As an errand runner and daily driver, the Model 3 is quite the tool and the perfect incognito car. If u want a driver’s model 3, get the rwd which has the lightest weight. I have one as a daily, and my s2000 gets relegated for weekend/track duties. If you can afford it, I think it’s one of the best combos of cars to own, a model 3 and a lightweight sports car.

I’m in a similar boat as you: ‘21 Tesla Model 3 and an E46 M3 - one is my daily that I love, and the other is my weekend car that I also love equally. A lot of my friends are car enthusiasts as well and love both my cars, and I really don’t know any car enthusiasts personally that “hate” Teslas. My E46 M3 is still my favorite car of all time but the Tesla is an amazing utility car that is very enjoyable to me.

I've heard that the standard rwd model 3 doesn't have the same "edge" as the performance. Something about the motor's characteristic or tuning (I think I heard this from Engineering Explained, since he had a standard model 3 for about 3 seconds). What are your thoughts on that? Is the suspension or motor lacking in response?

Effortless electric torque is highly addictive. It isn't even about the power top speed, it's just the immediate response to your right foot, at any speed. Something you immediately notice that is missing when you return to your ICE based car.

I think the early 2000s to early 2010s cars have the perfect balance of digital and analog tech. Like my 2009 Jag SV8 has a touchscreen that controls everything, but it also has physical buttons to control most of the climate control and sound system functions too. The speedo and tach are also analog, while there is a small lcd screen between them that has other functions like the trip computer.

I love my old three pedal cars, but I also like EVs and would love one as a daily soon. I can't see myself picking a Model 3/Y though because of the lack of physical controls for simple things you need to do often (climate, wipers, etc). I'm usually a fan of minimalism, but I think Tesla has gone a bit too far. Wiper stalks and climate knobs didn't need fixing. Good thing tesla just announced they'll start sharing their supercharger network with other automakers.

@Flako I mean they are sorta noisy on the inside, and after seeing videos of model 3s with stripped interiors, and they can be pretty noisy on the inside. Then you couple that with the fact that they use rubber bushings on their motor mounts which makes them even more silent, so if you were to replace those with full metal mounts that would make it even louder. So I don't think we really need fake noises, we just need manufacturers to stop silencing the already pretty quiet motors so much.

The engine attachement you mentioned is exactly why I lean towards buying this car more and more everyday. I still have a 2006 Acura TL that I have maintained so much because I could hear every sound the engine made in idle, and a smooth idle is so important. With this car you just relieve yourself of all these points of failure that can occur, and that's worth the risk of having everything on a screen that can break.

VW's gear shifter on the ID.3 and 4 really confuses me! It's this wacky twisty thing on the side of the driver display behind the wheel. Such a weird design. The reason teslas have such few buttons is to save money during manufacturing. Since Tesla was created their biggest problem has been production cost and speed. It's cheaper and quicker to produce one head unit and fit into all the cars then code the software to have different features per car, then to have to make individual nobs, buttons, and sliders for each car. However this also makes the car look much more futuristic and Tesla plays into that. Another jarring Tesla design/descision is obviously the Cybertruck. The cybertruck is unibody, this is for two reasons. One is to provide room for the battery packs, and two is to cut down on manufacturing costs. Again Tesla plays into it by making the design seem futuristic and cyberpunk-esk

However, I can’t bear the reality that I’m watching the end of the gasoline engine just as I fall in love with cars. However, I really don't think there's going to be a world where I.C.E. vehicles are completely phased out, especially in the enthusiast and performance markets. my thing is the autopilot/ self driving push that scares me, id rather not drive an ev but if I have to that's fine, at least I get to drive. and the argument is that computers are technically smarter then us so its safer but i think if you want to improve safety you make it so people actually have to be good at driving to get a license, the issue is not people in general its the blonde 19 year old in her jeep sipping on her Starbucks and texting while she takes a corner at Mach Jesus and flips the jeep because she's so "quirky". id also much rather see something like Toyotas hydrogen cars be the chosen mainstream over electric, I think there's a place for electric just like there's still a place for diesel but I don't think it should be the only option.

I drove a Tesla Model 3 Long Range when I was looking to purchase a new car. Coming from a Ford Fusion, the acceleration and tech was mind blowing and I loved it. But the instant I drove another car with similar acceleration, all the appeal of the Model 3 disappeared. It handled well enough and was certainly quick, but when I realized how important a nice sound is, the Model 3 wasn’t for me as an only car. But if I had a fun weekend car and the Tesla was a daily, that’s a different story.

@SwiftHDX
@SwiftHDX 3 жыл бұрын
The suspension/lack of comfort is absolutely the weak point of the Model 3 Performance, it's not even hard, it's just extremely bouncy, over every little imperfection. On rough roads and in rain, the interior acts like a resonance chamber as well, so there's definitely improvements to be made to the road noise isolation, and wind noise at higher speeds (85,90+) can also be improved. Below that it's definitely pretty silent, really can't hear anything at 60 considering the road is decent. Selling mine for these reasons, will test again at a later date when they've made some decent improvements. Otherwise a genuinely good car, touch controls are genuinely intuitive and can be learned to be used safely very fast.

Great video! But i don’t think your point on battery technology is completely valid. If a new ground breaking battery came out, production ramp would take a long time to phase out old batteries. And once ramped, a battery swap on your currently Tesla would be fairly easy for a new ground breaking battery.

Battery swap on a tesla will never happen because the new batteries will be the "4680" which will be "structural" to the car itself, it will be holding part of two giant castings in the bottom of the car. It will not be able to be removed.
