A very fair review. I've had one for a year. The panoramic roof is a huge bonus. It costs very little to run and has been completely reliable. My commute is 90 miles each way on motorways and it does it with loads to spare. I charge it for half an hour and drive home again - on public chargers that's roughly a fiver. It's the most relaxing motorway drive I've ever had - pop it into MG Pilot and it's very reliable and safe. On my drive this morning I got 3.6 miles per KW. One day last week I got more than 4 because of road work enforced slower driving

You've had one for a year and it's been reliable. Personally I would hope any car at a year old is completely reliable! I run an 18 year old Honda that is still completely reliable.

I have seen videos of galloping rust on 1 year old cars, specifically the underbody and exhaust mounts. I’m holding off until that’s addressed.

Former MG Midget and MGB-GT owner here in the US. Still trying to wrap my head around the fact that MG exists in modern times (yay!) but is no longer a brand of interesting and affordable British sports cars anymore - instead it’s now a badging exercise on good-value-for-the-money Chinese vehicles? Wow. Great review on this model. Reminds me of a Mazda CX-5 - of which there is no electric version so far. So good on MG.

it's not a badging exercise. SAIC literally owns MG, and are using the brand to market the SAIC EZS in english speaking countries....which is a good thing, because it's not a first generation product (they have been making electric cars for awhile now).

@@nygelmiller5293 Buyers will buy cars if they are cheap and have features, even if they handle poorly (a lot of people don't care how a car steers or stops, but is that OK for a MG!?). It seems like SAIC & MG have gone away from the approach of sporty handling which the first 75/ZT-based Chinese MG6 still retained, which is a shame. There is no reason a SUV can't also be fun to drive, Mazda shows that -- even if they get some complaints from buyers about a rough ride or overly sensitive steering in the CX5. It doesn't cost any more to make a car fun to drive -- it's just tuning dampers and steering rack bushes and the like! :) Excessive body roll and vague steering is unacceptable even in an SUV -- there are already plenty of brands like Mitsubishi that sell mushy SUVs that are bad to drive, why should MG join them? :) I have no problem with the cars being called MG instead of just Morris, but at least make them handle and steer well like a Ford or Mazda to do justice to a slightly sportier than average badge (just like Ford or Mazda do successfully).

These MG cars are not just badge engineering they are designed and developed at Longbridge with the old Rover design team, but built in China. I would have One. It won’t be long before EV’s are cheaper than internal combustion engines and the range will increase. The world is waiting for the model T of EV’s to come along. Thank you grate video

Great review, we have the ZS 1.0 3-cylinder and has been very impressive in comfort, space and features - would only say the infotainment on ours (2019 model) does not have Android Auto. It has been over 20 years since living in that area, so many roads I still recognise, especially the hairpin at the bottom of Boxley Hill, and the run up to Penenden Heath :-) My dad used to see how fast he could get the family car up Boxley Hill - was an Austin 1800 (Landcrab) and he could get up to just over 50mph as we got to the crest of the hill. So many memories...

People assume the MG's might be rubbish being Chinese, but its simply not the case. I was sceptical too when my other half bought a 2105 MG3 a few years ago, but I ended up really liking the car, and 3.5 years/40k miles later its been very reliable and she loves it. I then ended up working in an MG dealer and I can totally debunk any hearsay. The MG6 was a superb car to drive with great handling, but the problem was we did not have the dealer network, and the MG technicians were not trained on the product enough. Put simply MG themselves did not know how to fix the couple of issues the early cars could suffer with! Things have changed and moved on a lot since then. The MG3 is a BRILLIANT little car. I've driven all the small cars (Fiesta, Corsa, Yaris, 208, Clio, Polo, Mazda 2 etc) and the MG3 I rate very highly. No turbo, but its a proper 4 cylinder engine which is good mid-high rpm and more refined than the 3 cylinder cars, great handling (only the Fiesta can beat it, but they are £18k+), the best steering of the lot, plus loads of space in the back too. The facelift ZS and the HS are very premium with lovely soft leather etc and great value for money. There is nothing sub standard - Bosch electronics. Mechanicals similar to Japanese cars - for example the manual cars have metal clutch slave cylinders mounted external of the gearbox so easy to replace. The parent company SAIC do a lot of work with VW. So they are actually very good cars.

