We've had many people ask us how our 2021 Tesla Model Y Standard Range does in the snow being rear-wheel drive. Last week, we got a fresh dumping of snow, and Alissa and Charlie took the opportunity to test the Model Y. It's pretty darn good in the slippery stuff!

Here in Canada, we get snow regularly in the winter and the MY LR is $70k CDN vs $56K for the MY SR. So it’s not always possible to purchase the LR because of the price.

I miss living in Snow sometimes... however I also love my Florida weather! I grew up in Ohio and drove a big F250 Diesel truck and loved every minute of driving in snow! Thanks for sharing!

I understand Tesla's are better than other cars in Winter because of low center of gravity and weight distribution but Winter tires are a must in snowy climate regardless of what you drive truck or anything else. The difference winter tires make is huge. winter tires are worth every penny especially knowing the safety difference the provide. I have a BMW rear wheel drive and with all season tires it's Not drivable in winter but with winter tires it's a tank in the snow the difference is huge. It really transforms the car to something else, it's much safer. I bet this Tesla Model Y would be really good with winter tires on. I haven't seen a standard Range model y with snow tires test I wish somebody did it

Just want to correct everybody that the all-season Continental ProContact RX shipped with model y (not performance) is considered a winter tire, but not SNOW tire. It is with the M+S symbol which is considered winter tires.

I have the exact same one. In snow two days ago and almost spun out on a tight curve. Looked away for one second. It recovered as best as possible and slid kinda straight. Getting winter tire next year for sure!!

Winter tires are a must! Don't cheap out on them, just going to a ditch once or god forbid get into an accident you will be beating yourself up. Trust me the safety difference it provides is huge and worth every penny and I know this from a lot of experience in the snow in many different cars. I can't believe he's actually driving with all season tires in the snow. No matter what car you drive winter tires are a huge difference and in case of Tesla is even better because of the weight balance and low center of gravity. Plus when you're driving with your winter tires you're not consuming you're all season tires so you have nothing to lose except gain a lot of safety and stability

@@j0404t First winter i managed with my stock all weather tires but for the 2nd winter when my tires have logged 40k kms already, the car was not useable anymore even during light snow. I bought winter tires and still got stuck during a significant dump of snow. I had to help another neighbour who drives a SR M3 who also got stuck. I have other another ICE vehicle and will definitely use it during snow fall. Now I do believe that RWD are not suitable to drive in the snow

Install winter tires winter time, trust me this will be the best the decision you ever make for the safety of yourself driving. I know from experience brother, they're worth every penny even if it snows few times it's a must, because just one accident or getting stuck in a ditch would ruin it for you

In your car there's only one engine driving the 2 rear wheels. The engine cannot give more or less power to one of the wheels, but the car can apply more breaking power to one of the wheels to stabilize the car.

I got a M3 SR+ in New England. With winter tires on it, its just as good if not better than the wife's Subaru. Just get snow tires and RWD is perfectly fine

I consider the Tesla Y RWD version only because of climate change and my daughters are already out of school. I remember several events to have big difficulties to leave the underground garage at snow. There is a curve to exit. But now no daughters to bring 7:00 am to school, much less snow in winter here in Austria near Salzburg. BTW, I use since 2009 only winter tires all the year.

People on the forums complain about lift off oversteer/instability in the RWD Teslas due to regen that cannot be be disabled. Do you find that to be the case on snow in corners?

My 370Z sucked at snow/ice. I've had it get stuck, lose traction from a. standstill even with trying, and spinning out at 10mph.

Would be nice nicer if it had higher ground clearance. However yes Tesla has great traction control systems.. One of the best vehicles I've driven in snow. I still drive my QX60 awd in winter

@@DailyMotor yea the plows came by and put about a foot and a half of snow in my driveway. There is no way my tesla would have gotten through there let alone without damaging the front bumper.. I just drove through it in my Infiniti. Can't wait for Rivian!!

Just remember people the absolute cheapest winter tires are 10 times better than the best all season tires in winter, if you live in a cold climate/snow installing winter tires will be the best decision you ever make for your safety ! I know this from experience!

I am in doubt between Y standard and long range, just because of the ability of standard in mountain roads with up/downhill, would you tell me how is the situation of the standard model in that situation?

Standard would be totally fine. Ours still did 0-60 in less than 6 seconds, it is very powerful

Hi Alberto! Worst case scenario, cold weather and highway, we've gotten 150 miles of range. With mixed driving and temps above 50 F, 240 miles is very doable. I kinda assume 200 miles as my safe range.
