Best local review channel in my view, bar none. Nothing wrong with Toyotas. Durable and relatively capable. Bit hit and miss at times with styling but they tend to grow on you. Interiors are often a generation or two behind - but unless you're changing your vehicle every 12 months we're all living with older interiors eventually. I'm not sure the "my brand is ace yours is crap" game benefits anyone. I've only ever owned one Toyota, but know enough people to accept they're perfectly fine. Hilux, Ranger, Amarok - whatever. Buy the one you like and let everyone enjoy their choice. Reliability? Lot more to do with with maintenance and how hard you are on your car to be honest. All manufacturers have issues at times. Local dealers, that's another story. But then again, missing services and thrashing it when its cold are big risk factors. One area of concern for Toyota is cost. Some of their vehicles are relatively expensive. Re-sale is one thing, but spending an extra $20K to recoup an extra $5k is odd logic. The point is you're not always getting as much for your money. I understand reliability. But spending thousands less on an alternative leaves a lot in the kitty to pay for repairs, or upgrades. And, as an 'older' timer - almost all new cars are reliable when compared to a few decades back. Each to their own. I could live with almost any of the dual cab utes. Even the LDV. Local bloke has one and with a tray it looks good. He's happy too. And that's the thing. Tests are an interesting comparison but you never really get to know a vehicle until you live with it.

I agree! Each to their own. About the "my brand is better than yours" thing, most ute/car owners i meet in real life are nowhere near as aggressive as the people in the internet, regardless of brand. As long as we have our preferred choice and what makes us feel good.

Agree with most of what you say but the premium in initial purchase does come back, I paid 56k d/a auto with leather, tow bar, liner & sold for 53k 18 months later, only had 20,000 on it though.
@chappo4845
@chappo4845 3 жыл бұрын
Agree Craig, if you're looking at a $56K truck from another manufacturer. Setting aside perceived quality and enjoyment, anyone paying $30 - 40K over the same period for an alternate would have to lose substantially more to wipe out the difference in lease/loan payments. Not everyone finances, but most do. I love a good base model and tend to keep my vehicles for a long time. What I lose in re-sale is usually well covered by the saving in purchase price and spread over a number of years. But as I said, nothing wrong with a Hilux.

Leather is a option tub liner option Tow bar option roller shutter or hard lid option No blind spot monitoring at all ??? I have always had a Hilux however To have all the above options i wanted in a Ute I was quoted 72k ,,,12k more than the Isuzu X terrain with a tow bar under 60k With all the options listed above And more . I haven't been in EVERY modern dual cab ute in Australia but I've been in an few and I like the Hilux the most. Funny thing is I think the SR model is a better buy .. THE SR5 tyre and rim package is not as "offroad" friendly. The Ford ranger has more towing power but the seats and driving position don't feel right to me, and after a long drive I find myself busting to get out of it. The hilux is more comfortable to spend a lot of time in.

Yep. 99,99% of reviews are how to own a new car for a day or two - when it's brand new :D that is probably nowadays problem with mass consumption etc. That gives an illusion that every car today is really good and makes things like screens etc more important than actual driving, durability etc. Sadly, we are all affected by time :)

Great honest review. Really presented its new features in a good light, however like others including me, Toyota isn’t the ‘go to’ choice as it once was. With the 10 sp ranger, new Dmax, Triton and GWM Canon for budget end, these are just four competitors within a very competitive field. Its all personal choice, but for me, its the Dmax and if on a budget, the GWM Canon. Sorry Toyota,

Toyota rests on its laurels on the good reputation as a reliable and trusted brand. Unfortunately it translates into an attitude of ‘we don’t need to build premium items into our vehicles’ which means hard plastics and no rear or cross traffic alerts in this cab chassis. This is also why the Troop carrier still rusts in the chassis rails and roof gutters etc. which is shameful when they expect you to pay over $70k for a design that’s over 30 years old. Come on Toyota you need to build a new gen Troopy. John

I think toyota tries to hit the side of the market that care a little more about build quality and reliability hense keeping the hydraulic steering rack and not adding too many soft plastics and sensors. I guess even though your technically getting less features your paying for the test of time a little more then the others. (Although i do think that dmax motor is going to be a very valid competitor in reliability against the hilux)

In eco mode, though, if you plant your foot it will go into power mode. I have been told (it was stressed) that when towing ALWAYS use power mode. Power mode is still economical when up to speed or accelerating gently. Edit: I have friends with other brands of 4wd’s - I’ve had 3 Hilux and have just ordered my 4th. I think with the price increase and Toyota playing catch up all the time they have missed the bus. They are awfully slow with modernization. Just got Apple Car Play and Android Auto (I think should be mandatory get's people off their phones whilst driving.!). The DPF issue was not addressed well and took a class action against them to admit fault. There is no doubt the new Isuzu Dmax is a better buy than the Hilux and the Ranger outsells the Lux in the high end category. If I wanted a work horse that is reliable and well equipped and modern the Isuzu Dmax is it. If I wanted a high end ute the Ranger is the market leader. I will be surprised if Toyota continue to dominate this category if you take away their fleet sales. (Low end workhorse models).

Hilux is a agricultural vehicle, they are built to last, and they are built for tough conditions. So that’s why they’ve kept the cab chassis version from factory in the sr5, so those mine sites and tradies can throw the steel tray on there.

As said pricey for what you get. I would !Ike to see Hilux, D Max, Navra, Triton ect with a longer wheelbase especially in the Duell and space cabs. The trays on some are so short battling to get 2 pallets on. There is room for lots of improvements in my personal opinion.