Good, informative video! Thank you. I really really like this car for its price point. I drove it for a week in Australia and loved it; apart from some of the software niggles and satnav mistakes. As a Tesla owner, I think the MG ZS EV is value-for-money and has features that even my Model S does not have such as the blindspot indicators on the wing mirrors, great all-round visibility, heated seats, and rear window wiper. Also, the 7-year full warranty is fantastic! I consider the MG ZS EV to be an ideal second EV for me; and I also recommend it to anyone who is considering an affordable family SUV EV.

Am I alone in being disappointed that electric vehicles still look like cars have done for the last 20 years? They don’t need grilles, they don’t need bonnets, they could look like spaceships, or completely prioritise passenger space. They could even be teardrop shaped for maximum aero.

I´m buying it. Here in Iceland charging is for free or almost for free. Range seems to be perfect for such a small country, and a price comparing with competition is the best in the market. For me personally MG ZS EV is a great choice.

In Australian cities, drivers are getting pushed into SUVs because there are so many of them. If you are in a smaller car you cannot see much. One thing with the MG ZS EV is that the battery does give it a low centre of gravity.

My wife had a new one of this very car in May.However even on economy mode it was falling very short on range even without air con etc on.It went back to the dealers which kept in for a few days and uploaded 5 software updates regarding the battery modules and charge balancing.So far it seems to be doing much better but br warned.

There was a problem with a battery management system update late last year which caused the range to be very small! MG fixed the problem and brought out a new update. I never had the buggy version so didnt get the issue, but many owners had it and once the update has been applied they needed to balance charge the car to get the range back. This won't be a problem with brand new cars, as they don't ship with the bugged version of the software, but if you're buying a used one, you should check that the fix update has been done.

@@aystertube Hiya.Yes it was a brand new car that came with bad balancing software.It is doing better but am keeping a close eye open.I have read the updates came out in January 21 .This car is May 21 but could in theory been built before that.I have read a lot about the whole EV tech now and it seems that once you start to get to 60 mph the battery drain increases rapidly?Unlike a petrol/diesel engine where that would be the most economic general speed for fuel burn.Not convinced at all yet with all EV,s?

@@glennpowell3444 Yep the sweet spot for motorway driving in any EV is 60 to 65 MPH. Its a different mindset to driving a petrol/diesel car once you get your head around it, its fine. I did a big-ish trip over the weekend, the ZS EV performed brilliantly, but I was let down by some of the chargers on route being broken, this is the big problem at the moment, especially for EVs with lower ranges. When Mr. Musk opens up the Tesla chargers to all EVs later in the year the situation should get better. The long range ZS EV is due to be announced next month, that has a rumoured range of around 300 miles so will help a lot.

@@aystertube OK.Yes its the charger points that worry me. There was a Guy Martin programme on TV last night. He found half the chargers he planned not working? My wife had to get a recovery already because the car was burning mileage coupled with a duff charging point on the Zapp Maps app.I love the concept but don't think long journeys with a EV are worth the hastle yet.Mind you if we travel we prefer the train if its convenient. One day it will possibly work and short journeys are fine charging at home.That's cheap. But I wouldn't even attempt to go on a journey that needs a roadside charge.Too much " hope it works " syndrome and its a type 2 only.Luckily my wife only runs local journeys mostly and it will remain that way.Thanks.

I'm 197cm tall and interested in the Kia Soul EV does that sell in the UK? I tried adjusting the front seat for my size and then still found room behind that seat for my centimeters, it surprised me. The square form is very useful for people of size, we like to keep our heads straight up, not at an angle against fellow passengers as most car makers must find making roofs the most expensive part of a vehicle and therefore slanting windows into a postagestamp of a roof. Any chans of a testdrive of one of those, they have a long range version claiming to reach up to 280 miles!

Great review Matt, I can understand your dislike of SUV’s to a point regarding space for example, sometimes less than an estate, but as you know, people buy them for the height, the Nissan Juke is a good example of this, height but no more space than in a Renault Clio. I sure hope the prices come down for EV’s sooner and we get more convenient charging points. It’s a nice looking motor that MG to be fair.

I have 3 teenage children and recently bought a kadjar and I would genuinely like to know of a normal estate car that would give enough room for 3 tall children across the back with decent legroom!?!? MANY years ago I had an 2007 Volvo V70 and we struggled with room for that in the back. - not being arsey I'm genuinely interested.

