I like the long format with the chapters in. I have an 18 dct which I like off-road, and an upgrade to the 1100 sport would give me all the things I don’t have, ES, cruise, heated grips. It is fast enough on the road solo but two up touring I find the power low for overtakes. Do you think the 1100 has enough of an increase? Love the channel!

Great video, i have recently bought the ATAS ES DCT 1100 from watching these reviews and i came to the conclusion that over all for adventure riding this WAS THE BIKE TO HAVE , without doubt , add to that Honda reliability, after market parts and ease of service and its game set and match Honda Africa Twin Adventure Sport and i havent mentioned its huge fuel capacity ;) FYI Anybody thinking about DCT , man just go for it you wont be sorry , its fantastic.

I just wanted to comment that this was the most comprehensive and accurate review of the Africa Twin Adventure Sports that I found on the internet, or anywhere for that matter. I picked up a 2021 this past week and love the bike. This review was one of the deciding reviews prior to picking up the bike. A few observations: I think they should name D mode “eco” or something and allow the sequence of D to S mode selectable by the user. So into S first for example. I find the DCT works best for me leaving it in S2 or S3 most of the time. I do love the DCT. I found low speed maneuvers easy (wow on the turning radius), but I understand the intimidation as it’s a constant speed turn where you can’t cut power with the clutch to stop, you’re more committed, but have the rear brake in case you need to stop. It’s just a bit different process. The clutch does have a sort of minor “slip” feel at low speed as well which helps. The menu system is fine. I was used to it and all it’s functions within a few hours (Honda makes a simulator too, check it out). The turn signal switch is not well placed and small imo. Car Play is nice to have (waze, tomtom go, Apple Maps, google maps, Gaia (gpx routes), Rever, OSM, etc) and a big factor for me personally (and DCT). I also was shocked that it felt the same weight wise as the Versys 650 I traded. Weight is very well managed. Another surprise was the handling. I had previously spent time with the 2016 DCT model and found it pretty sloppy on a twisty road. This ATAS in tour or urban firms up the suspension and it handles extremely well for a 21/18 wheeled bike. I was not expecting that. It nearly handles as well as the Versys (which is excellent) with the exception of side to side transition due to the wheel size. I’m very happy with it. I had looked at the Tiger 900/GS/KTM’s etc in the process of picking the AT. Deciding factors were the DCT, CarPlay and long range on low octane fuel. The Africa Twin seemed like the best balance for my needs (long range touring with gravel roads in the mix). Wheelie control is neat, kind of wheelie cheat mode, but pretty fun. I 100% agree on 100hp is just right, and this is a bit of Goldilocks in so many ways, power, range, low octane, features, DCT, CarPlay.

In addition to all that you have said, the looks of the bike is fantastic. I bought mine in August this year and have already done 8500kms. I love it. It is everything that you have said and more. Not having to worry about a clutch frees your mind to focus on other road matters on and off road. I overcome the time lag of the TFT by turning the ignition to on, pressing the start button, start the engine then putting on my gloves and helmet and by the time that is done the bike is ready to go. It has never been a issue. I bought it with the intention to cross the country and travel dirt roads. I also had my doubts but after the first hour on the bike I was sold.

Ditto! 2600 miles on this exact model and I absolutely love it. I still have a few minutes in this video to go. Honda recommends oil changes at 8000 miles. I am considering going every 4000. An thoughts on this?

@@forestmotoadventures Oil is cheap my friend, never wrong to change early. I followed manual mostly, sometimes a bit earlier. Get the Mazinga in tank fuel filter, if you have the adventure sports weld shedding issue, as me and buds have. It's the true resolve! Air filters are pain to change but do in my shop to make it easier. Otherwise a great bike and adventure ride offroad or tarmac :-)

I'll checked out your reviews for the first time, and you are head and shoulders above the rest. you discuss above average more clearly and fortunately less quickly than others, a great advantage for non-native speakers. This is really great and deserves a compliment. There are about 2 billion internet connections in this world, of which less than 300 million are at native English speakers. But keep an eye on it, because with some of the other reviews like Ducati… at the end of the review you speak faster and faster as if you have to catch the train.

