A heroin addict knowing he's in too deep and his fate is sealed, sitting here singing the song of his life with three of his strongest believers playing by his side, all 4 clearly connected in the moment. Easily one of the most powerful performances you'll ever see in this lifetime, or any other

I was a heroin addict for six years. This song hits deep for me. Homeless, a hooker, jail, the whole deal. I know the feeling of just wishing you could just be inside of someone else. I lived it every day for six years. Been clean 15 years now. I get it. Poor Layne.

I was one for 27 years, imagine what that does to a person. Gratefully I am now clean 6 1/2 years. Seeing Layne this way breaks my heart. I know that pain all too well. It's even sadder he couldn't find his way out.

Jerry should be mentioned too tho, it wasn’t just 1 when it came to their music, this is Jerry’s song and most of their most famous and relatable lyrics are written by him too. Both Jerry and Layne helped a lot of people but for some reason Layne always gets all the credit for it even if Jerry was writing the whole song and lyrics. Both of them were some of the best and most relatable lyricists ever. Sad that no amount of people or help was able to save Layne tho, he was past the point of wanting help, tragic story. Definitely a legend tho.

No one could ever compare to the legendary Layne Staley. The emotion in his voice is unlike any other. My dad and I listened to Alice In Chains all the time together, it was one of our bonds. It's literally the soundtrack of my youth. This album and Nirvana unplugged I would play over and over. And over. It's not one bad song. As a young teenager in the 90's the pain in their voice summaried how I was feeling. I struggled with opiate addiction, and these 2 helped me through. I just wish they were still with us R.I.P. It seems all my favorite bands either overdosed or commit suicide. I miss them so much. It gets better. If no one has told you I give a shit about you. I do. I'm still struggling with my own demons. Growing up, I lived my life knowing I wouldn't live past 30 years. Now he I am 45 still going. Can't say I'm genuinely happy, but it's better then being dead. Stay strong. And everyone. EVERYONE CAN CHANGE. Have a good night, my brothers.

2:12 if you notice Jerry in the back smiling at the other band mates, it's because he was the only one who said Layne could pull this performance off. All the other bandmates thought he was too sick and deep into his addiction to even perform, but he absolutely killed it. It was the performance of his life, and Jerry had his back to the end. That "told ya so" smirk always makes me happy, what a friend he was to Layne. They all were.

. Somewhere out there another cut/edit of the session exist.(Though it will probably never see the light of day ) Two weeks following the show, the band was sent a first cut to review and Layne wasn’t happy. He got producer, Toby Wright to watch the unplugged set from start to finish. Layne thought MTV had edited the whole performance in the worst possible light to make Layne look bad, Coletti would take the notes back from Alice in Chains and re-edit the performance and finally get Layne’s approval.

I don’t EVER comment on things, but this particular video is so special to me. When I was a little girl, my mom raised me on 90’s “grunge”. I have so many special memories of Saturday mornings at home, windows open, with Alice In Chains blaring as my parents cleaned the house. Life took an ugly turn not too long after that. When I was young adult, my mom and I became extremely close. She was my absolute best friend in the world. I lost her to cancer in the summer of 2017. Now that I’m around the age she was when she listened to this music, it hits me on such a different level. I became obsessed with Layne and started researching his entire life and career. I can now understand. I feel the same pain and drive that she did through his voice, over 20 years later. It makes me feel like she’s still here... telling me she understands and it’s okay. So grateful for AIC, and this live session.

Cantrell has an amazing way with words and music. This song was originally written by Jerry after the end of his 7-year relationship and the helplessness he felt at the time. But when sung by Layne it transcends its original intent to mirror Layne's own struggles with addiction. This song is a masterpiece.

I agree, this song transcends directly to Layne's struggle, jerry's head shake after the first chorus proves that. with a huge smile on his face, he knows this song portays pain. And who better to sing this song with conviction, than Mr Layne Staley, who seems choked up with the lyrics. Brings on a totally new feel that this song has nothing to do with Jerry's past relationships, but laynes everyday struggle.

Layne gave up after Demri died. Even though she had already broke up with him, he paid for her heart surgery. She continued to use, and died. He was heartbroken and I really believe he died when she died.

Jerry Cantrell harmonizes with Laynes in such a unique way. They complement each other so well, yet together they have such a powerful, somber, and eerie melody. The sheer odds of them both forming a band and being so perfect for each other are astronomical. That's why I feel so blessed to have grown up with AIC.

The wink jerry gave around 2:18 to the rest of the band was a sort of "I told ya so"; this is because with Layne not recently being able to perform whole shows and messing up songs, they questioned whether he would be able to do this particular show that night, to which jerry answered "yes, he can do it". That smile and everything about this performance shows just how much Layne struggled, but also, how much jerry missed and loved performing with his best friend. Truly masters of the craft and by far one of the best without a doubt.

Yes, Jerry loved so much Layne, we can see it multiple times during this show. During other songs he turned and winked to the other members. I feel at this point Layne joined the Unplugged for the band because they didn't tour because of his addiction and he felt guilty. Even if he sang this song particularly and the other with much passion, I feel his mind was far away.