Skoda Superb, Mercedes E Class, VW Passat, Audi A6? The Volvo was never massive in the back but cars have got bigger and give better passenger room since 2007. My Dad had a Mazda CX-5 and i struggled for space vs his current E Class. I believe the 5 series is actually better than the Merc for legroom these days

Skoda Superb Estate Daniel. Try one, and be pleasantly impressed. Skoda seems to top VW for quality these days..... 2.0Tdi is the one to go for....although there is a decent petrol/electric plug-in hybrid too. DSG auto box is good if you like auto... Owned 4 Skodas here, all good solid cars. Everything is VW sourced, so well proven. Ignore the badge snobs, Skoda make cars as well as anybody today... The Superb is a 500 miles a day car if you need it to be..... and I'll have 50p says you won't find a bigger boot, or more rear legroom anywhere..........

Although I like this, the Range is horrendous. Travelling on holiday in the UK is virtually impossible. I am a fan of EV'S, but the styling is not only impractical, but huge blind spots needs "nanny aids". Nice review, thank you!

Honestly am an estate car freak, however SUVs work for my damaged spine so usually go SUV, currently an Ateca. MG looks good and has a lot less cluttered dashboard than the Ateca, hopefully the digital part is switchable to KPH? An Irish vlogger did 1610 km (1000miles) in a Grande Punto petrol, then did similar in an EV Opel Mokka. Took four hours longer in the EV, stopped at 15 or 16 chargers, in the region of two thirds were out of order! Couple were free charge but at end the charging cost was only a few Euro less than the petrol cost in Punto! That put me right of EV Do like the MG though.

In 10 - 15 years all new cars will be electric and charging points will be everywhere, already 7 in my small market town in Ireland on roadside parking bays and more in car parks. EV bays are free parking as well, no pay and display like the other bays and car parks.

@@tonys1636 Bit of light on the horizon now that the three largest UK charge providers have recently been purchased by three oil companies with promises of big investment replacing and adding to current network, things will be getting cranked up and ready in time for 2030. Hopefully Irish network will be similarly improved on what Stavros found on his 1000 mile test, price and particularly reliability wise. It was Honda e that he did the 1k with, not the Mokka, Mokka test wasn't that reassuring either though.

@@DavidJohnston58 Our public charging network is run by the electricity supply and generating company (ESB) and are ramping up on the installations, along with the closing of the remaining peat burning power stations in favour of wind turbines. The 60's hydro plants may be upgraded as well, although the local small one on our river has been, hopefully only temporally closed, due to remodeling of the weir for flood prevention works, it was a 20's one built by a now long closed mill, taken over by the ESB in the 60's and converted to AC generation from DC to feed into the local supply network as required. May have to stay closed as now new river levels and a massive fish pass for the Salmon, they used to jump the old weir.

I’m considering the HS next year when my lease is up on my CHR. Could you review this next if possible. I’m hoping the HS will be available as a mild hybrid as I cannot afford the full ev version, and only upgrading my car to a bigger suv due to my grandchildren getting bigger and soon to be getting a Labrador. The CHR is a great little suv and lovely to drive and affordable. I did want the RAV4, but it’s 2.5k advance payment is out of my price range. Hence I am looking at the MG HS , plus the MG grill looks amazing.

One place where MG really loses out is that their battery car range are not rated for towing, and they specifically state on their website that towing will invalidate the (very competitive) 7-year warranty. In fact, very few battery cars are rated for towing. I imagine the range drops off a cliff if you're towing, considering how much using the heater kills the range. That being said, the MG battery cars do make an attractive package for someone who is not interested in cars. Cheap to buy (compared to rivals), reasonable range, competitive warranty. They're certainly popular round my way. I'd consider one for my wife who does a 15-mile a day commute, but which is going to drop in coming months as her office is moving closer to home. I'd be more inclined by the MG5 than their SUV options though.

Do you reckon that once fully-charged the electrical power of this car could comfortably manage one trip per week of 110 miles (55 each way) of which 60 (30 each way) are on the motorway and 50 are on A and B roads (without recharging)? The rest of the time would be 20 miles per day to/from work. Thanks!

In summer, yes, winter possibly not. Look at a 58kwh ID3 or similar with a slightly bigger battery if you are wanting assurance for that longer journey year round.

Yes, but that would be about as far as Id want to go without a charge in the middle. I found for a long motorway journey it helped alot to turn off AC, run in Eco mode and keep it at 65

6.5 hrs to fully charge I can fully charge my diesel in less than 3 minutes and get 600+ to a full tank until a Ev can get that sort of range then they are no good for me

That is the charging time overnight, the rapid 80% charge time is 40 minutes, the time that a food and comfort break takes. The time is from the average Motorway Services stop time according to them.