I had a 2017 AT DCT - bought her new and once i changed the rubber to more aggressive tread, armored up, etc., loved it for touring around in the dirt and riding class 6 (and worse) roads/trails. By no means a dirt bike, but absolutely rideable off road. I bought the 1100 this summer after a bit of a wait on it's arrival....got the AS ES, manual clutch...changed out the rubber, armored up, etc and was expecting to be able to ride the same trails, the same way. NO SIR. There are Things I like and things I don't like...long story short, my bicep tendon repair surgery is tomorrow....this thing is HEAVY.

@@rickhavingfun the engine is lighter, the swingarm is lighter, exhaust is lighter, the frame is lighter. multiple moving parts were lightened. the balance of the bike was changed significantly because of how things were moved and that is probably what you perceive. side by side the new model can have all 3 propylene cases and a tank bag before matching the weight of the old one. good luck recovering.

Bought the 21 ATAS ES DCT as my first bike. Couldn't be happier. Being a newer rider the bike has enough power to put you on your ass if you try, but not something to be worried about day to day as long as you have a little common sense. I find my favorite feature being the Android Auto and Apple CarPlay built into the TFT display. Being able to plan a route on your phone, then just plug it into your bike an it shows up on the screen is a huge benefit. No need for an external GPS. I'm 6'5" and around 170lbs. I find the Windshield is the perfect height for me but could be a little wider. What impressed me the most is how well the electronic suspension works. I set User 1 as a super comfortable touring mode with the softest suspension and lower power. And I set User 2 as my ADV squid mode with the most power and the most firm suspension. Going in between the two is like night and day. Like you said, one second you're riding on a cloud, the next you feel every little bump in the road. In conclusion, great review, I agree with all of the points you made. I highly recommend anyone looking at an africa twin to pull the trigger and get one, I don't think you'd regret it. I’ve got a 2021 ATAS and absolutely love it. Feels like a klr on steroids. I’ve ridden GSA 850, gsa1200/1250. 850 is nice, the larger bikes are simply too big for me. I will go places I’d never take a big GSA. I’m getting about 475 kms / tank.

@@JohnDoe-ks4id I have a 2020 Adventure sports and at first glance, the seat was a little bit hard. Now I have nearly 40,000kms on it and I have installed gel inside the OEM seat and it's perfect!. I can ride 1000km at a day with no extra tireness. Combine that with some Pivot pegz and you ride like a king!...Very comfortable

I am surrounded by Daniel Boone National Forest so I have loads of trails & forest roads but no problem on the interstate at 85pmh. No drifting or floating about as on my KTM 640. Grant it, I spent 350 miles on the BMW yesterday but no wooded, shaded, isolated trails. I love the DCT, stopped a couple times yesterday to notice I forgot to downshift the beemer. Nobody complains about DCT once they understand how to use brakes to keep it loaded - ready for log jumps, etc. I can typically idle around at 3pmh or slower. Love my Honda

I love the fact u took the time to get comfortable with the controls. I usually turn the key on the bike before I climb in it. Even when I don't, you don't have to wait for the dash to boot to start riding. You start the bike and go just like on the T7.

TRed this today. Long TR of 25 kms. I could definitely feel the bump in power. Super torquey engine will throw you off if you aren’t paying attention. The handlebar is 5 cm wider than my VStrom and I appreciated that. The dash is self-correcting for ambient light. I liked that too. But other than these details I was finding it hard to find merit in the bike. Refinement levels were quite pedestrian. There were squeaks in the shocks and rattles from the panels that definitely feel less premium. The staff told me that they took the bike to the local bike week and really beat it up. They said that it will feel better after service. But that said, their bike was only 5k kms old and it left me wondering if I would have to work hard to maintain it after purchase. This is the issue with bikes like the VStrom. They spoil you thoroughly and make you hard pressed to feel impressed with other offerings. After the TR, I rode my VStrom home and could feel nothing but admiration for its absolutely buttery engine. After 11k kms, there are no rattles or squeaks or creaks. No nothing. Just fuss-free performance. Matter of fact, I remember TRing the Tiger 900s in 2020 and walking away feeling not very blown away even then. Coming back to the AT, the engine is definitely not tractable and will kick and lug even if you are in 4th gear at 35 kmph. Not in the Ninja 1000 league for sure. That bike was in 6th at 35 kmph and made zero protest. But maybe that’s an unfair comparison. An Adv with a twin will never be as tractable as a triple or an I4 I suppose.

