I’ve had this bike for about a month and have taken it on some rough trails in Arizona. The bike is great for the price and everything is upgradable. I typically ride Trek (domane) but was told by many people that this frame is bulletproof. One of my buddies has a stumpy from 2002 still which highly impressed me. The drivetrain is great, if anything you can put a new GX derailleur on for $125. The simple fact is any drivetrain will shift well until you take it out on rough terrain. If you do not know how to adjust your drivetrain (set your limits, barrel adjust through the gears) then even the best will start to shift clunky. The brakes are also really good, if you have never used disc brakes before then you will learn it is a gradual pull. You really have to pull them in to get total stopping power. If you have any one off questions let me know.

I'm starting to read a lot of negatives and really getting buyers remorse for what I purchased today. It was what I'm understanding is an increased price over last year, and I paid $2650+tax. It is my first dual suspension bike, and I can ride intermediate trails
@mattj66764 жыл бұрын
Once you're spending over $1000, you're going to get a nice bike, they're all going to be nice at the prices you're looking to spend. The Trek you were on earlier costs about $1500 more than this one, so you have to expect the components on it to be a lot nicer. Except for the frames, bikes really are an assemblage of parts made by the same two or three manufacturers, so it's relatively easy to compare the bikes to each other in that regard. You might really like the RockShox forks, or the Shimano shifters, Cannondale's frames, etc. When you hear the bike enthusiasts harping on geometry, this is why. The components are the same on two bikes, but the geometry makes one bike better at some things than the other, or more comfortable. Ride the Cannondale Cujo 2, it's got the identical components to the Trek Roscoe 7. They have different geometry, so they feel different. That's where the real decisions come in from your point of view. Look for bikes with the components you like if you have a preference, then see how the different bikes feel. That's really the best way to shop for these things. I have to think that those brakes weren't set up right, with the dork disk coming loose like that, I'd have asked the shop to look at it; I'm not sure it was assembled right. I'm not sure how much the cold will impact the hydro brakes too. Oil will thicken when cold, maybe that had something to do with it. Brake shoes do need to break in a little for best stopping. Did I hear you say that you're already considering upgrading the next bike you haven't even bought yet in the Spring? My suggestion is to buy the bike you want and hold onto it for a while. Unless you're a winter riding kind of guy, I'd wait until the late winter just before Spring, as that's when the shops will be fully stocked. Matty, I'm going to make one more suggestion to you...you seem to be the kind of person that gets really into interests and hobbies, I think your enjoyment of the sport will be massively increased if you learn more about the mechanics of bikes. They're not that complicated, and you can pretty much assemble and disassemble a bike with a multi tool and some basic hand tools. As you continue to ride tougher and more remote trails, you're going to need to be able to do some field repairs. Besides, you might enjoy building your own hot rod, these parts are all bolt-on!

bikes are scarce this year. if you find one that fits, buy it. don't wait. if you hesitate someone else will grab it and then you will wait until Feb or March for the next chance possibly... btw, the stumpy alloy is a solid and capable bike for the money, and worth upgrading if you find you are into the sport. first place to start is the fork and brakes, but gives you a chance to get in the sport for a good entry level cost

You can possibly change just the pads on the brakes to the Stuntjumper get a bit more bite. Some sintered pads (~$45 for 2 sets) would work well for aggressive riding and are cheaper than replacing the brakes altogether. They take a while to bed In but offer superior bite to the pads sold on the bike. You could also upgrade to larger rotors.

I was all set on getting the cheaper Stumpjumper Alloy like what you got, but test road the Alloy Comp in the sage green, which cost $1k more. After riding that, I did some math and figured if I wanted to upgrade all the stuff that were different on the Alloy model (and I'd probably want to), then it would cost more than the Comp Alloy in the end. Plus, the sage green color grew of me and made me not want a dark looking Specialized frame after all.