That is for an overnight charge which means you have enough for 150 miles every day for a minimal cost. If you can drive 600 miles without stopping for a couple of half hour breaks (and charge the battery at the same time) medical science might like a word.

I know MR Lloyd is very active with these new MGs he likes them a lot. Personally I have no interest in electric vehicles, they don't delivery any kind of freedom you would get with petrol or diesel.

Rubbish. We've had an ID3 for 6mths now, no difference in 'freedom' from our previous petrol Audi Q3, but a massive saving in running costs.

I'm not having to worry about charging, or whether or not it has enough battery power to make any kind of journey of my choosing. If it works for you then, that's fair enough, for most of us, it's not practical let alone affordable.

My last week's journey would have been nigh on impossible with an EV at present range levels and with rarity of charging points, but they are getting there and my neighbour uses one for her daily commute, which is where they score well. I did about 700 miles over four days and was parked in a field for 24 hours after a wedding....so no charging opportunities there. My diesel Octavia averaged 54 MPG. And how do you tow anything? I have a garden trailer and a 22ft yacht to move around. How does that work ?

I lost my driver's license for six months after being caught speeding in one of these while testing it about one and a half year ago. I was not used to EVs, and it reached almost 100 km/h before I even managed to think about it. That sucked, but I still think it's a great, affordable EV (although I ended up buying an Hyundai Ioniq when I got my license back)

One motoring sector which very rarely gets a mention is Disability. SUV's are popular with disabled people because they're easier to get in and out of...something which is NEVER covered by motoring presenters. Aesthetics is something that rarely crosses my mind...can i get in/out easily, will my powered wheelchair fit in the back, can i get auto? You get the idea? Most youtube test drives start and end with the driver in the driving seat. Excellent, but not too useful...but then, that's just me. Interesting review. Thanks for sharing. Aren't proper Minivans with sliding doors like the Honda Freed, Toyota Sienta, Skoda Roomster or Peugeot Bipper Teepee much more suitable than an SUV? Just as they are for able-bodied buyers seeking space and a high roofline too. The market shuns sliding doors in favour of SUVs even though a van with a sliding door is better (so much so, these compact minivans are often not even offered in many markets due to no business case) -- it makes no sense.

Where i work we hire a lot of these to mobility drivers because they are cheep and fall's into a certain price bracket where the government Will pay for an EV car without a deposit which is good but you pay for not a great deal as a petrol car would be a lot more refined for the same price point. Great review but i noticed you didn't point out the seats are not leather.

I remember when these first launched in the UK and MG did a great deal on them with a free fitted home charger, it was the cheapest EV in the country and loads of youtubers signed up to have one and put deposits down.........then about a month later someone uploaded a video of one outside a MG showroom with loads of rust in all the seams and 99% of these youtubers all backed out Think they've improved now, you see plenty of MGs, the 7 year warranty really helped

Is it just me or have MG taken a load of different manufacturers features and then just made a hash of them? Jag XF gear selector, the dials are very mid-2000s Volkswagen, steering wheel buttons and placement of Cruise stalk is very similar to a circa 2010 VW Passat, round Audi A1/A3 style air vents.

Hi love the videos and I had a look at one of the MG cars the HS in a petrol version and I agree not bad for the 25k new but it did seem cheap inside apart from the leather seats which I doubt whether they where leather and the drive was not great as it seemed slow in a 1.5 ltr petrol cvt auto and visibility wasn’t great at all and no front parking seasons in the top of the range and like you say you can’t see the front end well so I can only see lots of scuffs happening on the front end so for me they have gone to cheap in a important areas like visibility and front parking sensors and a cheap touch screen which looks like a £50 job lot but it’s cheap and a 7 year warranty so no worries so you pays for what you get hey 😂

Actually yes, theres a bigger profit margin. A salesman told my 5'4" wife a Mini Countryman SUV would be ideal for her to take her kayaks on the roof rack . She cant even reach the roof...

180 mile range would not get me to London. The other week, I had a 460 mile round trip to Essex to fulfill - in a day. There is one bus service, Monday to Friday, and no train service at all from home. People ask me why I don't go electric. There's your answer. I can drive anything between 300 and 1000 miles in a week as a senior community carer. But I can understand how some would go for this SUV. Not me, though. I need to be able to get wheelchairs and mobility scooters in the boot, and clients seated easily in the front. Our XC90 is ideal for this - just the right height - so was our V70, for the lugging about, anyway; she is in my step-daughter's hands, now. Depreciation, I expect, will be ginormous, as is with other MG-badged products - and my pay bracket far below affordability for a suitable electric vehicle that ticks all the crucial boxes, presently, and I expect so to, until the day I retire.