Kudos to you for this review, I think it's the most comprehensive one on youtube for the AS ES DCT. I own this bike and I love it. You hit on one of my two dislikes - standing and griping the tank with your knees feels very awkward and not something you can do for long. My second dislike is the seat, after an hour I find myself getting a pain in my ass. Nothing I can do about the first issue, a Corbin seat solved the second.

Geography and terrain is a major factor when choosing an ADV bike. I’m in Australia and ride big distances on gravel/sandy/clay/rocky dirt roads in remote but fairly open and flat terrain. That’s why I have an Africa Twin. If I lived in Europe I’d probably get the BMW.

I hear alot of questions about ES and DCT. After 17000 km on my 2020 ATASes I wouldn't buy it without es! Simple flick of switch you have a competent and inspiring ride in dirt, or added weight, or stiff compliant road bike. Biggest surprise for me! DCT makes riding easier and better all around journey bike. When I upgrade in a couple years, both of these features will be on my bike if still available. :-) Well done Honda!!!!

As always, this was a great initial review. I think the AT ES Adventure does offer a good value for a high end, fully loaded street oriented ADV tourer. I think Honda should just carry on with the AT as a tourer, they should probably just drop the base model. The AT can compete with the big ADV tourers from BMW, Triumph, Ducati, etc. They need to follow through with a Trans Alp mid displacement much more off road oriented much lighter weight real ADV bike to replace the base AT. I hope they can keep a Trans Alp ADV bike simpler, drop a lot of the electronic nanny tech. Just give us a simpler real balanced ADV bike and keep the price more in line with something like the Tenere 700. Actually, I’d be really happy if Honda could offer the CB500X with their take on the Rally Raid upgrades. A couple more inches of suspension travel, wire spoke wheels, let us shut off the ABS, (at least the rear), that would about do it.

@@Yutter89 Honda could easily squeeze a reliable 60 HP out of the CB500X motor. It is purposely kept at 47 HP to meet tiered licensing power requirements in some countries, such as the A2 license in Great Britain.

My grumbling aside, I completely agree especially with the power output show by the 450L. A modern 500~650 should easily put out more than sufficient power for a light bike. Perhaps that maybe why they are being cautious to step in that direction. I do find the twin a bit too big for smaller riders like my wife (5'1) that would like to enjoy a similar DCT set up in a more compact option

I would say, specially for an American that maybe never driven "stick" it would make great sense to start with DCT, learn all the other traits of driving a MC without having to worry about clutch and all that! When you have all the basics down, add the clutch! That is my thinking!

Great review. I have a 2016 DCT. It took me about a year to fall in love with the DCT, but I can't imagine riding without it now. All the electronics don't tempt me to upgrade to a newer bike. I plan to put a lot of miles on in the next few years touring and doing some off-road. If you ever want to just talk about tires, I'd appreciate watching.

I own an NC750D Integra S (2015), which is mostly the road-oriented brother of the X-ADV. As the other NC bikes, it utilizes the Dual Clutch Transmission. I must say that the DCT is really a game changer. People do not realize that you can intervene in any situation by using the paddles. They also havent thought that this is not just a mechanical system, it is a computer which is not in your head as you have also said but in most situations it would understand what you want to do. Finally the most important thing is that bikes with DCT have the ability to move extremely fast because the dual clutch system takes away the lost time of the one and only user-used clutch: The next or previous gear comes already loaded so the bike shift gears instantly!!!

Dimitris I fully agree with you. I have had my Integra for 4 years now and have 35000 kilometers on the clock. Once one is used to the awesomness of DCT you cannot go back to manual.

This review was extremely valuable for me as a current shopper for a new 80/20 cross-country solo touring bike. You certainly opened my eyes to the possibility of DCT. I had previously disqualified that option due to my own "motor-memory need" for a clutch. However, having observed your demonstrations and discussion, I will seriously reconsider. You didn't mention how this bike fares in the drop test. However, I'll assume your drop test result for the previous model AT is still applicable. Thanks for all the help. Meanwhile, I'll get used to off-roading with my new KLR650 ABS, and then maybe trade it for the advanced-tech touring bike of my dreams. Thank you for the information.