@jackattackoutdoors97974 жыл бұрын
Matty, keep in mind you can always switch to some better brake pads or bigger rotors. Saves loads of $$ versus getting new brakes and will likely get you better stopping power for maybe $40 max. I will agree with some others here in the comments though, and say that getting something like a Marin, YT, Polygon or Vitus (consumer direct brands) will get you the best spec for the money by a long shot. Fox suspension, Shimano XT level drivetrain/brakes, better stem & bars, lighter wheels, etc. I know you say you're not big on assembly but they come 80-90% put together, and you really don't need any mechanical skill at all to do the rest.
@stuzzie77423 жыл бұрын

I would go with the Stumpy over the Fuel. And if you can pull together the extra funds I would go with the Alloy Comp model. The upgrade in parts will address all the issues you found with this one. It’s true you can upgrade stuff later but it ends up being more expensive. I think the SX would be fine though and if you don’t like the brakes you could take them off and sell them as new and upgrade those right away.
@MarsOG3104 жыл бұрын
If the brakes are bad on the road, thats a bad sign for future trails, It would be your first upgrade. I like that you pulled wheelies easy. Just factor in a brake upgrade for the cost savings. This inspired me to go check out this bike today. I've been in the market for an upgrade myself but didn't want to spend too much. I currently ride an REI COOP DRT 3.1 and it's been a great intro to full suspension bike but now I'm ready to move on. My thoughts on this Stumpjumper...I didn't like it. It definitely felt like an entry level bike and even cheaper than my current bike. I hated the drive train and it just felt wonky and sounded like it was going to fall apart. After watching your videos, I think you are way too advanced of a rider for this bike. While I was at the bike shop I tried the Santa Cruz Bronson and IMMEDIATELY fell in love. Probably a little more squish than I would ever need but man that bike was legit. A little pricey (you pay for the santa cruz name) but holy hell did I like that bike. If I were you, I'd pass on the Stumpjumper and keep looking at the Trek lineup or something that's not as entry level.

Hey what's going on Matty! I came across your channel and enjoying your videos bro!! I can tell you that if you like the geometry of this Stumpjumper frame, thats the most important aspect. Geometry / fit IMHO is the most important key to make the bike benefit you. IMHO the cockpit components are pretty good. SLX is super reliable and the sunrace cassette is as well (it is 11 speed but the 47T on the steep long climbs in CO will be great and I think sunrace even offers a 11x50T or 49T for the 11spd as well)😀. The Recon fork is a very nice and budget friendly also easily serviceable by DIY. I have no idea what the fusion brand so I cannot comment on it since I have never ridden a bike with fusion fork or shock. You can always upgrade your brakes anytime as that is the weakest link. I'd recommend test riding at least 3-5 bikes within your budget before shelling out💰💰💰's. Looking forward to what you get for the 2020/2021 season. Take care!! 1EB

This is comparable to Fuel EX 5 not EX 7. Just with little better fork on stumpy and EX5 being $100 cheaper. Personally i would get fuel ex 5 and possibly upgrade the fork later. I like deore 12 speed and Shimano brake on EX 5 better. Never rode rockshox 35 but i assume they are not that different from Recon. And only difference between EX5 and EX 7 is better fork and shock. And they are only slightly better. Not $800 better. If you compare it to Ibis Ripmo af or GT Force or any of direct consumer brand, EX7 or stump is not worth it. At extra $300 compared to EX7, Ripmo AF is way better. Definitely stick to EX 5 or Stumpjumper if you want to save money. Otherwise, GT force elite at $2700 is very well speced also. If you are looking at EX7 spend extra $300 and get ripmo af deore. There seems to be tons of IBIS demo centers located in CO also. Trek also usually run couple hundred off during their sale in the spring. EX5 may come under $2000

Specialized Stumpjumper are great bikes👍, but Specialized is kinna premium brand tbh
@malditomalo6194 жыл бұрын
what do you mean PREMIUM? I am interested in SPECIALIZED brand... could you please elaborate more?
@malditomalo6194 жыл бұрын
omg this bicycle looks so fking badass, seriously, just the looks alone has me very VERY interested😁. Wheelie monster machine another winner for me😁. Hey could it be that the person putting the bike together did not do a good job installing the brakes? Another awesome video and this bicycle has me really interested. Hopefully we can get a lot of input from different people on it
@kaosjoker1284 жыл бұрын
@@malditomalo619 I think he means premium as your paying more for the name Specialized than you are the components on the bike. The tekro brakes from what I've heard aren't the best brakes. Sure they will stop you but the feel is what a lot of people don't like. But again those are upgradable if you love everything else about the bike.

@@kaosjoker128 yup true, my 2021 Specialized Rockhopper's specs are kinna entry level and it costed me €700 but I think €600 or €500 bikes would have similar specs, but maybe it's because of the frame, like my bike is the Comp version and it has the same frame as the Pro version that costs €1200, maybe it's the same for the Stumpjumper

Less shop/more shred :D Save yourself some dilema and money, give your hardtail little love (new tyres? Grips? Brakes?) And go out and get some new skills more than new bikes :) There is nearly nothing you can't do on your hardtail that you can do on these...peace!
