The updated 2021 Hyundai i30, in theory Hyundai has taken what was already a good thing and made it even better, there are some subtle changes. but i think there is one big question we need to look at with this particular vehicle because it's the entry level model with an automatic transmission. Does the most affordable Hyundai i30 that you can get your hands on with an automatic feel like you're missing out on anything? Let's find out.
As tested, our base auto i30 starts from $25,420, while the next model up the tree, which is the Active Auto, starts from $26,920, both before on-road costs. If you want the regular range topper, outside the performance variants, that will set you back $36,220 for the N Line Premium auto, also before on-road costs.
Standard inclusions on this model are lengthy despite the sharp pricing. Outside, you get 16-inch alloy wheels and face-lifted styling, while inside the cabin there are three driving modes for the auto we're testing here. Smartphone mirroring is standard, along with. 7.0-inch driver's display and the 8.0-inch infotainment touchscreen and six-speaker audio system. There's no digital radio for this model grade. The steering wheel and shift knob are leather trimmed, and the driver's seat is height adjustable. Second row passengers also get AC vents.
Strangely, and it's one of the few things we can't actually work out with the updated i30, this specification grade has wireless Apple CarPlay only, but no wireless charging. So that means you have to connect your phone via Bluetooth, but still plug in to charge.
That 2.0L engine generates 120kW and 203Nm and drives through a six-speed auto with sequential shift mode. The ADR claimed fuel usage for the auto is 7.4L/100km and on test we used an indicated 8.1L/100km.
This new entry-level model, which is known simply as Hyundai i30, now features the brand's SmartSense safety package as standard equipment, which includes autonomous emergency braking, and lane-keep assist. Automatic models like this one also get adaptive cruise control. Hyundai i30 carries a five-star ANCAP rating from 2017. It's covered by a five-year/unlimited kilometre warranty and capped price servicing scheme. For the entry grade, as well as Active and Elite, that servicing plan - which is required every 12 months or 15,000km, will cost $897, for three years, $1196 for four years and $1495 for five years.

My girlfriend bought herself the 6spd manual. She doesn’t have a license yet so I get to drive it. The 2021 i30 is highly underrated

I had a base i30 (pre-facelift) as a loan car and it was surprisingly good. Fun to drive, perky and really good quality compared to the previous Focus and the Astra (I'm going back a couple of years). Best part was there was no piano back on the console which is more than can be said for the Mazda 3. I also test-drive the N-Line but surprisingly I thought the lag from the turbo or the DCT robbed the car of some fun and made it almost dangerous at roundabouts and give-way signs.

Hyundai i30 began with the SR with 1.6 L4 turbo technically run on E10 unleaded instead of regular; SR superseded into N-Line.

great review! is it possible to purchase a standalone upgrade for keyless start AND entry? instead of having to jump up 3 variants to i30 Elite which costs 10k more??

I have had the 2021 hyundai i30 now for nearly two years and travel long distances regularly, I have found the adaptive cruise control has a particular bug, it will switch off randomly and can take up to 7 hours to switch back on, if at all, so far Hyundai has replaced the radar and done at least 6 realignments of the radar without successfully remedying this problem, having compared notes with other people that drive the same model I have discovered that this is a common problem that seems to suggest a software error. The cruise control will reset if you are able to follow another car for 10 or 15 minutes at varying distances from the car in front, this issue always involves the forward safety module and that will fault whether switched on or not and even if the cruise control is switched off or not. Fuel economy is amazing and I have got it down to 5.8 liters per 100km at 110 kph. I use this car mostly on open roads to travel 950 km back and forth to work once a week in each direction.

Thanks for creating and sharing. I currently have a HYUNDAI ACCENT 1.6 litre and thinking about upgrading to a new i30. I like what HYUNDAI has done with the new i30. The base model that you reviewed was good, now I just have to decide [as you said] do you really need larger tyres, etc. DM.

i30 is a huge step up from an Accent in terms of quality. Even a recent Accent is comparable interior wise to an i30 from a decade ago as they haven’t updated the Accent.

