I traded my Audi A3 in for a Mazda 3 PP Hatchback 2 weeks ago. Personally I think the Mazda is better looking and has better quality. It has equal performance and comfort. This is my 4th 3 hatch including a 1st and 2nd gen Speed3. All the people that are complaining that this is not a Speed3, no its not and that is a good thing. This is much better than the Speed3s of the past.

I too previously owned ‘10 Speed 3 before trading that in for a CX-5 at family time. I got my Turbo PP Hatch about 2 months ago and got rid of the great CX-5. Like you I love how much more refined this car is compared to the Speed 3. I only tracked my Speed 3 5ish times, and the rest was commuting here in the DFW metroplex. This Turbo 3 is the perfect blend of performance, luxury and tech at this price point. I had considered a CLA 35 AMG, but would have had to spend another 20k to get it optioned out similarly. Made no sense. I agree with this great review, if you are on the fence, you really should test drive it.

Similarly I have serious plans to swap my 2016 GTI SE for a 2022 Mazda 3 Turbo hatch, just waiting for the dealers in my area to get more in stock (they sell as soon as they roll off the truck) so I can play them against each other for the best deal. Luckily I was able to test drive one when a nearby dealership got their first one in and was thouroughly impressed, unfortunately that same car sold like 3 days later and every one they've gotten in so far has sold in less than a week. I wish Honda would hurry up with the 2022 Civic SI hatch to give this some competition, and me more price leverage.

@@jbm0866 i think I bought the first one in the St Louis metro. I have been happy with it so far. I only have a couple of complaints. The gas tank is too small, even though they say it is 12.7 gallons I have never been able to fill more than 11. The tires are touring tires, which I understand their reasoning (noise levels and ride quality) but a higher performance tire would make a world of difference in performance/handling. One last thing, if they put a DCT, which they won't do, this thing would be really quick. It is quiet, comfortable, peppy and looks very nice. And considering you would need another $10k for a comparable German brand, not too mention maintenance and reliability i don't think you can go wrong getting one.
@jbm0866

@@ntharting8959 I do think the 6 speed auto which has been around for quite a while now is holding back the performance capabilities of this and all their other models, but there is no set timeline for when Mazda's newly developed 8 speed will actually go in production cars, and certainly no guarantee it will be fitted in any existing models even if it makes its debut in the new Mazda 6 next year. Yes, the cost of ownership thing with German cars is real, and even though I havent had any major, show-stopping problems with my GTI, a lot of little things do add up, and I've had it nearly 5 years now and its approaching 70k miles. No way will I trust it for a few more years and beyond 100k. I think the older tech (talking engine/transmission) as well as its simplicity and conservatism is in Mazda's favor when it comes to reliability. Even though a multi-link rear suspension would be prefferrable to an enthusiast, with a torsion beam rear (well tuned) it's unlikely driving on bombed out streets will require an expensive 4 wheel alignment at some point. Also, no turbo engine will last as long as the same engine naturally aspirated, but I do think Mazda is one of the few manufacturers of turbo engines that can potentially take you to 100k+ miles (toyota/Lexus are another, maybe Honda) with regular maintenance, and thats no small feat.

Great review. Loved it. Also, love this car. I bought one this week. This is my fourth Mazda 3 and the best one by far. Got the hatchback with the premium plus package. It is white with the red leather. I think it is just a beautiful car. Love the power. Just so much smooth torque. Just a joy to drive. I feel the same way you do about Mazdas. To know how I feel about them, folks need only watch this review again. Thanks again for this. It is the best review I’ve seen for this car. (And I watched them all for the month and a half I waited for my car to be delivered with my specific options.) 👍

the transmission definitely holds this engine back. If this thing had a dual clutch or the ZF 8 speed its performance would match the germans. But the mazda built 6-speed is really reliable so there is a pro there.
@jax1079
@jax1079 3 жыл бұрын
Totally right. There's nothing wrong with the transmission, really; it's just not quite as responsive as the German competition. It's honestly a bigger deal than the lack of space because no one is buying this car expecting it to be huge. At least, no one with functioning eyes is. Thanks for watching!

@@jax1079 I actually have this car, I have a video in my channel, though it is in Spanish (kzbin.info/www/bejne/ZmramHawf7mcoa8), I agree, for pure performance driving the transmission is lacking, however for every day normal driving the huge amount of torque that the engine has, is a big plus, I find myself using manual when driving on the highway or 2 way roads and using only 5th or 6th to over take other cars, the low end torque really is fantastic highway driving. But word has it Mazda is going to release a new 8 speed and if it is as good as the 6speed was almost 10 years ago, it should at least be as good as the ZF 8 speed... ps Mazda was also the first brand I uploaded to my channel.
@ZoraPMC
@ZoraPMC 3 жыл бұрын
@@jax1079 trust me, a performance transmission would be a risk to their reliability. I have over 127,000 miles on my 6 speed automatic on my 2015 Mazda 3 and it still shifts like brand new. They might have slightly tuned the transmission, drivetrain, and suspension for the higher torque from the turbo...and that's EXACTLY how I would buy the 2021 Turbo 3 because I can be confident that the turbo can handle tons of miles of regular and spirited driving. I wouldn't call myself an enthusiast BUT that 6 speed I have now FEELS AMAZING to a casual like me cuz it downshifts properly for power moments.

Awesome review.....I've had the turbo3 hatchback for 6 weeks and I'm loving the luxury, the quiet interior, the backup camera is very clear, and the Bose speakers spread out make it a very fun ride....acceleration on the highway is a blast. I don't need a rocket, but I wanted something to drive to give me an option to maneuver around aggressive drivers who want to own the lanes, and this beautiful hatchback does it for me.

