*Edit: #21 is the heated steering wheel. After talking with a few Model 3 owners, I believe I got that one wrong. I'm replacing it with a change that I missed: For 2021 the TPS sensors for the Model 3 & Y are now BLE (Bluetooth Low Energy). Previous model years are RF (radio frequency). You can only get them from Tesla and cost $75 ea.

Tesla used to focus on safety and function much more than obtical things, but even optical things are improving extremely fast, visible every year. I've had my trunk adjusted right a week after receiving the 2021 Model. It was done free of charge and looks perfect now. It was done in Winterthur Tesla Service Switzerland. I was given another 2021 Model 3 whilst it was in service and it was done in just an afternoon. I think as well that it has to do with the manufacturing process not being 100% adjusted to the power opening yet. As far as I know Tesla, such things are always done free of charge if booking a service on the app and explaining the problem in detail with photographs on the app. I therefore am 100% sure they will adjust manufacturing very quickly.

@tomasvidziunas5543 4 жыл бұрын
@@rahulp2288 maybe in ICE car ir would be used for that. In this case there is no noticeable difference, most of the noise comes from wheel arches. Look up Tesla Bjorn he did compare 2019 and 2021 Model 3. It is for heat isolation. I also changed my 2019 TM3 to 2021. No difference at all. Though I used mobile app to compare them.

@@tomasvidziunas5543 what Bjorn forgets is the front windows have a constant stream of hot air blowing on them to demist them. They have no frost (compared with the rears) because of that. Measuring the trunk opening from the ground doesn't provide an accurate measurement difference. You'd have to measure from the bottom of the trunk opening to the top. Using the ground takes into account the vehicle stance which may be different on a model 3 with 19" low-profile tires and, potentially, older suspension that's sitting lower.

4 of those fixes that definately get a hand-clap from me: Chrome deleted, power trunk, satin finish console, heated steering wheel (tba). Yes, the efficiency bumps is awesome too. Now if only the headliner could be dark. So far I will stick with my plans to get a less efficient Mach-E GT. If the YP gets gets a display in front of the steering wheel and dark headliner before then, I may consider it.

Best comprehensive overview of all the changes I've seen. Thankfully I don't have FOMO after watching your video. I have a 4/19 build LR RWD, among the last built before it went off menu. Hopefully my car can become a Robotaxi in a few years. I'm looking forward to a Y or 3 out of Austin with single castings and 4680's. I spent a lot of time working out the kinks on my 3 so I hate to think of going through it all again. I was disappointed to hear the noise was not any better. I've taken all my door panels off and adjusted the windows to where the wind noise is pretty well minimized. I've noticed road noise is dependent on the road surface and the 3 is highly susceptible to cross winds for increased wind noise. Heated steering wheel is nice in our other cars, but don't miss it as much as I thought I would in the Tesla.

Tom, if you can get 323 miles of range out of the 353 EPA numbers going avg. 70 mph.. that would truly restore my confidence in Tesla EPA numbers .. with my previous model X and current model 3 I just don’t get close to the amazing EPA numbers that I truly want to experience .. I certainly didn’t have that problem on any of my previously non-Tesla cars. In general, I love the car though, but there are still some of these cosmetic fit and finish issues they need to address. Another recent change. The car stores panic videos on onboard memory, so it remains unclear if stealing the USB drive would even hide the intrusion.

Good post, Tom. Tesla doesn't seem to be in trouble in the stock market. However, the competition is coming - hard and fast. The Mustang is certainly a major contender. And better in many ways - superior build quality goes without saying. In the end, it is Elon who forced an entire industry into electricity, which is an amazing accomplishment.

#22 Worth noting: The heat pump in Model 3 is implemented a little bit differently than in the competition. It does not leech heat from the environment directly, but from the battery (through the coolant). That means you’re cooling your battery by heating up your cabin. Under normal driving conditions, that is fine, as the battery will almost always be warmer than the environment, but when the car is still cold, you’re cooling your battery even further, reducing performance until it warms up. Since the battery is warmed up by heating up the motor stators (resistive heating), that means that when it’s very cold, or the car wasn’t preheated, you’re essentially heating the cabin with resistive heating.

my opinion is that the double pane glass window is to improve heat retention in winter so to improve efficiencies along with the heat pump. I dont think its really for noise.
@rtfazeberdee3519
@rtfazeberdee3519 4 жыл бұрын
Its known as acoustic glass, for thermal properties you need a sealed air gap between the panes of glass filled with an inert gas.
@InternetDude
@InternetDude 4 жыл бұрын
That is your opinion. But the facts are the double pane window is there for acoustic reasons, not to improve heat retention. If they actually cared about heat retention (they don't) they would not use such a large amount of glass on the roof.

Hi Tom really nicely done, but I wonder are these LG cells or Panasonic, Bjron Nylan noticed the Model 3 AWD in Europe was using LG cells while only the Performance had the Pana cells. Noticeably different in state of charge handling especially at lower charge levels (LG seemed to handle cold weather, Panasonic seems to baby the cells but maybe the BMS will be updated when Tesla become more confident in the new Panasonic cells). Look forward to some cold weather range reviews!

@@shaank1875 Hmm. Well, I paid $6k for FSD. It's $4k more now. Then there's depreciation. I'd get another 30 miles of EPA range, better USB ports, a more traditional center console, power trunk lift (which may also result in strangely larger panel gaps above the trunk), and like 1/5th of a second of 0-60. I don't think that all adds up to me upgrading. Oooh, but that pedestrian noisemaker! Now it's tempting.

I don't think the model 3 will have heated steering wheel. yes, it has it built in, but thats because the model Y has a heated steering wheel, and its the same wheel as on the model 3. so instead of tesla making two SKU's of the steering wheel, they make one. but software limit one car model.

The noise problem is because of the frameless windows, they are just glass pressed against rubber, different from most cars where the frame contains 2 or even 3 layers of rubber contacting the car structure. When driving, air bleeds through these contact of glass and rubber and creates noise, so the problem is in this part, not in the glass, then the double pane glass won't make much of a difference.

Heat pumps are indeed much more efficient than resistive heating down to about -5 C. In truly cold environments, however, like much of Canada in winter when ambient temperatures are -20 C or colder, heat pumps on their own struggle to provide adequate warmth and their relative advantage in efficiency diminishes substantially. Bjorn Nyland might make this a subject of one of his informative videos.
@ohger1
@ohger1 2 жыл бұрын
I'm not sure, but I thought I read that Tesla is scavenging heat from the motors to assist the heat pump. Straight air-air heat pumps really suffer as temperatures drop, so it would be interesting to see how many BTUs they can get out of the drive system.