You nailed this review. The info got better and better as it went along. Took me several sit downs to finish (family life), but the content was so good I had to finish. Often times videos get stale or repetitive. This kept strong till the end. Congrats. I thought my old GSA was way too tall, wide, and heavy. You may have me convinced to get this with DCT. Hopefully this engine feels more alive than the first model (only one I have tried).

There are replacement springs with higher spring rate for heavier rider or load offered by touratech. They have options either for the standard suspension or the EERA I own the bike since April 2021 or 28.000km, the most relevant modification was to cut the windshield down and buy an aftermarket seat- every thing else is fine

You're absolutely right in stating there's not much negative to say about this bike. I thought my 2014 super tenere was a good bike ( and it is!!), but hell yeah this africa twin puts an even bigger smile on my face each time I ride it.. the punch it has, the sound, the agility, the off-road capabilities.. i do have a T700 as well that i use for more rough off-road.. but I'm not afraid taking the AT offroad as well. I'm also a driving school instructor and i choose the clutch version instead of the dct because you have to demonstrate slipping clutch for the driving school exams.. yet i do have a quick shifter installed that perfectly works for up an down shifting.. some people ask me if i have the dct version because it shifts so smooth and sounds like shifting automatically... no it's me with the quick shifter working super. The only thing which bothers me on the Africa Twin is the front brakepads that make noise when you brake hard.. i have to demonstrate emergency braking and although having ran new brake pads in for more than 100km before doing emergency braking.. the first time i again demonstrate emergency braking as part of the driving school exams, the front brake pads keep making noise even when braking standard to a little hard braking during riding.. have been back to Honda 2x changing brake pads but that awful noise ( like old citroen cars 2cv do) keeps on getting back... tired of paying for new brake pads now.

Ian, thank you so much for all of your content and hard work. I've been between this Africa Twin ES and the Norden for a long while now. Finally found and pulled the trigger on this 2022 model AT ES. After much debate, decided the extra money for the Honda quality was worth it. Wanted to be able to jump on the bike and just go anywhere without any thought of the reliability. Please keep it up. Out of all the CCs out there, your opinion carries the most weight to me.

I own a 2020 Adv. Sports ES non DCT but with a quickshifter and i agree with most things you said in your review. Ive been thinking about getting a DCT version myself, it really makes you notice the landscape a lot more and also makes traffic much less annoying. I would switch to a 1250 GSA but the only thing keeping me at Honda (and im a bit sad you didnt mention it more) is the implementation of android auto. Having a digital screen is (IMO) not very useful if it only displays the speed and RPM but having your whole phone on there is SO great when touring... I can manage google maps easily, listen to spotify / audible, i can even take phone calls and get whatsapp messages read out loud. Its a feature that i really dont want to miss and is the only thing keeping me from switching away to BMW because ive heard their implementation with the BMW app is still very buggy. I hope they implement wireless android auto at some point, the only annoying thing is always having my phone connected via cable. One more thing: When anyone is switching from the 1000 to the 1100, please be aware that the sound took a big hit because of EURO5 emissions. The 1000 (2019) had the perfect stock exhaust sound for me but the 1100 seems a lot more neutered.

Having owned several dual sports up to 500cc’s & having covered thousands of double and single track including 1100 miles of the Oregon BDR on a KTM 450 EXC, I can’t imagine riding anything more than gravel roads on one of these beasts given their size, weight, and cost. And I’ve done that on my 350 scooter. That said they are wonderful all-rounder street bikes that do everything surprisingly well. Plus they look cool. This is coming from a 21 1250 GS owner. Like the new Q&A format

