Welcome to my First Drive video of the all-new Lexus RX450h Plug-in Hybrid. I decided to give it the ultimate test and take it on a 500 mile road trip to Cornwall with Mrs G and the pups.
The new RX450h has a striking new look, especially in this striking colour Sonic Copper. The fit and finish inside the cabin are of the highest quality and the plug-in hybrid drive train delivers a smooth drive to cover miles with ease. But what is the car like to live with and just how complex is the drive train and how efficient is it ?

Personally, I feel Lexus are one of the best car makers out there. Reliable, well made, comfortable, stylish... One thing that is second to none, seems to be the dealer service. Lexus, seem to look after their customers better than many, if not all brands do. A great car, although the colour is too 'out there' for me. Great review!

I love the look of this car, way better than the out going RX. Having been a Lexus owner in the past, I can talk from experience about the way these cars are so well built, are supremely comfortable and are Uber reliable. This could get me back into a Lexus.

Hi Pete, try the NX equivalent. £50k (base model that comes with all essential kit) virtually identical apart from ‘luxuries’ you don’t need. We use it EV locally and on a run south to St Austell from Sheffield we get 38mpg - we drive it pure EV in town and switch to HV on the motorway. Been running ours for 12 months and it is everything you have described in the RX for a lot less money. The total current average MPG figure @ 8K is 68mpg when 80% EV use during the week to work and HV for 2 long journeys per month to our son in Daventry. Great review. By the way, I have to switch off ‘lane assist’ every time we start the car - modern life with nanny state legislation, just get your head around it…🙂

I do have a soft spot for a Lexus and that colour is certainly very striking... I did have to chuckle when you showed the typical Cornish road... On our last family trip to The Kerno, we ended up on a road just like that with a blooming squirel that ran for about a quater of a mile in the centre of the lane and kept stopping to look back at us, then carried on running along in front of the car... It was rather funny!!

Looks a lovely car and I really like the design. Personally I would go for the ‘self charge’ hybrid model and save £12k on the price. Still an expensive car but, as you say, aren’t so many similar quality cars ridiculously expensive? When I bought my RAV4 hybrid (which I think is a great car) I worked out it would take me 8yrs of fuel saving to recoup the extra £10k for the plug in hybrid over the ‘self charge’ hybrid which over the last 15mths of ownership has averaged 50mpg in general mixed driving ..

What a great looking car... Do like SUVs - not just for the high driving position but also the extra headroom - I'm "only" 6ft3 but have a very long back & neck which makes 'ordinary' hatches etc a bit tight for headroom - had 6 months with a 1-series and I lost count of the number of times my head hit the roof when going over bumps.

Interestingly, I get 35mpg from my previous generation RX450H on longer journeys. Where this gen will succeed is useage on shorter trips with mpg in mid to late 40s achievable. The interior looks far more in keeping with the times compared to prev gen, so that's a definite win. The V6 power train does tick a box, which a 4 cylinder cannot. The price is a reflection of modern-day high-end vehicles. As always, it's a very good video 👍

Sorry if this is a daft question. I owned a Lexus F Sport hybrid a while ago and loved it but sadly it had to go as I lost my job. Now I'm working again I have a Hyundai Ionic Hybrid that I've had since 2019 and really like it. I'm now considering a PHEV. My question is, once you use all the charge from the battery and return to hybrid driving, is the fuel economy lots worse than a standard hybrid due to the added weight of the extra battery? Thanks.

Great review Ped - the interior of the car looks great, but the exterior colour - can only describe as metallic beige. uuurgh. I have a Rav4 hybrid, these are great cars - and they have a spare wheel. I agree with your comment about the £80k price tag. As suggested go for the hybrid not the plug in - just not worth the additional cost - will take far too long to break even.

Hi Ped, Good review! I work for Lexus and the bong is indeed annoying, I suspect it will be fixed with a software update at some point, Sport mode is accessed via the screen, 4 little boxes in an icon at the bottom will open a page where you can quickly select drive mode, and to confuse matters S on the gear selector is more to be thought of as simulated gears. I recommend if our press team let you have a go try a day or two in the RX500, if the press team can't accommodate you let me know and I'll be able to wangle you our one for a couple of days.

I am 100% with you regarding the speed bong. In no country of the world will you be punished for going a couple miles or kilometers per hour over the speed limit. So everyone will be annoyed by it going off instantly and either turn it off, or tune it out. Both of which completely defeats the purpose of an overspeed warning. Make it go off at 5, 10 or 15 speed units over the limit, user-configurable, and it does serve a purpose other than legal CYA. And yes, I do like the color!

