Thanks Richard! Mine broke years ago and have just been ignoring it. Your video is exactly what I was looking for. Plan to fix this summer

Richard for president! Thanks for the video Richard. My kids, as toddlers, broke mine and it’s been bugging me for years. I’m going to get this done this summer.

Thank you! My 2013 broke with the weight of my Saint Bernard. Super upsetting when their commercial for this exact vehicle showed a Saint Bernard in the back.

Hi Richard: I just purchased a 2013 Explorer and my panels were in almost the same condition, I found your video and though lets see if this will do the trick. Upon inspection mine were worse. But your video inspired me to go ahead and try it with a few modifications. First I used fiberglass mat instead the the cloth, while the cloth would work I needed to be able to get into some of the contours more due to where the cracks were. I also have cracks going through the indented circles so each one received it's own fiberglass circle patch. I also used 2 inch angled aluminum down each side (available at most hardware stores) to make sure my backs were square. and a ton of clamps. it work perfectly. I did notice that each panel has a "channel" around the front that could easily accommodate a piece of steel bent to fit and then glassed in to really add some extra stability. Thanks for this video that showed me what I needed to do. I'm also a railfan so I have subscribed. Keep up the great work

Mark, I'm glad that this helped you. Sounds like a gorilla stomped on your panels, but you got them repaired, and that's what counts. If you are ever in the Denver area, come out to the Colorado Railroad Museum in Golden on a Thursday and you can find me in the roundhouse.

Thanks for showing us how to do this fiber glass repair, my 2013 Flex is broken on both sides. I bet 7/10 Explorers/Flex will have this problem. Strangely enough, Ford had similar floors in the Freestyle/Taurus X and owners have never had this problem. Ford seemingly made the part cheaper for our newer vehicles... A common fix for Flex owners is to find used floors from Freestyles at junk yards.

I was not sure how common this problem was when I made the video, but it has a lot of views and numerous comments from people with the same problem. I'm glad that it is helping lots of people make a simple fix.

Like you, I never even imagined that this would break. I've been crawling over mine many times in my '16 Ex. Won't be doing that anymore. Good to know it's easily fixed though. Great vid sir 🫡

I just finished this exact repair on a 2018 explorer. It has the two plastic rails to strengthen the panel, but alas it still snapped. Used the same method, just had to cut the sheets to go between the rails and outside. Made flattening it easier though because I just plaxlced a heavy steel plate on top of the rails to keep it level.

don't have to unbolt the bracket - just pop it out and the panel lifts up.

Nice, but it's not obvious until you take it apart. Based on the number of views, this is a pretty common problem.

Thanks a lot, worked great for me and the kit had enough material to cover both doors failing points, so i fixed the broken one and reinforced the other one that was starting to warp a little bit even while it wasn't fractured yet.

It's an easy repair. Don't try other supplies. The substrate is fiber glass and the kit works very well.

I have the same issue on a 2014 Explorer, thanks for showing how easy it is to flip it over. When I flipped over the board I have 2 plastic braces running front to back that I did not see on your 2013. My crack is right at the end of the baces. Seems the Ford modification did not help. I tried glueing it with Liquid Nails general adhesive but it did not bond so I am off to find something stronger.
@ROKuberski2 жыл бұрын
If you just try to glue the area of the break, it wont' last and liquid nails is certainly not a good choice for this repair. It is the strength given by the fiber glass fabric across area of the break that is holding it together. The panels are fiber glass and the glass patch kit from the auto parts store is a great fix.
@MichaelJohnson-kn9ru2 жыл бұрын
@@ROKuberski Yes, I am going to try the fiberglass patch this weekend. I have the Ford plastic braces to get around as the crack runs right under both, but it should be ok. I have lived with this cracked for 3 years thinking I needed to get a whole new part but now I am eager to get it fixed. Now if I can get my radio from skipping from Sources randomly I would be perfect. My radio will change from FM 1 to FM 2 orFM 3 to XM1 and so on at random times. Kind of think it is a loose connection somewhere since it usually happens on bumps in the road but not always. And recently the back up camera has intermittently stopped working but I found that is caused by corrosion on the connector inside the back hatch (common issue especially up north). Just moved from Chicago to Florida so once I fix this there should be no more corrosion from winter salt.

Update on my 2013 Explorer - Last November a drunk uninsured deadbeat driver with a revoked driver's license hit us and totaled the vehicle. As he approached us he hit power pole guy wires which launched his F250 over the top of us, hitting us in the front and top in several areas. I now have a 2021 red limited model. Lucky to find one in the current market.

Yeah not sure what they were thinking when it was being designed, how i broke mine was something got caught on the 3rd row flap and i didn’t realized when i was pulling it from the back of the truck it just pulled it up and cracked it, i believe it should have had a flap that made like a bridge and over lapped the second row so there wouldn’t be a gap

I almost did the same thing. Seemed very flimsy to me…. I am thinking about reinforcing the sides with some steel strapping and fiberglass so there’s no change of breaking and so it can hold more weight
@ROKuberski3 жыл бұрын
I think it will be fine as I repaired it. I broke it with a large point load in likely the weakest place. I weigh 180 and I think there was easily over half of my weight at the point of failure.
