One reason the Mercedes-Benz E Class is so successful is because it’s available in sedan, coupe, convertible and wagon versions. And each variant is true to the intended mission. For 2021, the E gets some cosmetic freshening and a tech boost starting with the MBUX interface. And it will text you if someone dings it in the parking lot. Tom Voelk takes a look at a modestly optioned E 350 4MATIC. And the turbo 4 is plenty powerful if your ears are okay with the note.

Yeah, a 4-cylinder with leatherette seats? That's tough to stomach in a $65k Mercedes, especially when there are such strong competitors within the segment (Genesis, Volvo, Cadillac) who can give you the same (or more) for less cash. That's not even to mention a fully-optioned non-luxury car like the new Kia K5, Volkswagen Arteon, or the Mazda 6 (!) which will save you gobs of cash.

That 3 pointed star usually offers directions to the nearest Mercedes dealer for warranty work. Nice car, but for my hard-earned money, I'd take an equivalent Cadillac. Maybe even the discontinued Lexus GS350 (which would now be a great value). This car is a lease, not a buy. The Caddy or Lexus, would be a buy. Or....would take a hard look at the new Genesis.

Like the inside but outside leaves me a bit cold. Spiraling options list always stopped me from giving them a serious look. I'm leaning towards the decked out G80 myself but would like to see what happens with the ID.4 in the US. I know it's a totally different class of vehicle but if I go EV, that would probably be my pick. Definitely won't be a Tesla as I think they're poorly built and have sorely lacking interiors. The German car makers have all figured out that the most efficient compromise between fuel efficiency and power of a turbocharged combustion engine was to make each cylinder being a little over-square (i.e. stroke slightly shorter than bore) at exactly 500cc each: 4 x 500cc = 2000cc = 2 litres. Hence the ubiquitous 3.0 litre 6s and 4.0 litre V-8s throughout their lineups as well. Cadillac and the high-end Japanese makers followed suite because the marketing folks said to, perhaps.

Taxes in many markets are based on engine displacement (2.0L for 4cyl, 3.0L for 6cyl, 4.0L for 8cyl). There are also legitimate efficiency benefits for engines with 500cc/cylinder. You may remember a few years Sergio Marchionne acknowledged the wasted capital of manufacturers investing hundreds of millions/billions on virtually identical engines.

Why would MT worry about reliability? Utility? It's an E-Class, not a pickup or SUV. A 200K Porsche isn't any more useful or affordable to anyone. Leave the reliability to people who can actually measure and track it, Consumer Reports and those rags. MT, C&D and the rest have a car for a few days of testing for those awards and lists.

Always thought it was overkill to have two stars so close together so I'm perfectly fine with it.

No one bought it and MBUSA gave that version the ugliest wheel choices in the U.S. It's quite handsome in Europe with the traditional grille and star and the right size/design wheel.

In Europe they get this option. It is called elegance option. From the driver seat you can see only half of the standing star. I do not like it. (On my old 211, you could see the overall star from the driver seat)

I love the auto start/stop test. Audi really needs to work on the roughness in this regard. I drove a 2020 A6 2.0T for almost two months. The system was harsher than the auto start/stop in my sister’s 2019 Chevy Equinox. I have driven the Cadillac CT5 Sport but didn’t get a chance to test this system. I hope the E350 is much better.

The E 350 is pretty good, the 450 with the mild hybrid is nearly seamless. And GM does stop/start very well for the most part, and good that it's putting defeat buttons on its vehicles now.

Evil twin is a musician??? You should have told us earlier! We look forward to hearing your twin in one of his gigs! ;-) My next car will probably be a Mercedes. but I would not consider it not being an 8 cylinder (must be my concern for the environment...). AMG most definitely. And... second hand, of course! These car can run well over half a million miles if well maintained, so... No problem. And what a price difference! However, I am very disapointed to see that there are lesser and lesser REAL opening sun roofs these days. How come? The pandemia should remind car makers of the greatness of this feature which means only one word to me: Freedom! (whithoug the hassle of a true convertible!). I noticed your "vive la différence". As a true Frenchman, let's put it this way: it di not sound quite like it, but you're on the right track, Tomy. Carry on! I was thumb's up number 80 on this video! Looking forward to your next video and thanks for giving us more hindsight about your Costco metric (the best one was about one of the co-founders who said you could go ahead with your funny gimmick: who wouldn't like this funny story!).

For those complaining about the engine, in Europe we get an even crappier 1.6 liter 4 cylinder diesel engine from Renault, making 160 HP. You got to thank shitty left wing government fuel economy regulations for this. Next gen AMG will be 4 cylinder turbo hybrid.

Gluing two iPads together must save Mercedes a ton of money by not having to bother designing a dash.
@Yormsane

Agreed 100%, and it looks so trashy and out of place. The kind of thing you'd expect to find in a Ford Fusion rental car. Mercedes used to have classy analog instrument sets in the 80s and 90s, but today's buyers apparently want iPads flashing and beeping at them instead. What with this, the weird Euro-metric USB sockets, and the tiny, barely-usable climate controls... what a mess.

Yeah, I hate the recent dash design Mercedes gone for. All their cars looks like they've just had tablets glued on; it just looks cheap. The new GLE looks particularly terrible. People give Cadillac a lot of hate, but the new Escalade is a much better example of this sort of set up. It looks sleek, rather than cheap. GM as a whole is actually pretty good at integrating the screen into the dash/center stack: see the Cadillac CT5 and most Chevy/Buick products. Contrast those with the terrible screen slabs in the new Toyota RAV4 or the Ford Explorer. In the luxury segment, Volvo does a good job integrating the screens. I also don't mind the higher-up placement of Acura and Genesis (also Mazda, in the lower-price segment).

I laugh everytime I read these types of comments by uneducated people. Same people criticizing Mercedes are the same people who can’t afford it. First of all, an iPad screen isn’t that narrow, so stop acting sped, it’s called innovation. Also, it doesn’t really save them money. It actually makes it more expensive because they have to figure out how to put 2 screens in one piece of glass, and the screens have to work flawlessly without any lag. Again, you wouldn’t understand the quality and class of a Mercedes cause you have probably never owned an actual Mercedes. Nice try though

@@rayyanismail109 I'd rather invest my money than blow it on a luxury car, Thank you. It is still a cheap design. Look at the Bentley Flying Spur. Manufacturers don't need to spend that much, but it shows you what a nice integrated dash looks like. I can't afford that car, but I am complementing the design. Do you get it now? Being critical of design doesn't mean they can't afford it. But if it makes you feel better about yourself, insult away!

A loaded kia cadenza is roomier, has a better performing and sounding engine (v6) and costs about 20k less than this lightly optioned e class. Used to be if you wanted performance, safety and tech, you had to pay more. With mercedes and BMW selling what appears to be Buicks, I don't see the appeal of their sedans.