What a quality review ! Totally agree with your points. I own a 2016 Mazda 3 hatchback, because I like Mazda's philosophy of making cars. They offer great products, and they come with affordable prices. They do not blindly follow things most people do. I am not a fan for a huge display, touch panel, and complicated infotainment system. It damages the interior quality for sure, and just too many distractions. Mazda pushes the limit to produce even better cars now. New models are absolutely premium. I hope Mazda 3 Turbo can be seen in Taiwan ASAP.

I have to leave a comment here for you my man...phenomenal review! You in a very easy to understand way dissect the journey Mazda has been on, and highlight why they are punching up into brand new territory...how they are about to receive the credit and clout they deserve. It has been hard to describe the quality and value to people who are fixated on big brand names and outdated industry info. I've probably seen 8-10 reviews on this 3 Turbo Premium + package, and yours is the most comprehensive and relatable I've seen. I'm about to pick up the Premium + Polymetal Gray w Red Interior, upgrading from a 2018 Hatch GT. Bravo. Bonus points for the quirky humor 👏

People here in north america tend to just drive with the daytime running lights, therefore the rear rights dont luminate. This makes it very hard to see one of these from the rear. Mazda needs to fix this problem to avoid rear end collisions.
@buchajo
@buchajo 3 жыл бұрын
You’re referring to Signature lighting. That’s only available on the higher trims of this vehicle. Otherwise no headlight rings. I have the mid level trim and so I just drive with my full LED headlighting system on all the time. It’s white and bright and looks cool - not the rings but whatever. As far as the issue with daytime running lights in general not lighting up the taillights that is a concern for sure - and has been ever since daytime running lighting came out on all vehicles a few decades ago. Whoever engineered that made a huge oversight....

Yes, great video & review, thanks for making it. Good humor too... I don't suppose you tried fitting a bike inside while you had the car? I wonder if the 3 could swallow one without taking off the front wheel. That's become one criterion for my next car, which is tough if you don't want an SUV.

Now the final piece of puzzle for Mazda to get to the German rivals is interior ambient light. Ambient light is so cheap to do but it elevate the interior to a whole new luxurious atmosphere during night driving. Because the beautiful stitchings and the quality materials used can't be seen during night driving. A well designed ambient lighting can make the interior look so luxurious simply by use some LED light strips. Germans have realised this, and look at the new 2022 C-class ambient lighting, it is breathtaking, even better than the previous E-class. I don't know why the Japanese premium car makers are so reluctant when it comes to ambient lightings. Lexus, Acura and Mazda need to up their night drive game.

 @JAX I agree, this feel more luxury in every way , I had a 2010 Mazda 3 Gt and the differences in quality and luxury are day and night , I'm just so sad about the lack of options with manual transition. I'll still prefer the NA with the manual than the turbo with auto. I hope Mazda knows what it is doing, a lot of people consider the Mazda 3 as a cheap, good looking, "sporty" commuter car. Don't take me wrong, I think it worth every penny this new Mazda 3 but I feel not everyone will agree.

Great review...so good I had to watch it twice lol! Just curious as to what kind of gas mileage you got while test driving the turbo 3. I’ve had mine now for a couple months and only seem to be getting about 320kms on a full tank. I do most of my driving in the city but still seems below average. I recently filled up with 94octane and car only has about 1300kms driven so let’s see if it changes anything but would be curious as to what others are getting

@@jax1079 i have a veloster n. I love everything about it except the ride quality. The car is amazing when pushing it at its limits, but it’s so bad as a daily. That’s why I’m looking elsewhere. Seems i will be giving up a lot of performance with the Mazda 3 in terms of handling, feedback, precision, excitement. But at the same time - the Mazda shines where the veloster doesn’t. It’s been tough evaluating all the factors. I can’t stand a slow transmission so i was hoping the Mazda w paddle shifters was a little more exciting. No car can match the velosters DCT gearbox for under 50k. It is so good.

@@jax1079 hahahahaha i couldn’t agree more. The Mazda is stunning in person. The veloster is the most fun car I’ve ever had. The type r is the perfect balance but also 45k. I got my veloster used for 23k!!! Hell of a steal!! Taking daughter to school and more of a daily commute is hard to live w veloster. I find myself not going out cause i just don’t want to deal with it. I’m picky though. If someone worked a veloster for a month they wouldn’t mind, but I’ve been daily driving mine for 8 months and over it. I’m normal daily conditions 80% of the time it sucks but when you are pushing it - MY GOD!

Absolutely, but even we enthusiasts have to admit that it's a lot different to live with a car than just sample one. With better adjustable dampers, the Veloster would reign supreme. Hang in there a few more months and see where they go with the new Civic. My review comes out Sunday for the standard model, and that platform is EXCELLENT. Looking forward to the Si and Type R.

This car has really caught my attention for its looks and quality. If it had 50 more Hp and a rear LSD, no brainer for sure. I was surprised to hear you compare the Mazda 3 Turbo to the Civic Type R, but not compare it to the Veloster N. Both from a price and spec standpoint, those two would be closer than either a Type R or a VW Golf R, but I wonder from a driving experience how the Mazda Turbo and Veloster N compare.
@jax1079
@jax1079 3 жыл бұрын
Check out my Veloster N video. It would absolutely destroy the Mazda 3, but it does come with a pretty hefty ride quality penalty. The Type R can tone things down far better than the Veloster N can, making it more multi purpose. The Mazda 3 is much more "mature" but not nearly in the same handling league. Hope that helps! You can make this your own Mazdaspeed. Throw in some coilovers, sway bars, bigger brakes, wheels and tires and some braces and you're there. The power is already there. That's how I would mod this. Leave the engine/drivetrain alone and work on everything else.

Then you talk about how fully loaded it is, for an all wheel drive car that doesn't even come with heated side mirrors for the winter.
