That's a very sexy bike. I'm super impressed by the cable integration through the stem while it's equipped with the mechanical version of the ultegra groupset. It makes me think of doing the same on my 2020 supersix evo. I thought that the cable integration was not recommended with mechanical gears

I've seen vids on your channel before - always leave a like - this time I subbed. Excellent review of an aero bike that is south of $5,000 US. @highfived said it well below - "you chose the right model." Especially amidst the plethora of reviews of the Specialized Tarmac SL7's which are borderline disgustingly expensive. This Merida bike is quite well done at this price point. I agree with you that the frame color is beautiful 👌 and I'm impressed with the specs of the bike especially the cable integration at the lower priced model. The one weak point for me with this bike is - yeah - a lack of deep profile carbon wheels. But that would of course add to the cost of the bike. If I already had a hot pair of carbon disc brake wheels from another bike ready to swap onto the Merida, it's a pretty sweet deal.
@davidarthur4 жыл бұрын
Thanks Brian. I've been lucky to manage to arrange a review of a reasonably affordable model and I'm glad you appreciate it. I think you could budget in some nice wheels on this model with the money saved compared to rivals from other brands
@waynedoherty77584 жыл бұрын
If you are considering buying deep wheels to match this bike the Reacto 8000e adds Di2, carbon tier upgrade, aero cockpit, and deep Reynolds wheels. The weight drops to 7.8kg, and those wheels aren't super light either. It ends up costing and weighing about the same as the Emonda sl7, but looks more aero if a little scary in crosswinds perhaps. I did notice on the Merida Australia website they have a weird disclaimer about their bikes not being guaranteed for the stresses of racing. That seemed pretty disturbing re warranty.

Another great review! But now I'm terribly confused between a Reacto, TCR, or an Emonda. The TCR is clearly lighter, but is it aero enough to keep up? And is the Emonda too heavy now in the lower tiers to fend off an aero bike that is loosing weight such as the Reacto? Amazing to be lucky enough to enjoy such first world problems :-) I mainly ride in the local mountains trying to beat my own PBs, or doing Gran Fondos. Tarmac SL7 would be killer, but I've ruled it out due to cost.

I doubt it too, considering the number of components that go into a vehicle, compared with those that go into a bike, it is unbelievable that a Di2 Groupset is more expensive than a top smartphone. It's a skewed supply chain not even built on demand or cost of R&D. Hope China comes up with alternatives to rival the best and bring prices to sensible levels.
@dovgoldberg4 жыл бұрын
I agree that bikes at 9K and up seem extremely overpriced. Perhaps when a carmaker invests so much time into a car it is selling many more models of that car. So for a superbike where superior engineering is required will most likely sell fewer models so the increased price is worthy of the work that went into it.
@BikeLife1544 жыл бұрын
Dov Goldberg what superior engineering? They can’t even get the tolerances right on press fit BBs! That’s why they’re all going back to threaded BBs. Stop trying to justify their ridiculously high prices. These bike manufacturers sell many bikes overall! Take for example, Specialized, they will sell many of the lower end models of the SL7 so your comparison to car companies selling many cars doesn’t hold water! I could buy 2 Giant bikes for the same price as the SL7. In fact, I would rather do that. If I bought a Propel and a TCR I would have 2 bikes that are made for specific purposes rather than a pretender!

@indonesiaamerica70504 жыл бұрын
I'm curious to know the weight of the saddle, wheels, tires, handlebar, stem and seat post. That bike seems a little fat considering the frame weight claim of 1010 grams. The wheels are not going to be used for serious rides, so that's one problem solved. If most of that extra weight is tucked in to a higher than claimed frame weight, that's a problem. I think that the stem is probably very heavy considering the earlier models that I've seen for "open standard" cable integration. Even the G3 Venge stem is a boat anchor. Upgrading the bar, stem and wheels should be able to clip a good half kilo off of that monster. And that would make for a very good performer for the price.

So the frame and fork on the 9K bike have a combined weight of 1422 g and the frame and fork of the sub 3K bike have a combined weight of 1500 g. I get that DuraAce Di2 will be better and weigh less than the ultegra mechanical - but 6K (pounds...which is a whole lot more in Canadian Dollars) is paying an awful lot for these marginal gains. Hold on a sec. I own the previous version (love that bike to death) and it has no integrated cables. Anyone know what the extra £400 buys you from 5000 to 6000? My dad has a set of mavic carbon disc wheels which I could use so could shed some weight. And I much prefer the bahrain-mclaren paint on the 5000. So hard to get hold of at the moment though

Great video! New to the channel and trying to get into biking. Looks like a potential decent investment

Consider the Merida Scultura instead Ben. Cheaper, perhaps more comfortable. Unless you are looking for a real racing machine or that amazing paint job.

You must mean the Venge, but I think it looks absolutely nothing like any Specialized bike 😂

well, Merida does own 49% of Specialized...

I want it in this blue, but not this orange... DAMN! Why didn't they just add a different shade of blur instead of this, it would look awesome. Or the whole bike matt and the branding in glossy. Would be nice indeed.

Loud freehub is a must. It's better than a bell. Lol. So for me the big question is how does it compare to the same spec tarmac you had last week

Somedays I prefer my quiet freehub other days I prefer my old set of wheels as noisey as a football rattle.

Arn't we all getting fed up with manufacturers using the excuse that they have to meet UCI rules. What they're telling us is that they could make something better if they weren't constrained. What a joke. Good review by the way David.

Thing is they are designing race bikes for the pros they sponsor so they need to adhere to UCI rules. Interestingly I asked Specialized's Chris Yu if they had looked into designing a bike without the UCI rules and he reckoned the difference wouldn't be as massive as you might imagine.

@@davidarthur TCR ADVANCED 1+ DISC PRO COMPACT is e2899 here with ultegra and carbon deep section wheels.
