We compare the Hyundai i30 and Toyota Corolla hatchbacks to determine a winning small car.
These white hatchbacks are a hugely common sight on Australian roads. But which is best? In today’s episode, John compares the updated Hyundai i30 hatch in 2.0L petrol form with the Toyota Corolla hatch, also in 2.0L guise. Both of these small cars have much to like about them - but they have their shortcomings, too.
Which small car is your pick? Corolla, i30, or something else entirely? Mazda 3? Volkswagen Golf? Voice your opinion in the comments.
While you’re there, please consider subscribing and joining our Chasing Cars community.

Correction: in the video, it's mentioned that the Corolla has wireless CarPlay. A slip of the tongue - only the Hyundai i30 in this test has wireless Apple CarPlay. Smartphone mirroring in the Toyota is wired only.

My wife & I test drove both cars recently. The I30 definitely had a more premium feel & the boot space in the Corolla is too small for our needs. Driving the Corolla, we did like the independent rear suspension but not the additional road noise nor the sound of the AVT. Maybe something you would get used to? We both agreed that the Corolla didn’t offer anything that was worth paying more for let alone the $2K difference. We had a budget of $30K, so we went with the I30 Active full new car. Leather seats, metallic paint, 8 inch touch screen & 17inch alloys. I think Toyota is only competing on it’s brand at the moment.

Thanks for the review. You are spot on with your observations. I sat in the Corolla, i30 and Astra back to back and the i30 was far superior in interior quality. Everything was exactly where I expected it to be. The seat foam and contouring was miles ahead of the Astra and the Corolla was dark and dingy inside, like a cave. I believe Hyundai has now surpassed Toyota and Honda for engineering and quality.

The Corolla is trying to hard to be sporty abandoning the practical aspects that made it a bestseller. Hate the trend of boot volumes and rear legroom getting smaller but the metal getting chunkier. I drive a Mazda3 sedan as I want a usable boot but without the frumpy Corolla sedan shape (I love the hatch design) and gutless performance when merging or overtaking compared to my 2.5L.

I think you nailed it John, in this comparative review. Practicalities, i30. sporty drive, Corolla. So often in these small hatchbacks and compact/small SUVs sold here in Australia (some expensive European models included), you don’t get rear directional air vents and cup holders, Hyundai is definitely one step ahead of the pack, with its i30.
@User-cb4jm
@User-cb4jm 2 жыл бұрын
VW Golf started the trend with rear air vents and a boxy shape for good rear headroom. Glad the i30 carries the torch so that we don’t have to get VW reliability (or lack thereof), if we want a practical small hatch.

My question is a little off track, which hatch is more economical, comfortable and reliable in the long run with better resale value, i30 or Cerato? I don’t think Corolla hatch is practical for families and I don’t like CVT transmissions as I owned a Lancer Fortis. Resale value is based on perception rather than the actual quality of the product.

Excellent review! My family is in this kind of market at the moment. Really concerned at the jump in prices. 1) I prefer the look of the i30. Carolla is ok, but detest the rear end protruding chin bumper. Lean toward the 'minimalist' 130. Certainly not going to argue with anyone that likes the Carolla. 2) Corolla boot/trunk is useless. Not sure what Toyota are thinking on that? Have seen these in real life and you would have to have zero use for carrying stuff. I guess there is the back seats? You never covered laying them down, but assume easy for both models. 3) If you wanted a 'drivers experience' not sure you should be looking at either of these 2? Plenty of other options that would suit (RIo Sport?). Suggest these 2 models are for more conservative/fleet style buyers therefore that darn boot again on the Toyota.... Great to see these 2 compared side to side.

It is getting ridiculous I agree, a few years ago (not even ages ago just 2015-16), you could get a full size Camry (2.5L) for $28,990 driveaway. I can’t justify buying a new base model car, I’ve bought a high-spec previous gen Mazda3 with low kms, I’m happy here with my heated electric seats, xenon headlights, head up display, Bose audio, dual zone ac etc and the cherry on top is it supports CarPlay natively even though this is a 2014 car with the old MZD system. The real reason I bought it is for that sweet 2.5L engine that does highway merging and overtaking more effortlessly than these 2.0L cars could ever dream of. Could’ve bought 2 for the price of these cars. I didn’t want a sunroof, but if I did and paid more for the Astina, it would have AEB, blind spot, adaptive cruise, rear cross traffic, etc all standard. Some of those features are an option on my GT, but mine doesn’t have them. Goes to show how advanced the Mazda3 was 8 years ago.

I have a Porsche 981 GTS and a Hyundai Elantra GT Sport (1.6 L Turbo), I think the Elantra is by far the better value with a more timeless straightforward design. With its 201 HP, it clearly has a edge in terms of driving experience over the Corolla. The feel of understeer can be successfully mitigated by changing the R18 wheels from 225/40 to 235/40, which gives it also a understated yet sporty look.

Goes on the smell of an oil rug. Fantastic economy. Horific drive, felt every bump, extremely noisy in the cabin. Very low to get in and out of, if one has any back issues forget the Corolla. @@user-qn7dy4sp4k Personally I think that the Korean Hyandai is trying to find a place in the world market for the sale of its cars, but Toyota is older than Hyandai and remains, in my opinion, more reliable and we must not forget that it is he who remains the master undisputed hybrids at present and for wrc rallies it is always first !!!!

@@yanng3790 Toyota is the No.1 Car manufaturer in the world and its safety is known wordwide and Hyundai is no where near Toyota in sales. But I feel in recent years, Toyota's car design is not in its perfect form and toyota is quite late in catching up the trends. It is getting outdated.

@@user-qn7dy4sp4k Yes it's true what you say I also noticed it in my island REUNION the sales between HYUNDAI AND TOYOTA are jostling but I personally prefer the JAPANESE brands, I prefer more reliability first performance between TOYOTA AND HYUNDAI are very close even if hyundai does a little better in engine terms but TOYOTA prefers to focus on reliability rather than performance, it leaves it for the RALLY WRC or for its top-of-the-range cars like the TOYOTA SUPRA which I also love. sorry for my poor english

Wow, how did Toyota do so wrong in terms of practicality in recent years :( ... i drive a 2013 corolla hatch and was planning for an upgrade. Both the new corollas and rav4 were not very impressive or worthy compared to the other options out there now. So sad I have to leave behind toyota... ( i was looking at bit more space and both those cars are lacking that)

Both looks great, tho i30 better on interior But corolla drives better and quiter i30 have better gearbox, we aint even talking about dct yet Corolla have had better engine for sure, both for comparing NA 2.0 or below those motor Relatively same price Hmm... Corolla then, solely because there is nothing to match Toyota's realiability

Great review, John. Very detailed and interesting. The i30 would be my choice and I would feel more confident in that based on the review. Btw, the word you are looking for is 'diverge' rather than 'divulge' for where the cars differ. ;)

@@va1195 I've chosen the Elite Ms V; because of the premium interior, infotainment and better sound system - I pick it up next week. I prefer the long-term mechanical simplicity of non-turbo engine and conventional auto gearbox. Beware of markedly higher insurance premiums for turbo "sporty" models too.

It's a good point. The base 3 feels a bit undercooked with those little wheels and plastic steering wheel (I know the Corolla has a plastic wheel, but in the 3, it's pretty galling given the rest of the interior materials are so plush). However, the 3 G20 Evolve is $31k driveaway and makes a good case for itself.
