole hasn't made it out, my guess is the Wrangler Rubicon 4xe I get soon will be able to do it though.
