Even though I'm watching this nearly 3 years later, this review is still relevant now. As a Tesla owner, I recently drove the MG ZS EV for a week and was properly impressed. It is feature-packed, and also has features that my Model S does not possess such as the blindspot indicators on the wing mirrors and great all-round visibility. The MG ZS EV is excellent value-for-money and I would not hesitate to own this if my family needs a second EV.

Much better looking and handling than a MGF, more character than an MGA better performance than a full international spec MG Metro 6R4, this must surely be the best MG ever, or a more or less competent Chinese car trying to cash in (fairly successfully it would seem) on an old British brand.

@@philspencelayh5464 Obviously you never owned or drove an MG. THey all had good handling and were the best sports cars you could get for the money. Superb video. Have just driven this car with my wife ( she drove it too) on city roads. Both impressed. Very smooth like the e-golf. Amazing for the price. Minors I noticed. The visibility ( lights , status charging) & accesibility of the charger is not very functional but not a major problem. I hope they improve / update this asap. Second you can not pull the steering wheel frontwards ( up & down you can) but you can move your seat & degree of that seat. I am quite a tall person ( 185 cm). The steering wheel position felt good enough with these adjustments. Drives very smooth in the city. A lot of space inside & the boot was truelly impressive compared to our vw golf M6. Suprising for the size of the car. Plenty of head & knee space too. Wish I had tested it on the highway. The only thing that really bothered me was the real range (140 -165) & that there is no auto update system like Tesla & VW ID3. This could have improved the range slightly over time (software) together with other updates of the software like new roads & closest charging stations,.... Felt & looked modern ( not outdated ). DO NOT MOCK THIS CAR UNTILL YOU HAVE DRIVEN IT. Was worried about MG's quality but the chinese take over seems to have a great effect on this car & maybe the brand. The quality did not feel cheap at all for this price. It is not an audi ofc, different price class. Very happy I drove it.

Quirky review Robert but just a comment on the Charge Port I think you find you struggled firstly to remove the CCS covers because they'd been inserted in the incorrect order after the previous charge and secondly when you replaced them although you inserted the DC cover first you inserted the Type 2 cover upside down! Whoever thought CCS should have those rubber bungs anyway. TBH, I thought the way the grill pops out and up was going to be horrendous, but in practice stand a little back from the front and it isn't; although a little bit of LED lighting illuminating the charge port would be a nice touch rather than the pulsating LEDs in the MG badge during charging an opportunity for another Quirky Comment missed. It looks as if you were driving an early press car as customer cars and the Demo cars in dealers now seem to have more responsive Infotainment system. Pity you didn't explore the "MG Pilot" as it has lots of goodies like MG's version of Pro-Pilot and is brilliantly competent lane following etc

If I do buy one, being as a designer (I design toys and games - I made the MasterChef game and the Huggie Snuggle teddy bear to name a couple), I would immediately make a front bonnet boot compartment for it to store the cables and such. Why keep them in the back? There's plenty of room for me to get something blow moulded to fit and leave the bottles still accessible.

Regarding that 'lip' in the boot - hard to tell for sure, but it looks like that floor (over the charging cables) can be pulled out and put back in on top of the lip (there appear to be supports on the sides at the rear, at the same level) - which would give you a slightly reduced boot space, but flat floor (no lip)

A disappointing amount of information here Robert if you've been driving the car for five days. My wife thought the video was fun, as a build up to Jonnie doing a proper review, but Jonnie never appeared. How was the heating/ventilation, apart from the seats being sticky? How good were the driving lights? How many of the quirks you mentioned up front were the result of you not reading the flipping manual? I agree the charge port cover is rubbish, but no other reviewer has had that much trouble with the rubber charge port bungs. Maybe they're not meant to be hammered in with your fist? Can you charge the car at home when rain is splashing into the exposed lower terminals? Oh, and my wife thought we aught to increase our Patreon contribution :)

Heating is great - although no matter what setting you have it on, it manages to blow right in to your eyes. Aircon makes a very odd whooshing sound every 30 seconds that will either annoy you to death, or you'll put up with it(never get used to it though, its quite distracting). Driving lights are better than average, DRL are fantastic and look great too, very bright DRL. One thing not mentioned, the MG fitted mats in the front tear loose from their fittings after about a week and slide all under the pedals.

Nothing like as professional as your normal stuff...why the stupid 'quirky' background music?...Robert admits he has it for 5 days yet cant be bothered to read the manual and doesnt even know what MG pilot is! He treats the recharging procedure like its the cars fault that he doesnt know how to start the charge process. OK the flap position isnt ideal and may need you to bend down for the 1st few times but I can bet I could do it by feel once used to it and I certainly wouldnt have to sit on floor! Also the use of the 2 bungs isnt unique to the MG ...have seen a few others like that why are they not mentioned in the reviews of those cars? Glitch on kw per mile etc is obviously an easily updateable software error that wont be on the production models....this was a pre prod version All that testing could have been done within about 3 hours tops... ..YOU HAD IT 5 DAYS...what about a report on the motorway etc?...what about testing the different KERS levels and the sport and eco mode differences etc... What do we get instead?...a review of under the bonnet inc the washer bottle and 'mystery (to Robert) bottle'...this applies to ANY car not just the MG .did he have it parked on his drive for 4 days or something while he reveiewed other stuff? I went and test drove an MG ZS EV after watching this review. I liked it so much I ordered one on the spot (Exclusive model). Yes it has quirks, and probably the biggest annoyance is the parping of the horn when it thinks you've left your key in the car, and the bongs. If MG can sort out the parping and the bonging I'm sure a lot of owners would be so grateful. I've got used to the charging port quirk - I don't even think about it anymore. Do I like the car? I bloody love it! Would I have another? Probably a HS EV - I'm told they are due in a year or two.

@@whocares264 I am doing a bit of research on the strength if your comments. In my family from the four of us siblings 3 of us can't charge at home, so its shopping centre charging at a cost of £6-7 for 100mile charge taking half an hour. So by the time you drive to the nearest charger assuming there is no queue that's about an hour and a bit of your time plus about £10 making it nearer 6p/mile fuel cost. Fuel cost is only a small part of the running costs of a car. Generally the more expensive the car the greater the depreciation unless you are using something like a e-type or a McLaren F1. I'm sure it will suit some people but for a lot of people electric cars in their current form just aren't viable. In the future with smaller more efficient batteries which will charge much faster I am sure that will change, after all a lot of the work of an EV is just carrying the battery around

Definitely not up to the standard of other reviews on the Corsa-e or e208. Frankly, I've gained much more useful information from other reviews. The MG is never going to be a TESLA, but it will never be TESLA money either. How many of us would like to own an ev, but are at the lower-end of the market? Personally, I feel that an affordable entry-level EV, deserved a more measured, considered, informative appraisal. Most people will never afford a model 3, etron or eqv. What we do need, is quality reviews of what we might just about be able to afford, with a push.
