Rebecca Jackson reviews the Lexus RX 450h L to see if this big hybrid SUV has what it takes to challenge newer rivals. Powered by a V6 petrol engine and two electric motors, the RX 450h was once one of the most fuel-efficient of the large SUVs. However, with newer plug-in hybrid rivals now on sale from the likes of Audi, BMW and Volvo, Lexus no longer has the edge when it comes to fuel economy. Can the facelifted RX 450h make up for this in other areas? And how much extra practicality do you get in seven-seat L configuration? Rebecca takes the big Lexus through its paces to find out.

Several years ago I bought a brand new BMW X5. Despite being well-maintained, its engine blew at 140,000 kms (and BMW would do nothing for me because it was a year beyond its warranty). I've had two RX's which were MUCH more reliable. Just bought a new RX450h yesterday. Looking forward to many years of (reliable) enjoyment.

I had a similar experience with a BMW 550i V8 Touring, at 133’000 km & 11 years, motor broken and the BMW dealer & another independent garage confirmed it would too expensive to repair. Purchased a 2nd hand Lexus RH450h from 2011 3 years ago, which now has 147’000 km and had not a single repair so far.

Only B58 BMW engine is probably the least problematic. Germans mindset of complexity and complication are kind of cool makes things irrelevant these days. Lexus is still quieter, last longer, and simpler in many way of the engines and transmission works. Yes, hybrid system looks very complicated but it rarely breaks in typical 10y/200k miles ownership. Toyota put all the energy and complications on important high tech like Inverter, battery, and cooling instead of gimmicky electronics and sensors that keep broken in most German cars.

I have a 2021 RX450hl, only done 20k Kms with it, it never misses a beat. You just know when you get in and press the start button, you will reach your destination. Never had that feeling from the range rover I had before. It was always a toss up of whether you would arrive at the dealer on the back of a flatbed or at the place you wanted to go. 😂

I have the RX 300, bought it as a cheap comfortable runabout 6 years ago but I still have it, its 16 years old now with zero fault codes, everything works and it drives perfectly, sails through MOT's without advisories, the garage only ever do what is specified by Lexus on each service with no extra things required, if you want a reliable car that you can drive with that feeling that it will never breakdown then from my experience Lexus is the way to go, it is true though that Lexus could make the RX a world beating car in every respect if they wanted to but I think they are too scared to change stuff too quickly, I personally think they need to go for it they've proved over and over they can make awesome cars even performance cars.

If it were my own hard earned money, I would definitely buy a Lexus SUV - why? because they are far more reliable and give better aftersales service than and other brand making SUVs including BMW, Mercedes, Landrover, Audi or Volvo. I would never buy any of these vehicles due to their documented poor reliability record and in some cases poor aftersales service. Kia/ Hyundai are good but in my opinion Lexus still offer a better overall buying experience. Lexus cars are not perfect but in the most important areas reliability, engineering, aftersales and build quality they are the best in the world.

Engineering? worst performance compared to competition, very limited engine ranges, very dated design, interiors and technology. Infotainment is a joke. Apart from reliability and excellent new warranty/service package, it really has nothing going for it. In a world where finance is cheaper than cash purchase and allows you to change cars every few years, and all cars generally being very reliable in their first 3 to 5 years of ownership. A cash purchase of such an expensive car from new is probably the worse financial decision anyone can make.

I love my Bentley Azure 2001 for its beauty, interior and turbo engine, but my wife’s Lexus RX 450hL is great for picking me up when the Bentley decided to die in the midst of my journey, sometimes when turning or crossing another road. Indeed exciting! The Bentley has 22,000 miles since new….with every service performed by to book. I always carry my smartphone when getting in to the $400.000 Bentley. The top of the line RX 450hL 2021 with every option in the book ended up at $68,000, and it will probably run just as good as new for another 250,000 miles. Ah, the Japanes engineers know what they do! The 450hL is our 4th Lexus. Never one mechanical issue since the first one in 2006! Impressive!

@@aerotus888 I’d only had it a few months at the time of that comment but yes, 58mpg over each tank in summer is normal. The overall average over the last 9 months (including winter) is just under 55mpg. Put it in eco mode and drive it gently and you could probably get more though. The RX isn’t even comparable, it’s a much heavier car with a 3.5 V6 whereas the CT200h I own has a 1.8 Prius unit and is lighter. US based reviews can make it sound like cars aren’t very efficient because of the difference between a US gallon and a British imperial gallon so watch out for that.

I was annoyed by the cruise control allowing overspeeding down hill and the infotainment is poor particularly the voice control. However it does make voice control phone calls ok. I find the F Sport seats squeeze inwards too much due to the side cushions and I'm not that big (190 pounds). There was a $10,000 USD up-charge in the original MSRP of $70,000 due to limited part's availability at the time. Also my NEW RX is painted cloudburst grey and has a black interior with black trim. NOTE: We DID have to pay the full $85,000 MSRP for the car because of Lexus not offering ANY incentive's or money back/discount's/rebate's due to the chip and material shortages. We paid with a $85,000 check rather than financing for any form of monthly payments. also there was also $5,000 in Maryland taxes too. I have averaged 35 MPG overall I've only driven my RX roughly 500 miles so far.

