I was a heroin addict for six years. This song hits deep for me. Homeless, a hooker, jail, the whole deal. I know the feeling of just wishing you could just be inside of someone else. I lived it every day for six years. Been clean 15 years now. I get it. Poor Layne.

I was one for 27 years, imagine what that does to a person. Gratefully I am now clean 6 1/2 years. Seeing Layne this way breaks my heart. I know that pain all too well. It's even sadder he couldn't find his way out.

Jerry should be mentioned too tho, it wasn’t just 1 when it came to their music, this is Jerry’s song and most of their most famous and relatable lyrics are written by him too. Both Jerry and Layne helped a lot of people but for some reason Layne always gets all the credit for it even if Jerry was writing the whole song and lyrics. Both of them were some of the best and most relatable lyricists ever. Sad that no amount of people or help was able to save Layne tho, he was past the point of wanting help, tragic story. Definitely a legend tho.

And without a doubt, by miles and miles and miles, the absolute finest unplugged drum performance of all time, hands down. Layne and Jerry get tons of praise for their talents (and rightfully so) but Sean is seriously one of the greatest rock drummers to ever sit behind a kit, him and Jimmy Chamberlain (Smashing Pumpkins) undeniably took their respective bands to the next level with creative in-the-pocket drumming that really glued these timeless songs together and served as the perfect backbone. Not to be negative or pit people against one another, but check out the Stone Temple Pilots unplugged performance ce for an example of a drummer who just doesn't get it... he's the complete opposite, the drum iq between that guy and Sean is lightyears (I dig STP, I just think they would've been so much stronger had their drummer had the same talents as the other 3), It's surreal how much talent was involved in the alchemy of that amazing AiC sound.. songs like Angry Chair and Junkhead completely transport me to another reality every time I hear them.. a true sign of artistic excellence

It's literally the soundtrack of my youth. This album and Nirvana unplugged I would play over and over. And over. It's not one bad song. As a young teenager in the 90's the pain in their voice summaried how I was feeling. I struggled with opiate addiction, and these 2 helped me through. I just wish they were still with us R.I.P. It seems all my favorite bands either overdosed or commit suicide. I miss them so much. It gets better. If no one has told you I give a shit about you. I do. I'm still struggling with my own demons. Growing up, I lived my life knowing I wouldn't live past 30 years. Now he I am 45 still going. Can't say I'm genuinely happy, but it's better then being dead. Stay strong. And everyone. EVERYONE CAN CHANGE. Have a good night, my brothers.

. Somewhere out there another cut/edit of the session exist.(Though it will probably never see the light of day ) Two weeks following the show, the band was sent a first cut to review and Layne wasn’t happy. He got producer, Toby Wright to watch the unplugged set from start to finish. Layne thought MTV had edited the whole performance in the worst possible light to make Layne look bad, Coletti would take the notes back from Alice in Chains and re-edit the performance and finally get Layne’s approval.

I don’t EVER comment on things, but this particular video is so special to me. When I was a little girl, my mom raised me on 90’s “grunge”. I have so many special memories of Saturday mornings at home, windows open, with Alice In Chains blaring as my parents cleaned the house. Life took an ugly turn not too long after that. When I was young adult, my mom and I became extremely close. She was my absolute best friend in the world. I lost her to cancer in the summer of 2017. Now that I’m around the age she was when she listened to this music, it hits me on such a different level. I became obsessed with Layne and started researching his entire life and career. I can now understand. I feel the same pain and drive that she did through his voice, over 20 years later. It makes me feel like she’s still here... telling me she understands and it’s okay. So grateful for AIC, and this live session.

Cantrell has an amazing way with words and music. This song was originally written by Jerry after the end of his 7-year relationship and the helplessness he felt at the time. But when sung by Layne it transcends its original intent to mirror Layne's own struggles with addiction. This song is a masterpiece.
@jakekology1756

I agree, this song transcends directly to Layne's struggle, jerry's head shake after the first chorus proves that. with a huge smile on his face, he knows this song portays pain. And who better to sing this song with conviction, than Mr Layne Staley, who seems choked up with the lyrics. Brings on a totally new feel that this song has nothing to do with Jerry's past relationships, but laynes everyday struggle.

@poop face whether or not Layne wrote the song is irrelevant. In 1996, Layne already knew his path was set in stone (no pun intended). You listen to this song, and most AIC songs for that matter, for the same reason the rest of us do. Laynes voice is definitely a part of that, but the lyrics are what hit home, I.e. many can relate in their own way. Esio is 100% correct. For Layne to get up on stage and sing this song at this point in time is the epitome of relatability. You can hear it in his voice, and it isn’t just due to his deterioration and lack of teeth. CANTRELL is a great writer and I do agree that we need to give him credit as he was the other half of AIC. RIP Layne
@jaredfischer3151
@jaredfischer3151 3 жыл бұрын
@poop face I agree. I remember reading an interview where he said he used to have kids come up to him and tell them how high they were, thinking he would be impressed or something. Obviously that’s not what he wanted. For the record, Layne wrote quite a bit himself, though Jerry is responsible for many of their hits. Pretty much the last half of Dirt is Layne. Tooth loss, especially due to drug addiction, is a gradual process. He still had some teeth in ‘96, but he was clearly on the decline was my point. The irony is apparent and very sad.

Jerry Cantrell harmonizes with Laynes in such a unique way. They complement each other so well, yet together they have such a powerful, somber, and eerie melody. The sheer odds of them both forming a band and being so perfect for each other are astronomical. That's why I feel so blessed to have grown up with AIC.

Good luck my friend. They diagnosed me with mgus. Then 2 docs thought mm. I felt like I was on borrowed time and scared shitless but when this covid shit hit and I lost two much younger friends, one to liver cancer and one during pregnancy then it put things into perspective. For some reason I felt like I've been on deathwatch waiting for the other hammer to fall and I just grew tired of it. I don't know if there is a God or not but spending time with my 3 yr old makes me feel like there's something to all this spiritual maybe not religious. Peace to you brother. Seeing this again after so many years broke me down for all the people I have lost over the past few years. The 90s were a wonderful time in my life that I scarcely appreciated because I thought those days (and my youth) inexhaustible. They weren't and my youth wasn't either. Take a moment to be present, if you are lucky enough to be young and still have all of your friends, because, one day, you won't have either.

2:16 that smile there, i read in an interview that the band actually had a fight weather or not Layne could pull the show off. Jerry was the only one who was certain he could, so when he hit that high note he gives a "told you so" to the rest of the guys. unreal man, the dudes pretty much dead, and the drugs have sucked all the life out of him, and he still managed to project as much emotion into this. music is incredible.

Jerry said in a interview that aic is a 2 pilot aircraft and always has been. I like that very dedicated. No one can ever know what this song is about unless you lived through it. Lane Staley is one of the most unappreciated singers of our time and his songs actually have a message unlike all the other bullshit they call music!!!!!! People need to stop remembering him for how he died or for faults he had and remember him for being the talented and beautiful person he was. I know his music has helped me through some of the darkest most hopeless times of my life. Heroin addiction affects all people from all walks of life and it doesn't make a person a bad person and at least lane was upfront and honest about his addiction. Lane Staley was a gift to the world and he heloped change my life. And if there is a heaven I know he is there. God bless