Had one as a company hacker few years ago highly recommend big na 2.0 eng mated to a proper TC auto dam thing went like a rocket never timed it but felt 0 100 mid 8s fuel consumption was exactly what use to get high 7 to low 8L 100 .that drive train you'll find long term will be far more reliable than those low compacity highly stressed turbo with a dct that require 95ron were the i30 is not fussed what fuel you use I'm sure you could piss in the tank and it will still run

If you will own it outside of warranty the corolla all the way. Otherwise i30 is the one. That said the i30 should be quite reliable for a time. Just the corolla more so.

Unfortunately the new Corolla is so low that you drop into the seat and can't get out😅 Boot is minuscule compared to the old corolla. I'm still driving a 2003 corolla hatch, it's a beast. But I would like a few mod cons now which is why I'm looking at the i30.

They come with more than just an AM/FM radio these days Lukus hehe Have a read of this article if you are interested. In 2011, P-platers or those on the very tightest of budgets were relatively spoiled for choice in the new-car market. For vehicles priced below $20,000, there were 170 variants available across 33 models from 21 brands. The i30 is a fabulous car and is not the nasty pizza-delivery Excels they used to make. I think they're making better cars than Honda with modern tech and safety and a 7 year warranty. I'll happily pay an extra 5K for that.

3 Hyundais in the family,Excel,Getz and the latest is an i30, the Excel has clocked 500000 ks and no trouble, but its been given away to a bloke who races Excels . The i30 on a loong run has produced 5.4 litres to the 100ks. Buying a new or second hand car,look no further.

Why is there no mention of the faulty Infotainment unit? The Apple CarPlay frequently drops out, losing maps and music controls. My wife I30 has been faulty since delivery 11 months ago. Hyundai Australia and the dealer admit the fault exist but will do nothing to rectify it.

@@Parrot1957 I was lucky enough as I use Android so I don't experience this, Hopefully they fix it but I did some digging around and Hyundai advised its not the car but an Apple issue and Hyundai have requested Apple to update this soon but they never advised an ETA. Since Apple takes forever to release updates for these sort of things, I would say it will be around a few months time so best to stick with the cable instead of wireless for now

Kia and Hyundai infotainment is hi tech but is a bit glitchy and isn't as user friendly as some other vehicles. Other than that they're a good solid car.

Unfortunately most manufacturers are dumping all their old gas guzzling engines on Australia as we have no fuel economy standards. These old normally aspirated engines suck back up to 50% more fuel than a turbo with same power and torque. Sadly they also have poor performance. Where Europe gets almost exclusively small turbos, we have to pay up to 10K more to get a turbo. Manufacturers like SKODA even dropped all their entry level Fabia which did have a turbo.

The $10k extra is the clue. Turbo engines cost that much extra, more when you factor in the additional maintenance and lesser life. Higher tech fuel must cost more to make, and govts to date have not seen the point of mandating them when we don't have the population concentrations to make the point source emissions a big enough problem.

Much prefer it when it's time to replace fuel pump and injectors that kind of thing. Much cheaper for lower compression simple motors. For leases or people that are selling when it's not that old then sure get the extra power and torque from a smaller motor.

Carful with Hyundai. A friend from work had one and it blew an engine at 90k and Hyundai nor the dealer were paying to fix it. It was only until she took it to the ACCC that anything happened and even then it took 3 months to get the car back. Needless to say when she did she sold it.

@Go To Channel [𝐋!𝐯𝐞 S.A.X] funny, we had a Focus and loved it. Ran for over 200k no issues. I guess it doesn't matter what car you buy it can be either perfect or hellishly bad. I currently drive a 2019 Camry company car and it's always had transmission problems and the dashboard is literally falling apart. My opinion is Hyundai, Kia and most Chinese and or Korean brands are ok short term purchases.