I’m thinking about buying the Honda NT1100 when/if it comes to the US. It has the Africa Twin engine and frame. Which is why I’m asking you this question about a sports touring Honda. Have you noticed problems with the engine case having shoddy casting? And if you have problems with your AT, is your Honda dealer responsive or do they try to avoid standing behind their product? I watched a You Tube by Andy Man Cam in Germany about the nightmares he is having with his new Honda CB1000, and how the dealers there want to blame him for the problems. I’ve had Honda motorcycles starting with my Honda Cub 50 in 1968, and Honda cars, and they have all been bullet proof with good dealer support when needed. You do a great job of assessing motorcycles and I trust your judgement. The NT1100 will likely be my last bike before my kids take the keys away from Me because I’m too old to ride. So I don’t want to buy a bunch of headaches. Thanks. Bill

Thank you Ian. GREAT REVIEW!! The manual shifters (using in S1 or S2) are extremely helpful for changing the gears down on the steep and twisty downhills here in the Sequoia National Park. I especially appreciate that we don’t need to be in manual mode to use them.

25:30 says a lot about the suspension the fact that you can talk normally while riding off-road! Great review impressive machine. Also, good job mounting cam to view the front suspension in action. 31:00 BMW GS sounds very impressive - too bad about the reliability issues.

Great review. A lot of other reviews whine about the start up time and the complexity of the TFT, without talking about the benefits such as tunability of the riding modes plus the suspension. The ATAS DCT looks like great value. This looks like my next bike. Will wait for the availability of the lower windshield on the 2022 version though.

Great review! I like everything about the Honda Africa Twin Adventure Sports, Except! I would like an option with Analog Speedometer and Tachometer, and push buttons instead of computer screen. Also, I would be fine with setting the suspension manually. The only high tech feature that I would like that no "Adventure Bike" has is an electronically adjustable wind shield.

I rode the full features AT today. Very impressive once I got used to the no clutch thing. Ride height was tall even for me, 6'2" but manageable. Plenty of torque and seems much faster than my old 750. Seat was not comfortable and an hour in the saddle seems like it could be painful. So, back to my bike and a 25 year gap in technology. Ride ON>>

Well, I purchased this very same bike (in tri-colour) as my very first bike 😓 I should have watched this video before taking the plunge - although I can flat-foot the bike, I dropped it at a red light and it’s beaten my confidence a little. Riding on the highways is awesome, but maneuvering this bike at slow speeds is whats scaring me a little. I’m glad you spoke of the brake feathering while applying a little throttle. I’m going to try that this week. Thank you for making this video and sharing 🙏 I’m sure it’s helped countless others in many different ways!

One thing you did not mention .. I love that it is just connecting the phone with android auto so I have exactly the same system as I have in my car on the screen .. Google maps, Spotify, Radio, handsfree phone, etc etc. Worth mentioning that one must have a bluetooth headset paired to make this work. You must also approve the phone as a secure connection so that you do not have to make the connection every time you use this system. The phone must also be connected with a cable. I have by the way never regretted buying 2020 ATES .. in tricolor of course :) beautiful bike. and feels like Christmas, New Year's Eve and birthday on all trips for me. Great and comprehensive review that should be so long to be able to say something in depth about this bike, and other bikes for that matter.

Excellent review and dig the long format with Chapters. Only thing to add is maybe a comment on accessories such as lights and such. As a GS owner it is really nice to be able to easily add Aux lights using a Hex Ezcan or Denali Cansmart. I believe prior to 2021 the Africa Twin didn’t have a Canbus system. Love your videos always rich in details and info. Keep it up!

I've been looking at adv bikes for some time now. I'm so glad I found your video on the AT. I purchased a 2022 adventure es dct, I traded a harley street glide in for it. I was tired of seeing roads I couldn't go down and I wanted something lighter, faster and more fun. FYI, they still haven't fixed the Drive mode, it still shifts way too early and lugs the engine, I run in sport 2. I only have about 150 miles on it but but I love it so far. I'm having fun looking for accessories for it. I am having an issue though in that I've found some paint coming off of a weld on the frame. I currently have an appointment to get it looked at and from what they've told me Honda wants pictures so they can evaluate and move forward with the next step. Thanks for helping me decide.

I really appreciate this review. I think you talked me into this over a V-Strom1050DE. A dealer near me has one with 15,500 miles still in good shape. It's a bit more than I was wanting to pay, but it sounds like I would be happy with an ES DCT.