Hi Lux amazes me how it is often the Number 1 but always offers a Number 2 (or less) vehicle? I guess a lot has to do with resale volumes due to Government and mining vehicles always pouring into the market. The new BT50/Isuzu should outsell Toyota easily given their price, refinement, finish and off road capabilities. I have been hearing for 30 years that the Hi Lux has missed the mark but they must be doing something right. The long term quality must be taken into account as they do generally stay running for decades. BT50/Isuzu for me though, or will it be the new Navarra?

Won’t be best selling for long. Price used to be reasonable but now it is a joke for what you get. Firstly, check out the prices over the ditch in NZ. Over 10k cheaper for what they call SR5 cruiser. In fact it also gets upgraded JBL sound system, wheel flares and leather for about $58k. We pay just shy of 70k for same spec without wheel flares and JBL system. Even considering luxury car tax it still makes no sense. New Dmax and Ranger FX4 due in December is way better value. Shame as I know a lot of people who were waiting for this new model and then went elsewhere when they saw the price. Guess Ranger will take out first place in 2021 and beyond

When you live in the bush, like I do, it is important to have a good Dealer network to take care of warranty and servicing/parts. Thats why I buy Toyota. Anything mechanical has the potential to fail so you need that back up just in case. There are a lot of dual cabs on the market and some with very low sales figures. Poor sales cannot be sustained and I can see a few more Manufactures pulling out of this market.
@CarExpertAus
@CarExpertAus 3 жыл бұрын
Makes sense, Bob. I think that's one of the main reasons people buy so many HiLuxes. You can travel virtually anywhere in Australia and be near a Toyota dealer.
@unknownd7409

Unfortunately because of this, Toyota doesn't try to compete against the class leaders since they enjoy already a healthy amount of sales. If they made a class leading ute (which I believe they can, since they are the biggest car manufacturer in the world) coupled with their excellent dealer network, it would be a true game changer.

Parking sensors + reverse camera pretty hard to install to a cab chassis variant lol. power mode, echo mode and the 3rd mode of 2 .. lol.. is normal mode which it runs when the other two are turned off which sits between the two. i do like your channel and i do watch lots of your vids.. but i think falling prey to how the ranger drivers view things abit lol. A 4x4 ute test... should it not be how good it tows heavy weights, its offroad capabilities and handling under load. getting in caped in mud and how practical the set up is.. and the reliability all round of the vehicle. but nope..winner = prittiest one that has the most luxurious inside... wins the workmans 4x4 ute review lol. i'm toyota for life.. but recently had the worst customer service ever, i have sunk 6figures into my 2016 N80 and the mrs just purchased the 2021 fortuner.. my plan was to get the new lux, but after being treated like absolute shit and even had a manager at toyota turn and started helping another customer as we were half way through a sentance and this was 2mins after the Mrs just put down $70k+ and had the normal sort of questions etc. long story short, decided bugger it and i'd go with their competitors.. i went so far down the list trying to find another ute that felt like it wouldnt fall apart after the first trip that i ended up almost buying an LDV hahaha!! after all of that, i'm back at looking at Hilux's again. if only the Toyota sales team could take a leaf out of the engineers book. Toyota have their flaws and the 2biggest gripes i had in the 2016 SR5.. it didnt have heated mirrors as standard.. for the price and function of the ute.. 100% should have been on ALL models as standard. touch screen interface- no volume button to to turn down. have to tap tap tap the screen because in real life tap and hold doesnt really work. but these have been addressed in the new version. so my new plan was to upgrade my 2016 auto dual cab ... well not upgrade but change for 2021 manual extra cab. but.. there is no SR5 extra cab. (i already new this from last time) but NOW.. manual doesnt have the new torque figures and the extra cab now doesnt come with welside as an option... the SR should at least come with keyless entry/start. i bloody give up haha!!

Thanks for the feedback - it’s actually pretty easy to fit a camera. It’s available as an option too, Toyota has just cut cost out of the car by not making it standard. It’s pretty dangerous without a camera or sensors. As for the other tests - agree that’d be great. There are specialist channels out there that do just this (4x4 24/7) is a good example. Given most people won’t go off-road or tow, we just cover the basics. We may look to expand this testing in the future if there’s demand for it. I like the HiLux, it just feels super dated now compared to the competition.

This update engine in the Toyota looks good on paper but... I still prefer the 5 cyl 3.2 engine in the Ranger than the 2l. Just sounds so good and the torque just feels so much better than the 2l 4 pot despite producing less on paper. Not sure why that is? Saying this because because even the 4 pot on the luxie still seems boring. Hope the rumor's of the v6 Diesels for both the luxie and ranger is true.

I have a 2016 Hilux SR5. It still drives like a brand new car. Not a single rattle or squeak. I think it's a bit funny when people say other models in this sector have improved more than the Hilux. This may well be true but only because they have been playing catch up for 20 years! I think Toyota are well aware of what their buyers want. I don't use mine for work but I'm more than happy with the interior. If I were a tradie, I would be pretty scared of damaging all those lovely soft surfaces in the other models. I also think the cab chassis variant is genius in the SR5. I can say this because my son has been wanting a new Hilux, didn't want a style side, but loves the SR5 interior. Toyota have delivered again! Not to put too fine a point on it, but the Hilux is still the most reliable in it's class with the best comparative resale value. At the end of the day, those 2 things are way more important than having a soft vinyl dash. Love your reviews, Paul Keep up the great work!

I hope another car brand release new ute soon the can push Toyota offer better price , I won't pay that high price now , back to 2018 SR5 Auto for $52,990 driveway at Sci fleet, really miss that offer.

Hello am looking for a certain type of hilux. Please advice. Most of the models I see here in Kenya are not that spacious. The second cabin in a double cabin is not that spacious but there is a certain hilux which was wider, the cabins had more space/spacious. That was the key but it also seemed bigger. Which is this hilux model and which countries produce this? I want to get my hands on such. Please advice.