Evening Ped and Peddlerz 😎 Beautiful looking car, love the front end design, the rear looks just like the Audi. The inside is very nice, you can see the quality and the seats look mega comfortable. The main screen is massive but fits well within the dash, like the 'wood' effect aswell 👌I always found my Golf GTE was great for local running but on a longer trip it wasn't very fuel efficient at all, especially in regen...Great car but not sure I'd go PHEV again. The Lexus is definitely a great vehicle, especially for a roadtrip, the colour reminds me of the classic Mini 1100 Special 'Rose'. Great review overall 👏, think highlighting the bong issue is harsh as it mandatory to reset every start by legislation, so not just a Lexus issue and all new cars will have the same/similar bong!

And that’s why I don’t use Waze very often as it sometimes takes you down what appear to be “farm tracks” of b-roads & there doesn’t seem to be anything in the settings to stop this happening!😂😂 The first time it did it on me I was in a van & the width of the road & lowness of the trees really wasn’t suited to being in that vehicle 😊

I watched this vid because of you and your tests. I am not an SUV person and much prefer my (sorry) Mondeo estate. Your test was good but it just confirms that SUV's in my eye's are over rated. I like auto boxes (old man) but my Mondeo Mk5 is a manual due to the expensive Mk4.5 Auto that I had but I do not like the idea of the old DAF elastic band type box. Hybrid is a very good system and possibly my next car will be that drive train. By the way Tracey needs a mike next time as very quiet.🙂

Is a 4 cylinder engine enough when the EV battery depletes and the vehicle moves to usual hybrid mode? My understanding was that anything less than V6 will keep such size SUV underpowered and revving the 4cylinder engine. Please, advise.

4 cylinder is fine. You will just see the fuel economy take a hit. Most hybrids are 4 pots.

Come off 303 before Stone Henge at Solstice services & turn right to B roads that run just north & parellel to 303. Can rejoin 303 further down. Roads are mostly clear, lots of straights & you can use the right foot. :-)

Looks better than previous models & the cabin looks fresher too. Not sure I'd get on with the high revving nature of it though. As for price, most hybrids are mega money, nature of the tech I guess. As for the colour....erm, no!

Lexus looking over their shoulder at Mazda - a lot of that looks like a crib of the CX-range - it looks like a pumped up CX-30 with a CX-5 Takumi trim level interior. Imitation is the sincerest form of flattery... 😉

A speed limit bong would be a deal-breaker for me. 100% "no". Here, we generally get a 5km/hr buffer before getting tickets, so 53-ish km/hr is almost universal.

Agree about PHEV’s being a good compromise - especially with the current charging infrastructure. My only gripe is most PHEVs have smaller petrol tanks than their full ICE equivalent. So once the 30-50 miles on battery have gone, your left with a smaller fuel tank.

But only 2 minutes to do a full tank..😊 So no big deal.....but in a trip from Berlin to Madrid for exemple in a day you need to stop much more times😅

First thing I love the colour . I get mid 40s out of my 2.4 Honda on a run . How many PHEVs are ever plugged in ? We had some at work , for tax reasons, that always ran on petrol ! So you’re lugging heavy batteries around with reduced luggage space ! You’ve explained why I will never buy a new car , too many intrusive electronics . I loath SUVs the worst breed of car , estate cars better . 24:44

Hi Ped I have always respected the perceived quality, and the first class service from the dealerships. As for your loan car, colour sorry no thanks. Looks - rear & side profile OK, but front profile NO, like BMW does nothing for the car. Interior looks good. Cost some would say expensive but have you seen the price of the opposition. Think I will stay with my current daily, still got 2yrs on the extended warranty.😉

Classy looking car as a package but not so keen on the nose being so blunted. Lexus does get the reputation of being for older and retired drivers but I suppose I am retired but have not accepted I am old yet even though as a boy if you were 60 you were definitely old. I have to admit having just driven an Evoque plug in Hybrid it might have been the better choice than the i-Pace but that said I still really like it. Lexus not for me but I see the positives.

Despite my dislike for SUV's, it seems like Lexus have done a good job here. Unfortunately, it's the same old story though, the RX450h starts at £67k, going up to £81k, which immediately rules it out for almost all buyers.

I thought forthcoming legislation required all cars to have the sort of speed warning and control, that annoys you about this Lexus. I thought I recognised your Hotel as Budock Vean near Falmouth. The peninsular it is on certainly has that type of country lane. i have yet to find a navigation program that gives the option of route that exits the main A and B road network at the point leaving the shortest country lane travel for the final sector. There are many parts of Cornwall and Devon where that would be very useful. Lexis just lack that sporting feel which attracts Porsche and BMW buyers