One small detail that we liked is Lexus salesperson was very friendly and hassle free to deal with. Audi, BMW & Mercedes salesperson preferred a give me your money and get lost kind of sales technic. Lowest i ever got was 6.7L/100km( heavy traffic, maximum efficiency for hybrid) and normally average around 7.5L. Wife averages around 8(heavy right foot plus she couldn't care less about hybrid and mpg gimmick). We don't get adjustable damper in NZ, unless it's F sport model, but it's not a deal breaker imo

I'd fancied an RX Hybrid for my retirement ever since I was lent a couple of times for a few days at a time around 10 years ago. I just love the relaxed way the Toyota/Lexus Hybrid system drives. They were top trim then and listed at nearly £60k. On one of the occasions I woke up to about 6-7 inches of snow, and would have needed all morning to dig my Prius out of a drive that was a tenth of a mile to the road! I wondered about putting the RX transmission into snow mode and raising the air suspension, but decided to just put the lever in D and see what happened. It went down the drive as if there was no snow at all. Most impressive. Wind forward 10 years, and the RX is no longer available with air suspension, an enormous disappointment. Plus this modern trend of massive grilles that I find massively ugly puts me off too. If I had one it would have to be the standard RX not the L, as I'm still not ready to risk having no spare wheel. I also don't like old fashioned instruments having been used to digital for 21 years and a third of a million miles! However, when I last looked at the choices I could have the F-Sport trim with Takumi option pack to get all the equipment and a nice digital instrument display. In fact, a little while ago, my dealer was selling their MD's 10 month old Lexus in this exact spec and I nearly bought it. What stopped me was that at the time the Lexus didn't have a speed limiter, which wouldn't have mattered so much if the Cruise Control could have a set speed lower than 28 mph. Apparently current ones can be set down to 18 mph; this is SO useful in the plethora of 20 mph zones springing up everywhere.

I've had mine since Jan 2017 - the longest I've ever kept a car - perhaps lock down contributed, but the build quality is second to none at this price level and the seats are excellent. Fantastic prospect as a used vehicle purchase but technology has moved on since the current gen RX was launched and the updates are mere tinkering. I suspect the next RX proper will be an EV - my dealer mentioned that Toyota have been working closely with Panasonic on next gen battery tech. Whichever way they go, the RX now desperately needs a plug in option as a minimum and ultimately a full EV option to remain a viable new car alternative to the German and Swede rivals.

Strange that you begin with a lot of negotism. And the hallelya for the plug in hybrids. In a few years electricity on the highway will be more expensive the petrol. And that for the few miles you can drive on it. The 'official' rates says nothing when you drive more than 100 miles a day. And because the extra weight of the real plug ins , they will propably have more thirst than the Lexus.........(and electricity is not for free)

CD player cost is minor but for older or non techie who do not yet stream music it is great and there is also an hard drive included, so you have and iPod included as well, you just record the CDs and once done you can bring them back to your home. My 2011 model has space for about 75-80 CD if you do not compress them (full CD quality) and in most case it finds out by itself the name of the artist, song, and the Mark Levinson sound system is really excellent

Funnily enough about the CD player, a Freire driver of mine big into music..just purchased a new Volvo XC90… wanted a CD player which was an option… when I asked why he wanted it he said ..sometimes I just want to put in a cd no dicking around with his iPhone or streaming… just bought a 2017 rx450h with 22k miles on it … drives like a dream

Many people still want a CD player because it gives higher quality sound than streaming. Do you think car makers don't think about these things but somehow you do? They probably thought it takes up minimal space, some people still want it, those who don't want it it is no hindrance having it. Clever.

Test drove Audi Q7 and kids hated it. The ride was uncomfortable and road noise intolerable. Tried toareg and Honda crv. Kids did not like it. The moment they got into lexus rx the whole family pushed me into buying one. The quietness and luxury is impeccable. Enough power when you need it with really good acceleration. Admittedly not as fast as toareg but more than good enough for a family.

I really dont get these 7 seats cars...what is the whole point of it if no body can fit there? Is also unsafe, imagine lorry behind you on the motorway doesn't see you,who ever is sitting at the back, good luck to them. Especially if you put two small kids in there. Better make more room in first and second row,and plenty of boot space, that's what people need the most.

I've had one for just over a year and after that time it's being moved on. They missed the mark big time with infotainment, the ride is way too soft over anything but smooth roads and gets annoying. I'm 6' and 15st but the seats are too wide for a car that rolls, pitches and yaws as much as this. The dealer experience from where it came are beaten by Toyota itself and others, there's there's arrogance to them. I get 35.3mpg over 4500 miles which is OK but it plummets on motorways. Reliability is excellent yes. I loved the car when I got it but after a year in it and 10k miles I've had enough and I'm sick of it.
