And without a doubt, by miles and miles and miles, the absolute finest unplugged drum performance of all time, hands down. Layne and Jerry get tons of praise for their talents (and rightfully so) but Sean is seriously one of the greatest rock drummers to ever sit behind a kit, him and Jimmy Chamberlain (Smashing Pumpkins) undeniably took their respective bands to the next level with creative in-the-pocket drumming that really glued these timeless songs together and served as the perfect backbone. Not to be negative or pit people against one another, but check out the Stone Temple Pilots unplugged performance ce for an example of a drummer who just doesn't get it... he's the complete opposite, the drum iq between that guy and Sean is lightyears (I dig STP, I just think they would've been so much stronger had their drummer had the same talents as the other 3), It's surreal how much talent was involved in the alchemy of that amazing AiC sound.. songs like Angry Chair and Junkhead completely transport me to another reality every time I hear them.. a true sign of artistic excellence

My husband and his friend did beautiful cover of this song with their guitars. He is military, they typically break them out when they are at the house. They are some top notch guys, him, morgan and the rest of his brothers he serves with. I leave them space. But I keep door cracked. They have some dark humor that makes me laugh. But they all sing together when they play or listen to this song, or any alice in chains song. I listen alot when my husband is gone. He is on 9th deployment now. His fav song is rooster.

No one talks about the incredible camera work here. The way the camera goes in and out of focus when Layne and jerry are singing just shows the emotions and when Layne belts out that first down in a hole the way the camera zooms in on him just adds another haunting vibe to this whole performance. Somewhere out there another cut/edit of the session exist.(Though it will probably never see the light of day ) Two weeks following the show, the band was sent a first cut to review and Layne wasn’t happy. He got producer, Toby Wright to watch the unplugged set from start to finish. Layne thought MTV had edited the whole performance in the worst possible light to make Layne look bad, Coletti would take the notes back from Alice in Chains and re-edit the performance and finally get Layne’s approval.

I felt like I was on borrowed time and scared shitless but when this covid shit hit and I lost two much younger friends, one to liver cancer and one during pregnancy then it put things into perspective. For some reason I felt like I've been on deathwatch waiting for the other hammer to fall and I just grew tired of it. I don't know if there is a God or not but spending time with my 3 yr old makes me feel like there's something to all this spiritual maybe not religious. Peace to you brother. I don’t EVER comment on things, but this particular video is so special to me. When I was a little girl, my mom raised me on 90’s “grunge”. I have so many special memories of Saturday mornings at home, windows open, with Alice In Chains blaring as my parents cleaned the house. Life took an ugly turn not too long after that. When I was young adult, my mom and I became extremely close. She was my absolute best friend in the world. I lost her to cancer in the summer of 2017. Now that I’m around the age she was when she listened to this music, it hits me on such a different level. I became obsessed with Layne and started researching his entire life and career. I can now understand. I feel the same pain and drive that she did through his voice, over 20 years later. It makes me feel like she’s still here... telling me she understands and it’s okay. So grateful for AIC, and this live session.

Jerry should be mentioned too tho, it wasn’t just 1 when it came to their music, this is Jerry’s song and most of their most famous and relatable lyrics are written by him too. @poop face whether or not Layne wrote the song is irrelevant. In 1996, Layne already knew his path was set in stone (no pun intended). You listen to this song, and most AIC songs for that matter, for the same reason the rest of us do. Laynes voice is definitely a part of that, but the lyrics are what hit home, I.e. many can relate in their own way. Esio is 100% correct. For Layne to get up on stage and sing this song at this point in time is the epitome of relatability. You can hear it in his voice, and it isn’t just due to his deterioration and lack of teeth. CANTRELL is a great writer and I do agree that we need to give him credit as he was the other half of AIC. RIP Layne

Obviously that’s not what he wanted. For the record, Layne wrote quite a bit himself, though Jerry is responsible for many of their hits. Pretty much the last half of Dirt is Layne. Tooth loss, especially due to drug addiction, is a gradual process. He still had some teeth in ‘96, but he was clearly on the decline was my point. The irony is apparent and very sad.

Well put, again to remind people, Jerry wrote this song about a girl, yet during this performance it means something so perfect between the two. RIP Layne who was the first person I learned how to sing to, and poor Jerry that he had to go through losing a brother. Soyhr The deal with the stage: They had whole different stage planned. And then Layne showed up with pink hair. Why he was expected to show up with a normal hair is beyond me. He's Layne Staley . The wink jerry gave around 2:18 to the rest of the band was a sort of "I told ya so"; this is because with Layne not recently being able to perform whole shows and messing up songs, they questioned whether he would be able to do this particular show that night, to which jerry answered "yes, he can do it". That smile and everything about this performance shows just how much Layne struggled, but also, how much jerry missed and loved performing with his best friend. Truly masters of the craft and by far one of the best without a doubt.

Yes, Jerry loved so much Layne, we can see it multiple times during this show. During other songs he turned and winked to the other members. I feel at this point Layne joined the Unplugged for the band because they didn't tour because of his addiction and he felt guilty. Even if he sang this song particularly and the other with much passion, I feel his mind was far away.

Maybe he’s smirking because, unfortunately, he knows how true it is not just metaphorically, but literally? Layne has wasted away to a small shell of himself by this point (though his voice was still huge), and tragically he would waste away even more from the drugs until his body could take the abuse no more. Hard to know, but given the subject matter of the song and his condition at the time, it seems plausible to me that the line seemed too real to him in several ways.
