This *never* fails to give me goosebumps. Prince is just hanging out on the side in the dark, letting everyone else do their thing, then he comes out and no one else exists. And then he sends the guitar back to heaven, from whence it came. Just watching the reactions of everyone on that stage, I still contend that this was nothing but a jam session between peers, and we were lucky enough to get to watch.

That solo sends shrivers down my spine and it feels so good - a haunting, nighttime feel that at the same time warm. He was always my favorite musician and on this night everyone knew (after some years being away from the mainstream) just how talented a musician he was. This director's cut allows you to see the expressions of everyone during the moment with a lot more focus and clarity. Tom Petty did a great job at figuring out appropriate spaces to let Prince do his thing while also tying it back into the framework of the song; he doesn't get enough credit for this because that could have easily turned into a loose jam session that left the song behind. Yet, Tom would look at his friend (and another great musician himself) Jeff and basically cued, "follow my lead." I also see with more clarity how Tom turned to the band toward the end as to signal 'turnaround on more bar' as he knew Prince was running basic chords as if to communicate: 'ok, I'm good now.' Prince caught him signaling in time to nail a great ending. Everybody on that stage did their thing. From Jeff to Tom to Steve to Marc -- everyone!

He made some horrible comments about Prince’s performance but on that stage at the moment he witnessed a man with more talent in his baby finger than him and his father put together.
