Mercedes tech here. Had the opportunity to drive one of these a while ago (still havent broken down so we havent seen these in the shop yet). But all I can say is that this thing is on a level of its own. I have never in my life driven anything like it, its an experience you have to experience to understand. One thing Sarah forgot to mention that is really cool on these is that the whole instrumentcluster is 3D, which is especially cool if you have the nagivationscreen selected, feels like looking into the screen.

3:15 - Those dimples serve the same purpose under the car that they serve on the golf ball. They create a boundary layer of air around the surface, allowing for smoother airflow around that boundary layer. On the golf ball, that gives the ball greater aerodynamic efficiency to allow the ball to travel farther. On the underside of the car, it will allow the car to experience less drag due to the way that air is made to flow underneath it. The Ferrari F12 has air channels that run from the grille to the center of the hood, and from the upper-outer sections of the hood to the sides of the car just below the A pillars. Those channels help to create a similar aerodynamic boundary effect on the top & sides of the car.

You're completely on the money giving it the lowest wrench score ever. I've logged a lot of miles in high- mileage examples of MB S550s as a professional driver. The massage feature kept me from having to visit a chiropractor in 80 hour weeks behind the wheel. There is a reason why these tend to be leased, and why they lose >$100K in value by the end of a lease. They are extremely fun to drive right up until they're not. Too often they've become so mechanically crippled that to fix the components only MB has the diagnostic workstation to reflash or reset, you would be way ahead by parting it out. So they stay broken. I'd wager 95% of the black car service MB sedans are limping along with some major feature or several being broken.

The panel dimpling: on a golf ball, it reduces overall air resistance. So I expect this application has the same purpose. The skinny antisway bar maintains more compliance on rough roads, but seems inadequate, yes. The difference in lateral resistance to body lean is taken care of by the "E-Active Body Control" system on a constantly adjusted thousanth-of-a-second analysis basis, per the MB site.

Very interesting, informative, intelligent and sassy review. Rarely see reviews where the underside and the engineering is so closely scrutinised. Many valid and astute observations Sarah. Whoa all that plastic is scary and looks very cheap and flimsy like it won't last very long. Yeah Sarah sure will be challenging when diagnosing electrical gremlins in 20 years time! Had a friend with a 6 month old E320cdi and Mercedes could not pinpoint the fault so they ended up just replacing all the ECUs and a range of other components, crossing their fingers that they'd managed to rectify it.
@rayschoch58822 жыл бұрын
Mercedes engineering has been superlative for decades. But, as Sarah noted at a couple places in her review, service can be insanely expensive because some of the components are very difficult to access, and some require partial disassembly of other components before you can even get to them, not to mention the specialized tools needed for actual service. Finally, note that Mercedes is NEVER on anyone's list of "most reliable" vehicles. With a lot of TLC ($$), they can last a very long time, but the cost per mile can get ridiculous. No thank you, especially at this price point.

Amazing amount of tech in this car, most of which seems to be designed to isolate the occupants from any driving sensations. Obviously, this isn't intended to be M-B's driver's car, nor is this the kind of car people would keep for many years and hundreds of thousands of miles. M-Bs in general are known to become money pits as they age, due in part to the expensive parts and all that complex engineering which requires mechanics to disassemble half the car to get at things that only require removing a few bolts on "lesser" cars. Great review, and it's nice to see a car like this reviewed from a more "regular person" reviewer than typical for something like this.

One of the points that car reviewers fail to highlight when testing cars is RELIABILITY. This is clearly a time-dependent aspect, therefore difficult to estimate when testing a new car for a few hours or a few days. But it is also one of the most important points for those looking at reviews. This is precisely why many of us enjoy your videos and especially the sessions where you lift the cars and analyse them from below. When you show the bottom of the car, many are interested in the technology, but many also try to understand whether the quality of the materials and technical choices will allow the car to last for many years. A tip: you could introduce a score (Ants? Camels?) to estimate the reliability of the car. We all know Lexus are the most reliable cars, but these are beliefs developed over the years and they are not immutable. For example, many reviewers like the Lexus NX 2022 but argue that the Genesis GV70 is better. It would be interesting to see if Genesis is improving reliability and the GV70 can be expected to last as long as a Lexus NX or if it's just a nice car to keep for the first 70,000km.