If you're in Essex you could use the new Gridserve site at Braintree if you are near enough. Over 30 chargers, cafe, exercise bikes to use while you charge (which feed energy back into the site when you pedal).

I haven’t driven the EV but have driven a couple of brand new ZS’s and I have to say it was appalling in every way. I note you mentioned the steering wheel as being a high point, I personally found the stitching to be really rough and made the wheel unpleasant to hold. The entertainment system I agree was really slow but also the actual quality of the screen was like something you’d get from Alibaba for the cost of a Mr Whippy! My wife has a 13 year old Hyundai Getz with almost 300,000Kms (we live in Oz) and it handles better and is quieter than the ZS. I’d rather buy something decent 2nd hand than a new MG, and I’d be really nervous having an MG EV parked in or plugged in my garage under the house. Sorry guys, I’m out. Enjoyed the review though.

If this thing was badged an Austin I think I would be more receptive but when I see the MG octagon badge it conjures up images of the MGF, MGB, MGA and MIdget. Even the MG Metro, Maestro and Montego turbo trios offered up a sporting drive in the 80s, this MG crossover isn’t remotely sporting.

Don't see the point of fake leather for the seats. It's as bad as the old vinyl back in the 60s/70s. Leather is put in cars for the upmarket feel. If it ain't leather go for an decent fabric, it wont get all hot and sticky when the car's left out in the sun .

Do they sell in volume in the UK ? Not really as the MG3 and 6 have been substandard offerings in the last ten years.Their first SUV effort looked terrible. This model is their best effort so far both in ICE and EV, so they are learning fast. They are building a niche market for themselves and the latest EV estate car looks competent at the very least. I think their market penetration will increase as they are comparatively low cost and " do the job ". Are they really an MG ? No way. Are they a car I have any desire for ? No way. Would I have one if offered at the right price for me.......that's more difficult to answer. We are all going to be shoe horned into EVs in the next 20 years, but not me as I'l be gone by then most probably. Should we be buying Chinese stuff anyway ? Hmmm.......another difficult one.

They are designed and engineered in the UK and made in China by the owners SAIC Motor. There are dozens of just rebadged SAIC Chinese as MG cars in China though .But the UK /Europe ones are British designed . So they are Chinese and should be avoided at all costs lol

Like the grill pattern but tbh it looks kinda bland in the styling department. Also slightly looks like a Mazda from the front a tad bit. I'm surprised by how small the boot is. I've never seen a CUV of this size with such a small cargo area.

Another good review. Like you I do not buy into the suv thing, they are a compromise in most areas. And as for electric cars, when they sort the range issue out they may be worth a look. Even with 160 claimed miles, try that on a dark wet night when your lights, wipers, heating etc are running, more like 100 miles if you are lucky. Think I will stick with my 4ltr coupe for a long while yet :)

You'll be out of luck I'm afraid. Electric cars don't have "gears" as such. There is basically forward, reverse and park. If an EV had gears and a gearbox, you'd simply be wasting time changing gears unnecessarily, because you'd set off in first, then you'd go straight into top gear, and stay there because of the huge torque. A gearbox on an EV would be like fitting a handbrake on a set of skis. Just pointless.

I had an HS a rental car (I'm sure the ZS is more entertaining) and I thought it was terrible. It was a petrol engine and it was fairly frugal, but the handling was lifeless and it had the worst turning circle this side of Proxima Centauri. It felt fairly well put together for a budget car, but the materials are not great (granted it was built to a price). Moulded fake stitching on the dash - honestly, you're better off just giving the cars a moulded dash without fake stitching as it's so blindingly obvious. I too am an SUV/crossover hater and this did nothing to remedy that. Sorry - hate to be a negative Nancy, but I thought it was extremely drab. It's a shame that the MG brand was known for fun little sports cars now they're adorning some of the most dreary cars on the roads.

Sadly, most people don't want a sporty car, especially in the Chinese market which prioritises comfort and gadgets. I assume SAIC also owns the Morris and Austin names (even if they were unable to accquire "Rover"), so I wonder why they have decided to call the cars Morris Garages and not just Morris? :)
